Raised my Brit and spent 12 happy years with her. Everyday early morning field run , late afternoon field run. Took her everywhere all the time. You don’t need to be a hunter to have a happy Brit but you must be ultra active to do this breed right. If your a 1-2 times a week dog walker find another breed. A happy Brittney wants to run preferably all day! I’ll never forget her as we lived the life.

Rule #1, never yell at your Brittany. They are super sensitive sweet dogs. Definitely love their routine.

I’m 54 and have had some great dogs throughout my life. Most of them were shelter dogs, but as a runner I researched this breed and got my first Brit Rigby three and a half years ago. This breed is all go or all stop…. Not much in between. The all stop in Rigby (500 pound rag doll snuggles) inspired my wife to get Dilly. Dilly is one of those does-lines-of-cocaine-all-day Brits. Six months ago we had an accidental litter (never my intention to neuter and post first heat spay is better for physical development) of nine and now have a household of five Brits which is mostly amazing. I absolutely wouldn’t recommend this for the majority of people. You must cater to their needs or your house will be destroyed. For me, I wanted a go dog(s) and got exactly that. Couldn’t be happier! As for the accident, in my lifetime of experience with dogs the act took more than a couple of minutes. Rigby and Dilly were under near constant surveillance. Apparently my boy is quick. Dilly had post birth complications that resulted in us having to care for the pups from two and a half weeks on. Yep, we bottle fed nine pups four times per day. We aren’t breeders so we probably lost around $5k in this experience but gained three incredible dogs. It’s crazy and beautiful to see the traits of their parents manifest in their very unique personalities. ❤

Hi. Long time Britt master and Britt lover and upland hunter... Thank you for your video. Britts are also very eager to please (related to your #5). They are indeed attuned to you more than most breeds. Your liver and white Britt is a doll, (Piper if I am not mistaken?) watching her body language during the video was incredible to me. She would be a joy to train, based on how much attention she was giving you. One technique I have used to help solidify trust and build "eye" communication is to also use a hand signal with each command. What hand signal you use is not important, as long as it's consistent. I used to be able to recall my Britts from 200 yards -with no whistle - simply by just raising my hand high (like a student does in class). It teaches your loved ones to look at you more as well as listen, and helps in old age too when they lose some hearing.... Yea, activity is key, to help control prey drive I also biked my Britts EVERY day. (Our two Britts passed away from old age last year and we are still getting over it.) I wish you and your adorable Brits well. Remember, as masters/leaders, we always get the dog we deserve. Love them and lead them with a gentle heart. Best of luck and thanks again.

@Aleckzandr

@@jark6862 You're most welcome. I post because I love the breed so much. Your hand signals can be animated but make sure they are also discernible and easily distinguishable. You can use two hands as well. For example, I use to make a motion with two hands similar to a baseball umpire would make for a "safe" call. This meant lie down and wait, and I could go into any type of store (or where dogs are unwelcome) while they patiently waited, sometimes up to 20 minutes. Continue to use voice with the hand signal, but then at some point you will be able to drop the voice command. (I think you also use facial expressions but never tried it, but they could tell a smile from a frown, that is for sure!) They will have learned that voice or hand signal is a symbol for an action to take and to what to expect. ("Your action means I take this action.") Again, building trust and communication both ways. Best of luck.

this is all true. very sensitive dogs and if you're angry or upset you have let them know it's not them. And if they hurl while your gone, as they miss having you there, you have to assure them that you're bigger than their accident. You can make it go away and make all things better. One of the best exercise tools I have is the bike tow leash. (too bad they've gotten so expensive). Bikes are a great way to run out their energy but you need the right leash, one that will not let the dog control the bike. Just don't go too fast or when it's too hot. The bike tow leash is the best I've seen on the market.

Your babies are beautiful. We had Britts growing up, my dad hunted them. As an adult, I have had 4 britts, 2 at a time. 3 orange, 1 liver. They like to run so a fenced yard is good. They can be very sensitive, my Dottie was. They all were crate trained and house trained easily. Two loved sleeping in the bed with us and two loved to sleep on their dog bed on dad's side. We had a lake house and pontoon boat. All four loved fishin'. They are high energy but the sweetest doggos.

Hi! Chiming in to testify that of the 6 Britts I've had: #1. Not one of them would walk on leash w/o pulling, even the obedience/hunting trained one! #2. All of our Britts were amazingly easy to housebreak, though I did have two who on occasion would "naughty poop" if they were mad at us. #3. They have all been what we call "Chow Hounds"--they LOVE to eat and yeah, have sensitive stomachs as a result of their over-doing it/gluttony! #4. The BRITTANY NOSE! It gets them ALL in more trouble throughout their lives. #5. OMG--I'll never forget after getting our first Brittany (who looked like Rooney) and walking him one day we met up with an elderly man who was so happy to see my dog before explaining that he had raised Brittanies for years and added something that was so true I never forgot it: "They sure are TENDER-Hearted dogs, you'll see." I did learn that and that, too is what makes them such loving companions.

We're on our fourth and the pulling is 100% prey driven. When she was little it started out directed at leaves. Then she discovered song birds that would be in front of us. Squirrels and chipmunks have taken the top spot right now and she will even pull to the sound of a chipmunk. There are no straight lines since the current target could be anywhere and at almost a year most of it is directed by her nose.

They shouldn't have a Brittany if they're walking them on leashes. These dogs need to run freely. Imagine the frustration for them walking along at the speed of a human. If you're gonna say there's nowhere safe in their area to walk them off leash then don't get one.

Brittanys are crazy. I just listened to you talk about sensitive stomachs. The first week I had Jake (rescue, 2 years old), he ate 2 pounds of grapes. The vet gave him 5 rounds of hydrogen peroxide to make him purge.....and...nothing. The vet had never seen anything like it! The next round was charcoal. :)

BRITTS ARE EXTREMELY ACTIVE, AND THEY WILL CHASE ANYTHING AND EVERY THING. YOU CAN KEEP THEM FROM PULLING YOU WITH PROPER TRAINING, IF THEY PULL, STOP, MAKE THEM SIT FOR A SECOND, ALSO YOU NEED TO BE PATIENT. FEED THEM ONLY TWICE A DAY WITH A DIGESTIVE SENSITIVE STOMACH. Pulling is frustrating for sure. Following behind a puller rewards the behavior, causing it to worsen. For folks who are serious about fixing pulling, check out KZfaq video “Teaching Shelter Dog to Walk Without Pullling - 8 tips for successful leash walking.” It’s not a quick fix but a way of life until your dog learns that mindless pulling gets him nowhere fast, while staying attentive and mentally connected to you leads to all kinds of good things. Plenty of resources are out there for building a positive and respectful relationship with your dogs. I recommend DogsThat because it’s comprehensive-it’s not just about tricks or obedience training, like so many training programs, but IS about relationship building. And it’s done through interactive games using positive reinforcement that will teach your dog to 1. pay attention to you and 2. learn impulse control. Your dog will really “wow” you with a little effort of the right kind. Good luck!
