Although it provides a window into life with a car, there's only so much we can learn during a regular week-long review. Niggles pop up, panels come loose and rattles start to form over time - and if you're anything like us, they'll start to drive you insane.
Rather than taking a stab in the dark, or relying on scuttlebutt from punters to learn what it's like living with some of Australia's most interesting, popular or talked about cars, we went out and laid down our hard-earned on a fleet of diverse 'owned cars', ranging from an Abarth 595 to a Mitsubishi Triton.
Here's a little look into life with our loveable Italian stallion, the Abarth 595. As you might expect, it's a quirky beast - lucky it's fun to drive, right?

In Europe we had a facelift a couple of years ago, which included updated infotainment. I brought mine nearly a year ago and have covered 10,000 (mixed) miles and i'm still convinced that it's the most fun, interesting car for the money (around 15k- discounts are decent). You don't buy a car like this for the outright performance but for the nostalgia, brand and feeling and that's why I think it's super great value. I concede that the driving position isn't intuitive so essentially I have one for motorways and another for enthusiastic driving- and I've never gone for the seat height adjustor instead of the handbrake. Parking sensors are standard.

I've got a current model 500, and they've updated the infotainment system to a small tablet style screen. It's a bit slow and low res but infinitely better than that old one. The seat is definitely too high and your head sits so close to the roof! Turning circle is way too big and fuel efficiency crap for such a light car. So many issue lol but even my 1.4L non turbo is great fun!

Very interesting how the 500 Abarth here in the US doesn't have most these faults. Cups holders are larger (because our drinks are bigger.. because we're bigger..), the seat adjustment is different and not in the way at all, and even though the window switch is in the same place, ours looks different over here. Odd to me 🤔
@my67falcon
@my67falcon 6 жыл бұрын
Dax Stevens I drive mine 150 miles a day to work and back. The cup holder (US version) is indeed good sized but God forbid you want to place a second cup somewhere. Not sure why the Aussie version doesn't have cruise control, that would drive me nuts. I'm 6'3" and 300lbs and find both the seats and their ergonomics just about perfect for me. The window switches do take some getting use to. I like the simplicity of the radio (mine is a 2012) but the newer ones do have the touch screen.

What the hell. I have one of the latest ones, it is SO COMFY. I've never accidentally pulled the seat lifter. The back window is soooooooooo smalllllllllll it DOES need a reverse camera. The interior system is so easy and simple compared to many other cars. The cup holders are horrible though, I agree on that. Either gotta have 2 drinks together or put it on the back cupholder which you can reach. Seats at back are comfy as well. Any questions? Ask me. Ewww. US Abarth has none of the problems. Your seat adjuster is definitely on the wrong side, it's obviously still the seat made for the US market, but on the wrong side of the car. Same with the ridiculous location for the turbo boost gauge. You can perfectly control radio and Sirius XM channels and volume without taking hands off the wheel, and the phone controls mentioned are right there on the wheel in the video. The window controls do take getting used to, but they're very intuitive. And holy crap, you've got Continental tires? You got gypped! Pirelli P Zeros are standard here in the states, the comparison isn't fair. I've put 37k miles in the last two years on vacation, three trips to Yellowstone and Glacier, two trips up the west coast from Newport Beach to Whistler, across the US to Jupiter FL for spring training baseball, starting my third big figure eight across the US on highways at 80-100 mph, whistling up mountains for skiing and backpacking. Australians got screwed. photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipPdlxlXDtNkm4ex2oF6-zBQulw8UbP_lxsQf8n5

some of this problems are fairly stupid, and from the comments i notice i'm not the only one thinking it. This is not an Abarth from scratch car, this is a Fiat 500 evolution basically. How is the window button a problem in the Abarth if the Fiat is also like that since 2007 when it was make, and a lot of fiats before were exactly the same, like the punto... Pointing that as a problem is just plain stupid imo or just an opinion from someone who never owned a Fiat, no need to have a instruction manual to find that. Also that car is dated, how are you reviewing a car in 2018 with the same specs my fiat 500 had in 2009

@adzmorris

Mate, um, we do own the car. Pretty I mentioned that in the video. And as I said, some of the controls aren't in intuitive places. Meaning yes you'll get used to it but, these days and for this money, surely you shouldn't have to get used to it. And secondly I don't own a Camira Wagon and actually from memory, I've never even been a passenger in a Camira Wagon. And IF I owned one, I would have had the rusty tailgate fixed as that sort of thing annoys me no end. Finally, if this is the worst review you've ever seen, thank you. I had one and sold it because of the woeful seat. It must be one of the worst drivers seat in automotive history. The ergonomics are comical. Apart from that it's a hoot made 10 times better with the MUST HAVE Monza exhaust! Give it a tight winding mountain road and it's sensational. Fix the seat and ergonomics FIAT and I might be tempted again.

@@adzmorris Actually my diction is near perfect. You sound like an amateur. Your over use of gesticulation is an affectation. Y and Z gen people have ruined the accent with their lazy vowel swallowing, carefree objection to the discipline of enunciation and general lacklustre in writing and presentation. You should listen to the good broadcasters from the ABC of at least two decades ago minimum, to understand how bad you sound. I'm a baby-boomer and take pride in what was in the not too distant past, a very pleasant accent to listen too.
@adzmorris
@adzmorris 4 жыл бұрын
@@ihopetowin I sound like an amateur yet I earn my living from speaking and presenting, how unfair the world is good sir. My dear critic, the English language has, is and will continue to evolve. I highly recommend you listen to the BBC Radio 4 documentary "Fry's English Delight" in which Stephen Fry (surely a master of the English language) explores many aspects of our spoken and written word, embracing how ones geographical location, socioeconomic and cultural influences shape and mould the language we deliver. I wish to emphasise the word "embracing" as any true fan of the language must celebrate in how flexible and diverse English can be. If we attempt to hold back this evolution of language, obsessing over "the good ol days" of the spoken word, do we then stop the evolution of other forms of communication and expression? What of art, dance and music? Do we stop their evolutionary journey too? I respect that you're a fan of the English language you grew up with but use cars as an analogy. I'm an avid fan of the cars I grew up with in the 80's and 90's, but while I wish modern performance cars had the rawness and tactility of my halo cars in the 90's, I equally embrace electric vehicles, hybrid technology and the sheer performance available from modern vehicles. Rather than ripping into me, criticising and, let's be honest, acting like a bit of a grumpy old man, why not either just accept that the language has changed and sit back and hopefully enjoy the video, or just turn the volume down.
