5 Things You Should Know Before Buying a Rolex

On this video, I'm gonna be going over five things you should know before buying a Rolex.
So for some of you, if it's the first time you're buying a Rolex it could be a scary thing.
There's just things to look at and many things to be careful about. You know, you see a lot of horror stories and chitter-chatter, but mostly cuz of people that have no experience. But here are 5 easy things you should look over before buying your first Rolex.
Number 1, not all Rolexes are investments.
Now, when I say this I say this lightly because Rolex overall is the watch that holds value the best over any other brand. Day in and day out, it's the strongest one in my opinion.
But people have this misconception. They thing they can buy any Rolex, just randomly go to the store and play Rolex roulette and just buy whichever random model and then assume that it appreciates a certain amount of percentage per year.
I mean, that's not necessarily the case. Just because you bought a Rolex brand watch doesn't necessarily mean that it's a model in high demand and that the price will be increasing dramatically in the next coming years.
When people say that, they say that they're good investments just because overall there's not too many other products that you're able to buy, use it for so long, and still be able to get back most of the value back from it.
Number 2 is, in most cases except for certain models, it's better to buy pre-owned than new. I just feel that you get a lot more savings and you get a better deal. Yes, there are watches that are going over retail and clearly if you're able to properly massage your AD salesman, you might be able to get it. I highly doubt it though, but for the most part on regular days, not including this last year because Hey, let's face it, for the last fifteen, twenty years, it's been better to buy preowned on a consumer matter. It's just you get a better deal, you let someone else pay full retail, then you buy the watch at a better price.
This shows most, especially on most of the two-tone and solid gold model. On the steel ones, sometimes there's not enough of a difference when the market is high like right now that perhaps it's over retail or in the past where maybe it was very little. But for the most part, I recommend going pre-owned.
So Number 3 is a random one, but I feel that it's necessary to mention it and it's that sapphire crystals will scratch. You wouldn't believe how many people are surprised that they scratch the crystal on their watch or pretty much say that it's not possible to scratch. Yes it is. Go ahead and drag it along a concrete wall and you're gonna see what's gonna happen to the sapphire crystal on your watch, so be very careful. Don't assume that it won't get scratched because it will. You have to be careful and it will cost a lot of money, easily $300 to replace.
Now Number 4 is more for the people that either decided to go brand new, either because they had an opportunity to get a watch that was high demand or maybe just because it's their first watch and they wanted the full experience. I'm not against that. I totally understand how it goes. Been there, done that.
But when you buy one of those brand spanking new watches from an AD and you get the 5-year and order today, we'll double it up to 10 years. Whatever it is, OK? Whenever you get these 10, 15, 20, 30-year warranties which you're probably never gonna use because let's face it, Rolex is like a Toyota in the sense that it never breaks.
I hate to compare it to Toyota, but what I mean is they don't break. They're so well made. They never have a problem. What I wanna say is that these warranties only cover manufactured defects, so if you scratch your watch like we just talked about before or if you drop it or if you leave the...

Disagree. Its always better to buy with box and papers to ensure the watch isn't stolen. Just google and you will hear stories of people sending in their Rolex for service and end up being held onto by Rolex and sending it back to the original owner. You will end up hoping the dealer or individual who sold you the watch are still around and refund you.

Nice advice for the new year Eric, If somebody have a 100 watches collection and live in a condo or even a house it doesn't make sense for them to be hoarding on 100 watches boxes and papers, it is a waste of space. I agree Eric it makes more sense to keep the purchase receipt with the serial number.

On your second point, you said that it's better to buy second hand. But how can I buy second hand on a Rolex that was supposed to appreciate in value? That would mean that I am buying over retail value, am I making sense? For example, say I buy a Hulk at full retail price at its last year of production. A few years later, I want to sell it and it's value has gone up. The buyer looking to get it will pay higher than the full retail price that I originally paid. Do you follow me? I don't fully understand your second point. Can you please elaborate on my scenario. Thanks.
@borjastick
@borjastick 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said except that buying used is as good a deal. Generally the better deal is new from and AD. Difficult though that can be because of the lack of stock. However if you are reasonably flexible then you can buy at the right price not much over retail. I bought a Rolex Explorer 214270 almost new full set at a little over UK retail but still cheaper than France retail at the time given the exchange rate. It's a great watch and often overlooked. There are two Rolexes to always avoid in my opinion; the Oyster perpetual and any Cellini.

A great and informative video. The only thing you missed is to buy only steel sports models. You will lose money if you buy two-tone or solid gold. I know that first hand because I have been in that situation. If you are wealthy and do not anticipate the need to resell it does not matter. This is seldom the case. A lot of watch guys are flippers and if they find something they want more, they will flip whatever they have to get it.

Correct me if I am wrong: Watch buying is less complicated as basically only 2 brands that are worth considering (Rolex and Patek) for investment and the rest you buy because you like it and doesn’t matter if price fall or rise in future. You need proper advise from watch expert if you want to buy the Richard Mille; Jacob Co or some Vintage Patek such as ref 1518. No brainer with tons of cash can win in watch collecting. Just like when photography Camera shift from film to digital; buying Nikon or Canon SLR everyone can be professional instantaneously. You may need some advise if you want to stay above say buying medium format.

There is much more to scratching the watch btw. The movement has lots of expensive parts. Even missallignment of hands can damage other hands and even dial and ruin the movement. The mainspring, pallet fork, gears, rotor axle are all ciritical parts which do fail even in 1 year time on a brand new watch which was taken care of well... You never know.

Pre-owned or Grey, you getting scalped at the moment, people do this as a business, they buy in the queue at AD's and have turnover, then ask double RRP for a 'new' watch they picked up , and flip for 100% markup. I was in a Rolex store recently, guy was picking up a Hulk after a 3 year wait, I asked him if he was going to wear it, reply "it's going on ebay for double man'. So either wait 3 years or get scalped , up to you. Also they do break, from experience, main springs go after 10 years or so with daily wear

First thing that anybody should hear before buying a Rolex - IT WILL NOT MAKE YOU ANY COOLER. And literally NO ONE will notice it in real live, unless you are working with other watch geeks. But even then, they will be more likely to complement your watch if you choose something different, like Breguet, Glashutte Original or H.Moser. If you buying a Rolex just to show off just be sure that you will impress no one. They are good only for collecting likes on instagram. If you are OK with that and still want to buy a Rolex, then you can realy enjoy your watch. Becouse it is a great watch and theres a lot to enjoy.

#1 they don't have watches for sale. #2 they actually do have watches. #3 the purposely make you wait. #4 the above is a sales strategy #5 don't kiss ass to get a Rolex go buy Omega.

Box is not important but papers are! It's not the end of the world if you don't have them but any item you have thats directly associated with the actual watch like the price tag will add to the value and desirability Around 5-10%

2:47 - the sapphire crystal in watches are synthetic sapphire - hardness around 7 instead of natural korund / sapphire should have 9. If you drag the watch on the wall you easly scratch it because on the wall there`s some sand parts (microns) which are quartz particles - hardness 7.

Box and papers not necessary? All dealers look for every reason to underpay! David Duggan only offered me £6,500 for my excellent condition Sea-Dweller 4000. I stated what the selling prices were. He replied that these asking prices are not always realised. Dealers ummm.
