Nice video. A black bear joined me near Glacier NP in Montana. He ambled off. 30 min later a moose dropped by. Then a coyote near sunrise. I did not need to use it, but a bear spray is essential. Many times I have seen glowing eyes many yards away. Works on people too in a real emergency. Use very sparingly.! Using a headlamp that can be turned to red light is a big help but do not forget to turn it off when shooting.

Good advice! I was just in the badlands and had a herd of wild bison and horses approach me while shooting. Good thing I was close to my car and also had bear spray… bison are deadly and aggressive.

Good vid. Thanks. You make focusing harder than it is. Use live view and find that bright star. Move focus ring back and forth until that point of light is as small as you can get it. Then gaffers tape the focus ring so it can't be moved or bumped,
@Apalapse

Thanks! That's basically what I said in the video minus the part about the gaffers tape.

Great tips, thanks for sharing! About the safety... The first time I tried astrophotography (a few weeks back) was a few kilometers away from home, and it counts as the out-of-city. There were no camps around, maybe a few houses. Nobody walked around, I started to capture at 11 PM and then a few cars passed near me. One of them drives very slowly and was very close, being suspicious about what I was doing. The plan was to go from there at 12.30 AM but my father said we can't stay here, so we drive home at 11.45 PM.

Glad you made it home safe! People can get really weird about photographers being out at night and I've had a lot of scary experiences in the field interacting with people. Safety is very important!

Great video! Merci beaucoup! I had a Sony A7iii and I was in impression the the software auto detect if the camera is on tripod and was not required to put the stabilisator off. I'll check for my new Alpha 1.
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, sensor stabilization can really ruin astro shots, that's why I turn it off wheneber I'm doing astro.

Since your in Minnesota can you recommend anywhere good to shoot in the Southern Metro area, the best I can find currently is NE of Northfield I'm homing to find some where darker not on the side of the road within an hour of driving.
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 3 жыл бұрын
Check this map and aim for a green/blue zone: www.lightpollutionmap.info/ I think where you're at now is probably the best you'll get... south metro is so hard to work with vs. where I am up in North Dakota and where my parents live in Woodbury, so I'm sorry I don't have more info but it is super hard to get pure dark skies down there.

Hi! I love this channel 🤩 it is very illustrative. I currently enjoy astrophotography and I'm learning a lot here 🤓 I have a Canon EOS Rebel T6i camera so I wish I could take pictures of the Milky Way. I don't know which lens to buy for my camera and to be able to get good results. Greetings.

I have the same camera as yours. The basic kit lens works absolutely fine. But any lens with low aperture is plus.

I cant agree more about safety! Im a new to astro and just last night found a spot on google maps, local state park boat launch and camp site. I was going to go out and take some shots but good thing i read the reviews of the place because it is a hangout for sketchy homeless and otherwise undesirable hang abouts. Going out in the middle of the woods alone with 5k of gear and my brand new vehicle isnt something i take lightly even with a concealed weapon.

Yeah it's crazy how lucky people are when they are out all alone doing photography. It's very important to at least have mace/pepper spray with you for any animals or dangerous people.
