As an audio engineer grad, I think many youtubers and content creators really need to learn about compression. The level of audio bounces from quiet to loud to quickly a lot of the time and a compressor will keep that nice and tight in volume!

What? Is that why my recorded videos have some bg noices like hiss? I used different mics but the dB on my DSLR cam are high and everything there is a hiss. Then I have to eliminate it with an audio program.

Hey @Titus Santiago - I hear you my friend. When I first started, I didn't know enough about audio. I later learned that my lav mic was running hot. A friend of mine--who'd done some studio recording work--came over and helped me apply some filters in post that really improved the audio on my videos. Now, I pay more attention to the audio and will even trash a video if the audio of off! Cheers Rick

Totally agree with you on this. During my early vlogs I struggled so much with poor audio, so much so that I purchased a cheap shotgun mic for £20 and the audio vastly improved, as far as a dead cat I just found an old coat I was throwing out with a fur lined hood, cut out the fur and made my own mic dead cat cover for free. That all said my most recent vlogs, I have solely been using a Rode Smart Lav+ and its brilliant, I just plug it into my mobile phone, record and Im away On a final note I'd also agree with a hand clap to sync the audio so much so the hand clap has now become part of each intro to my vlogs. Keep up the great work!

I need to get a mic for video speaking auditions using a cell phone that fits on the stand. Sometimes have to be further back to show full body length when slating but usually waist up. Which one to get? Hiding wires sounds complicated but possible. Condenser lavalier probably best. Plug and play sounds good for not so techy person.

I really appreciate you admitting feeling like a novice with this. Starting out, it was always so intimidating that all my idols seemed to know everything about everything. All round experts. Which is rubbish. I'm sure a lot of students starting out will see this and heave a sigh of relief - because they understand they understand the basics, now, but also realize they don't have to be experts.

For years, I never knew the rational for the clap board you see in movie takes other than to document the take information. I honestly didn't know that there was a reason it was still used or what the snap was even for. Thinking about it now, it makes complete sense! I noticed that the -12 dB level sounded good when processing audio and I use it as a target, but I never knew that it was really the sweet spot in audio. Thanks for the info! It's super appreciated!

I like keeping my dialogue between -18dB and -5dB, my SFX at -24dB to -18dB, my music at around -36dB to -12dB (depending on the score) and then very important, a noise or atmosphere track at -48dB and -36dB.

My wife just broke my existing mic. Not happy. Nicely explained. As we need a mic for run and gun, and still want to capture ambience that outdoors offers, I went with the Rode Pro. Perhaps in i'll get the other rode when I replace my 70D. Right now the camera is too far away from me to use a shotgun. With the 15-35, I can get up close and can get away from the lapel mic.Ahhh... new camera... Can't wait.

Audio is definitely my next investment. I had a couple videos that had really bad wind noise. I'm not sure if I could have done anything about that in Premiere Pro. Like cutting down the spikes. But I felt the videos themselves were pretty good so I posted them anyway. Until I get better gear I won't shoot outside when it's windy.

Such a great video!!! So helpful. I've gotten as far as owning a shotgun mic, so this was perfect for me. Can you do another video going more in depth on how to set your audio levels in your DSLR, examples of over exposed and under exposed audio, and what you look for to know your levels are right. I'd love to know more about audio recorders or using multiple sound streams. I've found that my action cam takes better audio than my DSLR, so I'm hoping to use both in some situations to get multiple angles or just record better audio on my action cam if I'm shooting with my DSLR. Can I synch them the same as using an audio recorder? Do you ever use stereo mics? How would I add audio recorded by one device to video from another device in post? Thanks and keep up the great work!
@kevin_cools

Good video but I need some help here! I only seem to get good audio with studio mics (I use a NT1-kit). With Laveliers or a Rode Video Mic Pro I seem to get tons of noise. I don't go over -12db, I monitor it, but when bumping it up in post (because the levels are way too low otherwise), you get a ton of noise again. This happen with both the GH5 or an external recorder like the Zoom H5.

From a production/editing point of view you mentioned the sync clap. Now, most KZfaqrs jumpcut between sentences to remove dead space, but with the audio being external and having to sync it, do you stop recording and start a new take for each segment as well as whenever you mess up a line or do you do one long recording and cut/splice it all in post?

Great video but I think you missed a really important tip. Using Pre amps with your mic. It's what sets the video mic pro apart from all other rode mics. Plus with a lot of cameras like Canon dslrs have really bad built in pre amps, using a mic with a built in pre amps, a recorder with a good pre amp, or a dedicated pre amp will leave a big difference in audio.

It's always stressed that you must record ROOM TONE. The problem, room tone is constantly changing, especially when you have traffic noise even if you're recording inside a building. What works for me is just trying to find two or three seconds of silence after an actor has spoken, and use that in specific areas of silence during a scene.
