I am 52 and thought I knew pretty much verything about suits and ties. The 3" rule as related to the tie width and lapel width is an excellent rule of thumb. Thanks for your effort.

Great video, the quality is really going up! I think the general rule is to pay attention to contrast. A contrast can be a lot, like a color, a pattern, structure, brightness/lightness and so on. The contrasts you are using should be a medium and a small one. Mixing them both will make an great impression. If you really want to look serious, stick to one medium contrast. To little contrast will make you look shy, while to much will make you aggressive (We learned that from one of your videos.). Two contrasts will look more playful than one, three are very borderline and four different contrasts will send you directly into a clown university. That's by the way true for everything you will design, contrast is king.

i match based on soft suit/soft tie and bold suit/bold tie. Some patterns are more subdued than others so it's important to not have a tie that pops out too aggressively against a more subtle suit

Hi Antonio - One of your articles on ties says "As a rule, a tie, when tied, should just cover a buckle on your belt." Doesnt that seem a bit low? I usually aim for the tip of the tie to be just above the belt buckle, and I've seen it worn higher. What looks sharpest?

I like to wear ligt blue ties with some thin white patterns on a light/dark grey suit because my eyes are blues and the match is perfect !

My favourite combination is "the Americana": navy blue, pin striped suit, plain white shirt, red and white striped tie

I'm digging that color combination of purple and olive! Looks fantastic! I wish I could wear an olive jacket, but it doesn't work with my complexion. Simplest way, if in doubt, *keep brands together* . Each brand is already working with a specific color palette, so no matter what you throw together, the colors will always compliment each other. Designers use these same rules to make marketing work. Great example of a color palette is googles marital design color guide. This was put together by google, to keep android app developers a bit more synchronize with their color choices. This then help the application tie into the android os instead of sticking out so horribly. Gray suits or gray with any patterns are the easiest to match. Navy, charcoal and black solid suits are simple to match. Tan and brown's suits get a bit challenging to match with shirts and ties. You're kinda stuck with lighter or darker tan tones, blues, Ivory's, or burgundy.

Could you possibly do an episode on piecing together a wardrobe buying from thrift stores such as Goodwill or Salvation army?

So if I understand...... All my work suits are grey, charcoal or navy. Most have a very subtle pin stripe, although a couple have a chalk stripe. I almost always way plain white shirts. From what you have said I can basically wear any tie of classic sized tie?

Hello Antonio! First time commenting. I'm trying to match my girlfriend for a summer ball. She's wearing a black and white dress and I have access to a black suit and a light grey suit. What are your recommendations for tie/handkerchiefs/shoes/shirts for each suit (for the black suit i'll obviously be wearing black shoes but for the light grey suit I am slightly confused). I've got an unlimited budget. Much appreciated.

It's all down to how comfortable with the color combination. For me, I don't know if I can do the brown jacket with the blue shirt and tie.

I think this is quite a good video and I've given it a thumbs up. I just want to point out that the video really seems to be 70% about how to pick ties and 30% on how to match a tie with an outfit. It would be helpful to see a better explanation of how to pick a good colour/pattern of the tie given the colours of the shirt/jacket.

Hey I want an opinon. I have a midnight blue blazer that I love, it fits great. I usually wear a bright bold red shirt under it and a blue/red paisly tie (the red matches the red on the shirt perfectly and the blue matches the blazer perfectly) I wear a gambler block stetson and a brown rodeo belt and brass buckle. usually wear black jeans and black boots. I am looking at a pair of white jeans and a pair of brown boots to match the belt. What do you guys think?
