Something I may add as someone who has played for over 10 years, is that no matter who you are, you're going to have "off" days. Even speedrunners do. There will be days where you get your ass served well-done on a silver platter by a monster you've killed probably dozens, if not hundreds of times. There will be days you feel like a god in game, play extremely well and feel on top of the world, and days where you just can't quite get your spacing right, can't quite get your timing right, get impatient, complacent and punished. Don't get discouraged, just take it easy and enjoy yourself.

Duuude, I experienced this with two fights against Hyper Glavenus in the same day. It was my first fight against him as Valor Gunlance, and I DID feel like a god. I saw this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oMVlrbmUz7XNe6M.html) of a person fighting G3 Glavenus and particularly admired that VERY subtle dodge they do in the first 30-40 seconds. I managed to do that myself during the fight. I balanced Valor evades with backstepping and carted maybe once tops, didn't even burn too many mega potions. The time after that, I was trying my best, but I just could not fall back into the rhythm I had the first time. I didn't even come close to making him limp before getting my 3 carts. It was likely due to cockiness but still, I couldn't believe how I did so great the first time with slapping around Black Cherry Swordboi, but messed up so badly the second time. Third time was better but I still didn't get 'em.

"Think of it as turn-based" is my favorite tip, except that your turn never comes when facing Rajang in Iceborne...
@norsehorse84
@norsehorse84 4 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. It's just your "turn" is usually very short, but it exists. Plus, for the most part, Rajang's moves have very tight hitboxes, so you can dodge through most of his moves. But like all fast monsters, Rajang does have bigger windows to do things. It's known that almost all monsters in a MH game teach you certain aspects of the game through their moveset. I think as a monster, Rajang in World teaches you to value your quick attacks for every weapon, and understand not to overcommit to an nth degree.

Your turn when fighting Rajang is narrow, but he also gets multiple turns in a row, you don’t get this. This is balanced by his proportionately less Health. When Rajang “sweeps the floor” he might get an extra turn to jump back, followed by another extra turn to “spin forward.” After that, you have about a 2 second window turn to counter attack, for example.

Knowing what skills can counter a monster's abilities can also be a huge help. So often I see newcomers complain about some mechanic or other that can be completely blocked by armor skills. While none of them are ever required, they can make your hunts SO MUCH SMOOTHER. Tremor res against Uragaan, high-grade earplugs against Diablos, paralysis res against Kirin, and more exist for the express purpose of making gameplay mistakes less punishing in certain situations, and can be the difference between a cart and a successful hunt. Heck, I made a MHGU monster info chart and for this very reason specifically chose to include roars, tremors, wind, statuses, and blights the monsters could inflict.

I agree. I'm playing Monster Hunter Generation right now and I'm currently working on getting my Dreadqueen set to level 6 in order to unlock the skills. The D. Rathian's new moves caught me off guard a few times and instantly afflicted me with heavy poison which I was not expecting. My health starts going down like a house of cards anytime I was afflicted with it, and a few times I was re-poisoned right after my Antidote cleared it, but since everyone's Hunter loves flexing, I usually got re-poisoned during the flex animation. After I cleared the first Deviant mission for D. Rathian I decided to try out the Poison armor skill which negates that effect and HOO-BOY my life got EXTREMELY easier after I did that! D. Queen's pink poison spikes she lays down after certain moves? "Mmm, is this a lavender-scented candle? Extravagant!" D. Queen's standard 180-degree tail swipes? "Pff. 'Tis but a flesh wound!" Her diving move where she descends upon you and does a roundhouse swipe with her tail? That thing still hits me because I can't get the timing down, but at least it doesn't poison me anymore!

I see your point but I was under the impression that MHGU was like so many other games where quite often, the DPS increase from skills like Artillery, Attack, Sharpness boosts, etc. would trump negation of status effects. You do point out newcomers so I'm guessing that you might add on that more experienced players could just outright skip the gear with these skills on them? I dunno, it's one of those things where I'm not sure whether it's a crutch or a viable alternative. I can see the arguments for both sides but my only experience with Monster Hunter is like 1-2 hours in 3 Ult, and 200 in MHGU. Definitely nowhere near the numbers of so many other commenters on this video. Do you have that info chart on-hand, by the way?

Very true in older games like MHFU with how robotic the monsters were. The "turns" have blurred more as the generations passed, especially in MHW. But there's still this certain rhythm to it. IMHO, that's why Frenzied / Hyper monsters were a bit more tricky... since the timing changes mess up the rhythm. At least that was the case for me.

I am going to let you in on a secret... one many people will argue is not true and data can say otherwise, but in my experience, this is the most important thing: The strongest weapon in EVERY game... is the one you are the most comfortable with. Do not just rely on numbers or popularity or "the meta" for what weapon to go for, but instead the one that fits your hand the best. So if you tell me that Great Swords are the best weapon in the game, I will say otherwise because I, myself, do not feel comfortable with them. You tell me Sword and Shield are the most useless weapons ever and should be dedicated to beginning only, and I will showcase how powerful they can truly be. Again, its not because I play by a meta or by numbers, but by what feels comfortable to play with. So before you take on your opening Great Bird Wyvern and make a name for yourself, take the time to pull out all the weapons from the box and see which ones feels good to YOU. You can go solo main or you can keep a variety because some weapons feel better at certain monsters. Ultimately, if you are using a weapon you are not comfortable with, you are simply not going to have fun.

I have always used a bit of everything except GL and HH(excluding FU Kushala, it was surprisingly effective for me then), because of play style some times for certain monsters or even just a day by day basis. Some days I'll destroy a Rathalos efficiently with SnS, other days I'll do better with GS or CB. Experimentation and not being afraid to try new things is super important for not only doing well, but also having fun and having new goals for equipment and knowledge on a certain match up.

This is the most underrated secret I think, but the impact is great. I mean most people asking for what is the best weapon etc2, technically speaking you can use all the weapon to kill monsters but like you I always said "Why don't you go to training room and try those 14 weapons, see if you like certain cool weapon instead of best" (I dunno if training room exist in the old MH game.) I usually also put the person who ask question into this situation too "Let's say I ask you to hunt Rathalos, you already use 500 times X weapon, and then even if Y weapon is stronger than X you only got 10 use of it. Do you think you will have faster time hunting with Y weapon? You probably will have faster time with X weapon because you familiar with the movesets.

"Ultimately, if you are using a weapon you are not comfortable with, you are simply not going to have fun." This resonates with me, unlike the Hunting Horn. I have never used it and I don't think I ever will use that weapon, the gunner weapons, or the Hammer. I'm a Blademaster through-and-through, but the Hammer especially, is a weapon that I simply do not vibe with. I thought that since it has a charge mechanic similar to Greatsword (started as a GS main) I would be able to hack it and use that weapon with ease. Hammer replied to me and said, "Naw, bro." I personally do not like how in order to be the most effective with the Hammer you have to aim almost exclusively for the head of every monster. I do not like how I am taking away my own ability to cut tails and damage other body parts (that may be safer to hit) in exchange for a possible 10-ish second K.O.

For me, the biggest lesson I learned when I started out was armor skills. Like many other new hunters, I just ended up grabbing which ever pieces had the highest defense I could get at the time and roll with it. It wasn't until a group of random players pointed out my mistake and helped me understand the importance of armor skills by having me pick a full armor set then recognizing the skills working to my advantage during a hunt. I then explored other armor sets and realized I was missing out on a lot of benefits that could have helped me in prior hunts. From there on out I always farmed for full sets and explored different skills until I was ready for mixing armor pieces, not for their defence, but for their skills. (I started in Tri)

One tip that improved my fights with virtually every monster was taking the time to learn their trip and stagger zones. Learning how to get a monster down and struggling to get up makes some more annoying targets a lot more manageable. Rathalos is a good example, where if you smash its legs enough while it's grounded, you can trip it long enough to deal a lot of damage. Hit smart, then hit hard.

How would you advise learning these zones? Would it be feasible to go into a low-level fight with a high-damage weapon and try to attack the areas that'd cause them to fall over? Related, what things can actually stagger/knock down monsters? EazyRun, another person who replied to you, mentioned wings/tail. Do those knock flying monsters out of the sky? I don't remember hitting those areas and seeing them fall because of it.
@luntfuzzle
@luntfuzzle 4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the monster. Generally I find landing a heavy attack or a counter on a monster's head while airborne will ground it relatively easily. My general rule for assuming how to trip is to target the limbs it's moving with. To stagger, you respond to an attack with a well timed heavy attack, or otherwise use any mobility you have in order to land hits while the monster is attacking. In MHW, I get most of my staggers attacking weak spots relentlessly. In MHGU I get them mostly by timing counterattacks
@lorddragoon001
@lorddragoon001 4 жыл бұрын
@@armorend1334 For how flinching/tripping works, you have to imagine that there is another hp bar attached to every limb on a monster, there head, tail, wings legs, etc. whenever a certain amount of damage is done to that part a monster will flinch in response, some monsters have more noticeable flinches than others on some body parts, an already used example would be a Rathalos leg which, once the threshold is met will trip to the side of the leg you hit and give you a good opening, another good example would be Kushala Daora's head which when the stagger limit is reached will reel back and then fall over for an extended period of time. Important things to note about this is that every time a parts stagger limit is reached it resets and the requirement to flinch that part again goes up. furthermore if a monster is already in some form of CC be it trip, trap, flinch, stagger, KO or an uninterruptible animation then reaching the stagger limit on a given part will "eat" that flinch or trip, in other words the stagger will reset to full and increase but you'll reap no benefits. A good example of this would be breaking a Nergigantes' spikes when he's already down from a previous set being broken. Lastly most of the time a part breaking is tied to a stagger count of some kind. example a Rathalos' tail gets cut off instead of flinched after taking enough damage to be flinched 3 times. although you may only see 1 or even no tail flinches if they were "eaten" by you attacking the tail when he's tripped for example. There is a great more detail like this in most of the games systems that a player can learn with time and the thirst for knowledge to seek it out, but I hope this little bit helps.

When I started playing monster hunter (MH2) I also did the observation hunts, but also in the obsession hunts I like to take the attacks of the monster on purpose. When taking these attacks I discovered which attack was the most dangerous and which was the least dangerous, so sometimes when when the monster sent a weak attack I tried to make a "trade" and that can lead to giving me an opening to attack more or if punished with little damage, but I only did it when I already knew the monster pattern in the fight.

As someone who started with MH3U when I was 13. There are 4 tips which helped me get better as a hunter the very 1st tip I can give is to "dance with the monster" so to speak and what I mean is that you observe whe monsters movement and act accordingly to it but also paying attention to what you use whether it be blade or gun which is very similar to what gaijin said about the observation hunts. The Yin and Yang of monster hunter, is the core foundation of what makes it fun for me and I hope that can help you guys as well. The 2nd tip I can give is regarding your weapon, just because you have 1000 raw dmg on a GS doesn't necessarily mean you know how to use it properly. Understanding a weapons moveset is crucial as there are options that you might not know and or are obvious such as Valor spirit slash 1 giving a guard point or that critical juncture works with roars. By understanding your weapon and how the move works you can then implement those moves when hunting monsters and this combined with the first point will make you a great hunter. The 3rd tip I can give is that Item management and food. in hunts as that is pretty much a factor on a successful hunt depending on monster. Its a good idea to prepare essentials for the hunt, combo book 1 and 2 are essential Imo as you gonna be needing a lot of Mega potions once high and G rank hit as your armor won't save you if you play reckless. Eat canteen food even if you don't have everything unlocked yet. It'll help regardless, go for defence if you need it as well as resistances but keep in mind that HP and stamina are important. Go for felyne insurance so you have a safety net for 1 death in a hunt it'll give less stress trust me. My 4th and final tip is the armor, skills and resistances. This is the final part but it's a crucial one for newcomers and returning players. Just stacking on defence stat sounds great but when paired with poor element resistance when fighting a monster you want is a immediate death no question about it. If you fight whilst using a armor that is weak to the monster you are fighting, you won't live long unless you know it's moveset and your weapons moveset. Skills are also important as they are beneficial for the most part. Always try to go for Earplugs if you don't want to be ina pickle with a monsters roar when you are low health, every skill is different and some skills don't work with a specific playstyle so keep that in mind.

Another tip: go on any search engine and analyze the monster. Hitboxes, elemental weaknesses, weakspots, breakable parts, etc.. Analyzing the monster will tell you how to effectively hunt a certain monster. You might be able to kill a monster faster just because you're taking advantage of a monster's weak points. If you want to find the elemental weakness of a certain monster, look at that monster's armor at the smith. You don't need to craft the armor, just look at the armor's elemental resistances. Weak body parts on a monster will pour out more blood when hit with a blademaster weapon than more resistant body parts.

Also not only more blood (In world blood is optional, remember) but you just feel it I remember when I started palying in 3U and i just felt, somehow, that there were parts where attacking felt less satisfactory Later on I noticed why. When you hit a "strongspot" the blade passes through like butter, but when you hit a weakspot it stops for a second, making it feel kinda meaty. That right there, teaching a twelve-year-old this kind of mechanics without words, is why this franchise is a masterpiece

That armor tip is a really good one. I really like that about the Monster Hunter games, that the armor almost always represents the monster it's crafted from; giving similar advantages from the monster but also giving you their weaknesses. It's like you're truly inhabiting them when you wear it.

DO NOT GET TRAPPED IN THE "META" SETS!!!(This is especially true for World/Iceborne) Do Not write off Quality of Life skills, HG Earplugs and Tremor RES can create new attack opening for you. Build your armour sets around your Play-style or to Counter the Monster you are going to hunt. Using skills that benefit your play-style will end up with you enjoying the game much more than using the "Max DPS" set. Are you reckless and like to live on the edge? Take Resentment, Heroics, and Guts. Like to play things safe? Divine Blessing, Mushroomancer, and Health boost are the first things that come to mind. You should also never be afraid to make a set to counter a specific monster, element or status. - I hate Zinorge, so when I fought Thunder Lord in Generations I had 30 Thunder RES so all his thunder attacks would do almost nothing to me. - Negate Poison/Paralysis/Sleep/Stun/Blast Blight can make hunting some monster monumentally easier. - Basically, if there is something a monster does that annoys you or you have trouble dealing with there is most likely a skill to counter it. PS: Evade Distance Up is a great skill for Switch Axe users

Though it may seem obvious, learn your weapon! When getting my friends into monster hunter they almost always start with the same “if it works...” mentality. When thinking like this, people tend to get bored or give up much quicker than you’d think. Definitely take the time to find a weapon you like and learn about how it works (attack speed, sharpness management, special inputs, etc.). Learning the more complex moves of your weapon type opens up your play style immensely and lets you deal with way more situations than you previously though you could. Though some weapons can seem very overbearing when it comes to the different number of and skill required for individual moves, figuring out how all of these are applicable can make you a much better hunter! It may sound like a lot of work, but in the end you will probably have a lot of fun experimenting and getting better at hunting and I think that it makes the game feel a lot more rewarding when you finish a hunt through your own practice and skill. Everyone here was a new hunter at some point, so don’t feel bad about not getting everything at once. Take things slow and learn at your own pace and I think you’ll enjoy the fruits of your labor. I’m always really excited to see people get into the series so I hope this helps at least one person out there. Good luck out there and happy hunting!

I recommend the weapon training quests from village 1star for this. The quests unlock early, have set equipment, and set you up in an arena that keeps the monster from limping away and other monsters from interfering (rhenalphos ruining great sword charges...). Once you get a feel for your weapon, try some arena quests to see if you like the weapon enough to commit the time and resources to crafting armor sets and upgrading the weapon. You can use your arena kill time as evidence of your improvment to keep from getting discouraged.

This is such a good tip. When I was trying to get my friend into World he started off using lance because I apparently oversold the 'can be difficult but is very rewarding' premise to him, but thing is he hates the lance. Before we got into him actually doing hunts I told him to hit the training room and pull out all 14 weapons and mess around with them for 5-10 minutes each settling on Insect Glaive as his favorite. Yeah...it seems like a HUGE waste of time, but at the end of the day he likes everything except Lance, Gunlance and Hunting Horn and it was that time in the lab that made him realize that.

Then we get the migratory hit-boxes... which mostly appears to be from a rounding error glitch in the code that scales monsters to be bigger and smaller. Or in Special quests where the monster is not a size the monster should normally appear to be. AND then we get the hit box nonsense that has Plesioth infamous. Oh gosh--yeah, when I started thinking of the fights as turn based it greatly improved my ability to figure out the monsters. It just kind of happened one day as well--I was all... "wait a second" and boom, had it. I would add: be completely okay with fighting monsters multiple times. This hit me when I first jumped into Arena fights a few times--and noticed the armour/weapons weren't so much overpowered (well, some were) but were scaled to be a certain challenge level... and you got different times complete for the ranks of S-Class, A-Class and B-Class. This had me going, "wait a second--if I keep fighting a monster, I can figure out how to kill them quicker with even crappy weapons" This mixed with me noting I was rushing missions because of that timer mechanic--even when I did not have to rush the mission. Just keep on taking on various monsters--and you will get to the point where they are super easy. Which, the more advanced monsters are typically similar to earlier monsters but with slight differences in patterns. Sure... Dread Queen Rathian is a complete leap from Yuan Kut Ku... and if you fought Dread King Rathalos directly after that, the complaint would be valid--but there are several different monsters you face between the two--that add slight variations on how the monsters behave and do stuff. You master each slight change in how the monsters work (but other than that, are fairly similar)--and the next step up isn't that hard. Essentially, my advice on that is... go all Teddy Roosevelt on the monsters in the game. If you can defeat a monster... can you defeat a monster in less than five minutes? This type of practice mostly makes it so that when you meet monsters you've not run into before, you will generally be able to use your skills on other monsters to have it so you don't get your ass kicked.

As a player since FU currently playing GU, I would say build you skill set based on your playstyle. No use having crit eye and atk up if you can’t hit the monster effectively. Like for me, admittedly I play fairly recklessly, I know I can exploit some monster moves to deal some damage( eg when Akantor stands up to roar or when tigrex winds up a 360) but it means I take damage in return. So I built my armour skill set around this. -Destroyer to break monster part and possible incite a flinch. -Wind Resistance(high) so I can avoid wind press to attack -Mushroomancer, I bring 12 max potions with me to offset the damage I take sometimes(10 dragon toadstools 2 max potions). Also as a solo player, this is really useful in G rank. -Speed sharpen, cuts down the slow sharpening animation to allow me to sharpen virtually anywhere. This one is really useful for those monsters that give you nearly 0 time for anything, looking at you rajang. I am however refering to GU since I don’t play world but it should still apply in world. Actually it should be easier since you use a different skill system.

As a veteran my tip is that don't be afraid to try other weapons when you're struggling with some monster. Yeah of course with enough practice and observation of the monster you can beat any monsters with any of your preferred weapon. But through experience i know, and maybe you notice it as well that certain weapon/playstyle works for some monster well but not in other. For example back in mhfu i main gs/ls which both have long attacks animation and because of this long animation a red khezu always kicks my ass because of it's stupid electric charge that he always spam that's why i think i can just use range weapon so i can still attack it while is stationary but i can't be bother carrying bullets or coatings so i just switch to SNS everytime i hunt khezu for it's mobility short attack animation so i can roll faster when he's charging, so yeah.

All of these are great help! Often hunters from other find themselves constantly retreating to heal, taking damage for almost every attack they try to get in. In other games health is just a sacrifice you gotta make to get damage in return, and it's expected to get hit and be forced to retreat. You should't be getting hit in MH, or at least no constantly. Getting hit repeatedly doesn't only burn through your heals, but it will eventually stun you and punish you with ailments against harder monsters. This is where learning the monster and thinking of the game as turn-based is extremely good advice, in MH you shouldn't go in expecting to trade like in other games, heals are for recovering after messing up unexpectedly. Also, always having your pouch in order (make loadouts!), eating before leaving, etc... are also great mantras. Just making sure you don't forget about this stuff is worth so much. Thanks for the video!

Over the 11 years I've played these games, I'd say you pretty much hit the nail on the head for the most important tips. My most important tip for new players is to experiment with all the weapons and get comfortable exploring all the different ways to approach a hunt. Every monster has a weapon matchup that will be more favourable than others and lining that monster up with the weapon you feel most efficient with will often make the hunt more enjoyable. Understanding the layout of a map and using the terrain to your advantage is also a fundamental strategy as well. Some monsters are easier to hunt in close quarters so they have less maneuverability (the Drome Raptors) while others may require more room to avoid attacks that have large hitboxes or abrupt animations (Garuga). You may need a flat environment or some elevation depending upon whether the monster has attacks dependant on these elevation changes (Barioth) or if you want to focus on a mount (SafiJiva or Kulve Tarroth). Understanding type alignments is nice but also understanding ailment threshholds and effectiveness may also change your tactics (Poison being highly effective against Brute wyverns in GU is good to know when you have to hunt monsters with varying elemental weaknesses like in "The Beasts Of Brawn"). A lot of the advice I can give boils down to everything you've already said, so I'm glad to see this video is here.

This applies mostly to older titles, but if you're having trouble avoiding fast attacks like Tigrex's charge or Rajang's laser, keep in mind that they target your location at the moment they start to turn around. Meaning you can avoid attacks before they even begin, just move a bit to the side while they're turning themselves and enjoy your free time to drink a potion or reload your ammo. Old World monsters move in a very cubic fashion, so they're easier to manipulate.

tips for switch axe mains specifically: don't think of your weapon as 2 seperate modes. Instead, weave your switches in mid-combo for high damage output and charge management. Sometimes you can't get out of an attacks range because it's an area-wide attack (like vaal hazak's breath weapon). Sometimes you need to just turn the brain off and swing that axe like you're gonna die if you don't. More often than not, you're going to stagger the monster with your incredible burst of damage. If you're right up close to a monster with a breath attack, use your hack'n'slash combo right as they begin the breath attack. You're going to get a ton of swings in before they finish. You might even save a friend with your super-aggro staggers.

More things for switch axe: divine blessing keeps your damage taken down for undodgeable attacks, sword mode doesn't bounce unless super dull so use that on parts that you have trouble damaging, and bring part breaker because partbreaks 9/10 cause flinches, which will save your life.

That is definitely the key to nailing this game. Starting out looking for those openings and going on complete defense when the monster attacks is the best way to start. You start getting faster and squeezing in more damage when you catch yourself thinking “hey I bet I could be right over -there- and get another attack off” or “I know I usually wait for the attack to end but I think that last part of the animation is just the mon resetting itself, I could start running in right beforehand”. From there you just naturally squeeze it more and more.

Item management, take time in-between hunts to make sure you're stocked on person and in your item box for potions, whetstones, and crafting mats for bombs and various supply items. This isn't a tip to help get better at the game but I still think everyone should do this. At the end of every hunt, after you're done carving the monster, go to a mining spot and mine for as long as you can. The earlier you start doing this the better. By the end of the game it will have saved you a huge amount of time by getting you materials and even talismans that you would have to grind for otherwise.

For MHW: Stock yourself with Mega Nutrients and Mandragora and have them in your item load out. You can use the consumtion option for Max Potion in your radial menu to auto craft 5 more of them while you are out on a hunt. Thats 7 Max Potions and usually should be more then enough for a hunt.

Veteran since MHFU and one of the things I gotta add is to have fun and don't get frustrated. Kylo B said it in the comments and I agree that some days you may be a god and some days you are gonna be tossed around like old sweaty socks. Just have fun and don't let yourself get frustrated or you tend to make more mistakes and have more mishaps. If you are stuck just ask for some help in any community thread or in the game. Most people tend to have no problem to help with a hunt of certain monsters for materials. Patience is a virtue especially in Monster Hunter so take your time and have fun :).

For new players in the mh franchise, plz upgrade the armor that's available to you and stop worrying about meta stuff. You'll have tons of time to get that when the time is right but if you're new and really have no idea what you're doing but looked up meta stuff and is now refusing to upgrade your low rank armor; then you're just hurting yourself and everyone else in the hub with your constant carting. Take it slow and steady and you'll get there.

Oh, the turn-based tip is just the best. It was precisely what made me transition from being beaten to death by the first story quest Rathalos to soloing High Rank quests because I have no friends. Once you get that hit&run tactic mindset inside the head everything flips on its back for the better. By all means and for all intents and purposes, that is *THE* best advice a nugget hunter can have. Eventually they'll grow proper hands with most weapons and the wide spectrum of tactics they represent, but for hunters like me who have absolutely 0 skills and fail miserably both at life & hunts 100% of the time, that makes us not useless. Thanks for the video, Gaijin-sensei. 👍

As a self-proclaimed monster researcher, I can attest to the importance of tip #1. Thats the first advice I offer to others. In the case of World, I also go as far as to tell them to take advantage of expeditions and the ghillie mantle to follow the monsters when out of combat to learn where they usually spawn, what sections they prefer and how they act and react to the world at large. Knowing the monster is as important than the fight itself, and spending time to learn what you can about it will save you a lot of time and energy down the line when monsters are faster and sporting new attacks. I also think of the hunts like wrestling matches. The monster and the player will always take turns being dominant. Dont believe for a second that you'll always have control over the fight, as things can shift out of favour just like that. There are times when I smack the monster around for 5 mins straight only to be dodging and taking my own hits for 10 with little time to attack. Accepting that things are out of hand in the moment is important.

Something that always helped me, was trying out a bunch of weapons. If I ever got bored with a weapon, or stuck on a monster, I would try and learn a different weapon, and come back later to fight the monster again with that weapon. It can take some time, but it's very helpful; because you may find that a new weapon that you pick up will be able to counter another monster better than the one you're using at the time.

MH Gen U Tip: if your going to make a day or 2 be armor/weapon grinding. Write Down your list of things that you need to get. and double check on what Ranks you can get them on. Some can be as breaking a piece only to the difference between carving vs Capture reward off chance. If you have a 4 Team up in the hub to help with material grind, things can go alittle more smoother and possibly quicker (depending on what kind of monster and depending on what hunter/friends you bring along).

One thing that helped me was to take note of the sheathing times of weapons. Bigger weapons take longer to put away so you have three options to stay alive; block the attack so you dont get caught while sheathing, invest in quick sheath, or dodge the attack but be careful because some weapons shorten your evade distance when unsheathed.

I think this will help a lot of newcomers! Thinking of it as a turn based game makes so much sense. I have seen a lot of new players in world just doing a Leeroy Jenkins into the monster and then carting. As a mh Tri (wii) veteran, I have found another way to make hunts so much easier for newcomers. When I started I struggled a lot, even with easy monsters, learnig the weaknesses and weakspots of the monsters I was trying to hunt greatly helped

One tip that I need to keep reminding myself of is that a good kill time doesn't mean anything if you're not a speedrunner, so it's not worth pursuing when your gear or skill isn't up to scratch. As long as you had fun then a long hunt is time well-spent. I say this after taking over half an hour to kill Barioth in Iceborne with a MR1-level Lance as I was learning the weapon. I was having heaps of fun so it didn't feel like I wasted a load of time. I'll focus on that better kill time when I get better gear and even then I don't plan on trying to be a speedrunner! And another is more of a subjective one, but never dismiss a weapon type that doesn't appeal to you. Not to say that you have to learn as many weapons as soon as possible, I learned a lot of my mains over the course of years. I've been playing since 2014 and just very recently the bow finally clicked with me and the lance is starting to when I utterly hated using them before.

I take pride in my patience and knowledge in Monster Hunter, and a finished hunt is better than a failed one, even if it takes until one minute left.

For me, one of the most important parts about learning a monster is that monsters have preferred combos where they perform a fixed sequence of 2 or 3 different attacks _in a row._ Rathian, for example, is well-known for doing a rushdown tackle three times in a row, so try to find the _larger_ patterns and not just individual moves. One of the easier patterns to learn is that many monsters will perform tail swipes twice in a row.

This idea of a non turn based game being playable as a turned base game (most of which suck due to tedium, depending on patience and what people like) is an outstanding way to design a game.
