Too often we ignore these and get carried away by the new gear talk. So today I want to look at 5 tips that will instantly improve your bird photography.
Understanding and incorporating these bird photography tips will allow you to gain a better understanding of what's needed to take great bird images consistently.
Let me know in the comments what you think. Have I missed a crucial tip?

I'm still new to bird photography but this advice is so encouraging and eye opening. I chuckle thinking back at the days I've wasted hoping for a serendipitous moment when planning and approach were fundamental. I also appreciate the point about creating opportunities for success early on. Thank you and I'll look forward to following the channel.

Another brilliant video, I agree with all of your points you make. We really have to learn how to be more patient and wait for the perfect shot. Talking of Heat Haze, living along the coast, there are times I feel excess air moisture also can prevent good focus. Often one can see the moisture moving in especially late afternoon. I never fail to gain some important thoughts from your videos!

Thanks Kirk, much appreciated! You are right, 100% humidity will have a similar effect. Snow can have it too.

Another great video Jan. A vlog on hard to ‘expose for birds’ would be great, eg black and white birds or Fairy-wrens ( seems that only early morning or late arvo shots seem to work on these as their feathers as super reflective). I usually don’t shoot between 10.30 and 4.30, mostly because of the poor light conditions, unless overcast but hadn’t considered heat haze.
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Interesting idea, I will put it on my list. Yes, reflective feathers can be a big issue and you either have to work on them during editing or shoot on cloudy days

Great tips. Thanks I'm on an embankment a lot, so getting at eye level is tricky or impossible. Lot of alligators, so going down to the bank is not advised. quite often. However, two things I've found. A steep overhead can be interesting in its own right, but you definitely need to apply your tip regarding thinking it through. Also, I found adding some distance to the bird can give the appearance of being more at eye level. Just a couple of my thoughts.
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brett, very good points and exactly what I am talking about. When you think it through new possibilities open up. You mention an important point, distance and longer focal length definitely lessen the perceived angle. That's a very good tip for everyone. I should've mentioned that! I sometimes put on a 2x extender and walk way back to lessen a steep angle.

Another great video Jan =) Would you please do a video of you using your setup to photograph waterfowl on the water. i'm curious how to get so low to the ground with that setup and also how you can photograph more comfortably. I always find it a tremendous strain on my neck while using the OVF/EVF

Tip no 6: ALWAYS review your photos, think of what you could make better, read about birds you just photographed, categorise them, choose a few best photos, process them and send to your friends - just one two really good photos; add some description; your friends will be impressed and they will motivate you; Tip no 7: watch this channel as Jan is really a pro 😀

Great video and tips Jan! How do you manage to attract with a setup perch, do you just look for where the birds usually hang out and put out some food around your perch and wait? =)
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
Bit of everything really. Food & water usually taker a while to work. So sometimes you can find spots the birds visit all the time and set up there or bird calls can be helpful at times as well, when you with care
@AndyGustavsson
@AndyGustavsson 3 жыл бұрын
@@jan_wegener sounds about like I thought, I usually setup a feeding station in the woods during winter but takes a few weeks for it to be "fed in" but once it is, there are no problems photographing birds. Will have to try out a portable setup while the migrating birds are here! So basically, go where the birds are and try setting up a perch and hope for the best? 😂👌
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndyGustavsson A water dish in a good spot can certainly work well and also work within days, or bird calls for instant action, but it's very hit and miss. We do have to somehow attract the bird to the perch, or you might look at an empty perch forever :D

Hey Craig, Sorry about the confusion. If you are in Australia, I have to add 10% GST. The price is 99USD. So it might change to a different number if you are in a different country, based on your currency. Send me an email if you have any more questions and we can work it out. aviscapes.com/contact/
