BIG TIP FOR COLD WEATHER: I recently solved this problem for myself by looking at the amount of glycerin in my products. I was conditioning like crazy and found my hair looking shiny, but feeling dry... after much trial and error I realized that I was using a lot of glycerin products in a house with a wood stove. The air is so dry that all the moisture from my hair was going into the air, and the glycerin was facilitating this process. Cutting back on glycerin has made a big difference for me in the past week or so.

@@jennyrose9454 It’s so true! I have so many products with glycerin that make my hair look amazing. My stylist had used some R+Co products on me this fall and I had the best hair ever…and it lasted a full 5 days (which is unheard of for me). I stocked up on Black Friday because they’re so expensive, and when I went to use them they just weren’t doing it! Figured out it was because of glycerin! Looks like I’m waiting for spring in New England to get to use them 😩

Yep, no glycerin for me. Too dry in winter and too variable dew points at other times of the year. Courtney’s favs tend to have lots of glycerin, so I can’t use most of her recommendations. But her technics and overall knowledge are very helpful.

Love tip #2! I feel like nobody talks about sleeping in the cast, but that is definitely what works best for me. I typically wash my hair after work, so around 4 pm. It's completely dry by the time I go to bed. (I usually do a combo of air drying and a quick few minutes of diffusing at some point.) I put it up in a high ponytail, sleep on a satin pillowcase, then SOTC in the morning.

I wear a satin bonnet on wash day while my hair is in the cast, that way it doesn't get wonky even if its a tiny bit damp. But i also like to wash right after work before supper, so it has HOURS AND HOURS to finish drying lol

Solved all my curly hair problems by admitting it wasn't really curly. Cut it in a diy bob, a little flat iron and I have a perfect do that lasts for days. Sometimes it feels good just to surrender to what Nature provided and work with that. But you curlies and wavies keep on scrunching!

@@jennyrose9454 yeah part of my hair is 2A and I don't bother trying to force it to be curly. I just let those bits do what they want. I've been meaning to play with flexi rods on those parts but I've been lazy.

I have fine 2a hair and what helped me to not get stretched waves was removing conditioner from my routine. After shampooing I go straight with leave in on wet hair and then comb it. I'm close to 2 years being in cgm. If you're hair is in transition then I probably wouldn't advise this because your hair needs good hair care.

It works best for me too. Sometimes I condition first, then shampoo. My hair does better if I can feel my actual hairs vs turning it into seaweed (if that makes sense, lol). I’ll either use a LIC, but wash most of it out, or apply a light curl cream like Re:Coil.

Great tips. I recently started doing gel, squish out a bit of the water, and then add a little more gel before plop. I just gave up trying for second day results. If it stretches out it stretches out. If I wake up with great or straight hair on day two I just go with whatever it wants. We all have our own little world up there.

Thank you for all your work on our behalf! I have exactly the same hair; wavy/curly, fine, low porosity and heavy. Like you I have a lot of it. Even though I'm 56, I still have a ton of hair and need a lot of layers or it kind of falls flat while simultaneously being overly puffy, lol. I have found that if I never actually scrunch out the crunch, the cast eventually falls out on it's own but my curls remain. I do have to be careful how I sleep or I will lose them faster, but other than that and pouring rain, they'll stay in for 3 or 4 days. Thanks again 🥰❤️➰➿〰️

Courtney, great video. Had to pause in the middle to type this: my hair would literally laugh at your tip #2 and #3 if it could laugh. Sleeping in the cast is the fastest way for my waves to lose the crunchiness and flatten out all over my head (this is why with shorter hair I've given up on curly hair care with the exception of sulfate-free/silicone-free shampoo and conditioner). Now, this might be because you have fine hair and I have quite coarse hair (only about 10 of my hairs will fit in 1 mm), but I find that it is almost impossible for me to overmoisturize my hair. What I really have to watch out for and not overuse is protein.

I always layer hold products, sometimes 2 gels, or a gel & foam, or gel, foam, gel... And what I find works the very best is to use products that have different holding ingredients, and I also get the best results if there's protein in one of them.

Thanks Courtney! This was a problem for me for a while, until I started using hairspray (so thanks for mentioning it in your list). Have you tried JessiCurl’s hairspray? It has been a GODSEND for me. My waves ACTUALLY spring up when I use it after SOTC. And it’s the reason I can go 3-4 days between washes. Also, the reason your hair is heavy is that you have a lot of it (it’s high density, no?) My curl pattern is similar to yours but I use about half the amount of product you do because I just have less hair (it’s very low density / I don’t have a lot of hair). Just a thought. Keep being your amazing self! I love it.

Your videos are always great! Is love feedback on avoiding brushing/combing. I've been trying to get through transition for two years now, and my waves can never Mack it to day two. No mater how I do my hair for sleep, It just looks stringy and tangled when I wake up. So I comb it out, then by day 3 it's mostly straight because I have to comb it multiple times on day two due to tangles. My hair also hates products with hold. They all dry it out even when they should be moisturizing, and protein just makes it frizzy.

Orange Marmalade from Ecoslay made all the difference for me! I had ringlets for days for the first time. If I do have to refresh any straighter pieces on 2nd, 3rd, 4th day hair then I literally just wet my hand a little and run it over the piece and scrunch and it reactivates like magic! So easy! And I really barely put in any leave-in a wash day and it still makes my hair feel so soft and smooth until the next wash day. I got this recommendation from one of your videos and it has been a total game changer for my hair and majorly simplified my routine. I have low-density fine wavy hair so it always stretched out SO easily and seemed like way too much trouble to maintain until I started using Orange Marmalade. Just sharing in case it helps someone else as much as it helps me. Thank you!

I stopped conditioning my hair after shampooing and it has been the ultimate game changer for my curls. My hair loves protein and I think currently my issue is a lifetime of using moisturizing products. I mix in a deep conditioning mask once or twice a month when styling my hair straight to make sure I do have some moisture in my routine. The hairspray hack also boosted my curl days from 12 hours to three days!! I liked the gel and mousse idea you mentioned so I will try that. 😊 Mousse worked great when I styled my hair straight but I find it weighs my hair down or gives me stringy curls when I use for wavy hair styling....but I feel it's my user error lol

I wash & style at night and sleep in the cast every time. But I never ever do the pineapple thing because that is guaranteed to stretch the curl out of my roots, no matter how loose. I use a satin scarf and sorta tie it in a way that ends o like a custom bonnet. I flip forward, and at this point the scarf is in almost a cone shape, and stuff my curls in so that they're piled up, accordion style as if I were plopping them almost, and I stand back upright as I'm making sure they're sitting in there correctly. The whole thing takes about 60 seconds to arrange. I do this before bed every night & it keeps my curls super springy!

I have found that using a hairspray after it’s been diffused to 95% dry helps keep it from stretching while it finishes air drying. Sometimes I’ll even add a little hairspray back in after I’ve scrunched out the crunch too. As far as cast blasting, I’ve found that layering a gel with the Cake beauty curl whip mousse gives me the best hold and longevity. My favorite is Innersense gel with this mousse. It’s a magical combination!

Your hair is healthy and that sort of slippery hair if that makes sense, so I can imagine you have more trouble than me in lasting curls/waves. I do the pineapple and it stays for about four or five days before frizz tends to be a problem and I have to redo. I do three or four finger coils strategically placed for fullness and the rest I scrunch and when I got out the shower today and looked at my wet hair where I did the finger coils it was coiling on its own. I was shocked but happy! Great channel. What do you consider your hair on the chart? 2a or maybe 2b? Every chart I look at is different.

Hi Courtney, this is exactly what I said this morning after a spend I very long time styling and drying my hair yesterday. I’m a month into the curly girl method and I’m trying to get the sides and front of my hair to curl again. I have fine, wavy hair like a baby!! Winter is a problem, I live in Boston and my hair hates the cold weather. As soon as I walk out the door, my hair immediately falls flat on the sides and top 😫. I don’t think there is glycerine in the products I use. It’s very frustrating.

any tips for avoiding heat damage from diffusing if you're someone who needs to wash your hair often? I'm a competitive swimmer and need to clarify my hair whenever it's in chlorine which is just about every day. for that matter how do you avoid damage from clarifying your hair every day? I know the damage from the chlorine would be worse, but this just seems like a lesser of evils situation lol

SOTC w oil…will make the curls last longer?! 🤯 This is def counter intuitive. I don’t SOTC at all…I’m trying to keep the crunch as long as possible 😂 Just wondering, which hair oils you recommend? I’ve seen a lot of KZfaqrs recommend Curl Smith Bonding Oil, Bread Oil, Melanin Oil…but honestly, too much product just feels heavy and gross on my hair…what is that balance of light enough oil, that will help w curl longevity? 🤔 Thanks for your great content, Courtney 😊

I love the Morrocanoil Treatment Light for this exact thing. It's rich and silky, but super lightweight & a tiny bit goes a long way.

What’s a good hair moose to use if I wanted to do the layering of products?? My hair was doing great about a year ago but then I started heat curling once/twice a week and it just killed my hair again…🤦🏼‍♀️ So, now i’m struggling with getting my curl pattern back as well as stringy and frizzy wash days. But thanks to you Courtney I’ve been learning a lot more than I did a year ago and I have hope that I can regain my natural curl again! I just need a LOT of patience! 😁

I tried several curly specialists before finding the right person. Yelp can be useful with curly hair in the filters. You have to really read the reviews though.

Does anyone have issues with products making their hair stringy? If I add a leave in conditioner and then brush my hair and then don't touch it til air dry my hair is in ringlets but a little frizzy. If I add a gel, mouse or curl cream it is stringy and icky feeling. I can diffuse and it looks good til I break the cast on dry hair and it gets really stringy and feels yucky.

I love the idea of sleeping in the cast but wear a CPAP at night. I haven’t found any tips on how to protect wavy hair with a full CPAP mask. Have you?

My new found curls might last the first day, but I can't get them through a night. I wear a CPAP, and an eye mask to protect my eyes from the CPAP. I've got straps everywhere over and around my head. Anything that might protect my hair doesn't work with my machine. My hair, which was strictly type 1 until my hormones started getting shifty on me, is all too ready to forget the beautiful curls my sister's stylist sweet talked it in to. 2 nights - all I've got left is frizz.

Those Cpaps are murder on hair & skincare routines for sure. I had to switch to a dental appliance after struggling with cpap & bipap machines plus every style mask they made for 2 long years. I couldn't keep it on for the mandatory 6 hours a night. It always leaked, it hurt my face, left permanent marks & pulled up skin & hair. My husband uses one for extreme sleep apnea & the noise from his drives me crazy some nights lol. The dental appliance is much more comfortable, quiet & convenient to use. I can tell a difference when I don't use it. If your hair is on the shorter side, you could try good ole fashioned pin curls or small buns strategically placed to avoid the straps. It might help cut down on the frizz & give you a natural "set" at the same time that you can brush out or finger fluff in the morning. I slept in braids or ponytails when I had mine but my hair was very long & I was just trying to keep it out of the velcro. If you have a regular hairdresser, definitely ask them for advice. Good luck ❤

@elizabethcampbell2459

Try little jaw clips to put sections of hair up towards the top of your head. You can work around straps this way. If your hair is long enough, you can probably get the clips up high enough so they don’t dig in to your scalp.

Courtney, I am sure it is not your struggle, but I would LOOOOVE to be pointed in the direction of a wavy/curly night routine for people who have to wear a CPAP at night. Satin bonnets seem to make everything slide loose. Does anyone have tips to help my waves/curls overnight?
@curlycurlbirdygirl

You could try using a silk or satin scarf and wrap your hair in it (Courtney has a video on that) since that may be more stable. Or you could use a buff.
@elizabethcampbell2459
@elizabethcampbell2459 2 жыл бұрын
As if there already aren’t enough problems with the curly girl method! I suggest little jaw clips and pull sections of the hair up around your head in a sort of modified pineapple. Depending on your hair length, you can get the clips up high enough, so they don’t dig in while sleeping.

Fellow CPAP user here and I'd love tips too! The best thing I've tried so far is Courtney's method of wrapping a silk scarf (I've been using a satin one though because that's what I could get more quickly): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5mIp86fqNaXho0.html Since the hair is on top of my head, my headgear fits over it pretty easily. I did have to loosen the top strap just a smidge but that's the only adjustment I needed to make. I use a Resmed AirTouch F20 full face mask, if that helps. My only complaint is that it's so hard to keep the scarf on. Sometimes it slips off several times and I just give up and put my hair in a loose ponytail on top of my head but that is not great for maintaining my waves lol.

I did not realise that my hair not being 100% dry was causing my longevity issue. My hair seems to take 10 hours to dry and I get impatient. Thank you for the tip
@SwavyCurlyCourtney

Totally get it! I just wait more for it to dry 100% for breaking the cast. I rarely get it to diffuse 100%. And the lighter the product or less you use can speed up dry time but... may effect hold depending on your hair and product!

Soooo I just started the CGM three days ago, and I'm just wondering... My hair dries pretty wavy (after scrunching, and using some products), but after a couple of hours (of me not touching my hair), it straightens out. Could this mean that I'm not naturally wavy? That it was just the products that helped, but then it "wears off"? or could this be a newbie sort of thing? Has anyone else experienced this, and still got lasting waves/curls after a period of time?
@marinajulianna0826
@marinajulianna0826 2 жыл бұрын
I think it could be a few things: transition phase, products, or your technique/application. I just started the CGM 2 months ago, and the first few washes were terrible, my hair was super frizzy and my waves became somewhat straight when completely dried. Through time and tons of trial and error with application and different products, my waves came out more. They aren’t perfect all the time, but I have faith that my waves will persist if I continue to find what works for my hair. For reference I have un-dyed, unprocessed, long (below chest) one length hair, 2a/2b waves, low porosity, medium density, and medium to coarse width hair.

@@marinajulianna0826 thanks so much for your reply! Your hair type sounds pretty much like mine! I’ll just have to stick it out and experiment! 👌 I was just thinking that it’s no use in doing all of these steps if I’m gonna find out my hair isn’t actually wavy at all! 😅 but I feel like, as you said, I just need to try some more! Different techniques, different products, and so on! 👌
