I was stuck in survival mode most of my life. Besides it taking a toll on my health, relationships, and quality of life, it totally robbed me of the presence, joy, and contentment available to me exactly where I was. Turns out I was actually engaging in some really toxic behaviors that KEPT me stuck in fight or flight. Quitting these allowed me to heal my nervous system and find true rest.

Definitely the rushing, but also I interpreted it as just a lack of presence, which I definitely had with my kids quite a bit. Which was mostly due to depression. I wonder if you have anything to say to how that effects things?

Hurrying! Especially with young kids. I love going at their speed. You see a lot of bugs that way. And multitasking will really drive you crazy. Especially if combined with social media. Or any 10 things you're doing on the computer. It becomes a challenge to see how many things you can do at the same time. Till your brain starts wanting quiet. Oh, and I gave up yoga 10 years ago, because everybody started doing vinyassa, flow or whatever. The tradition of holding yourself in a pose wasn't done anymore. For what reason? Fitness by moving? The other day I started again. I see many teachers are going back to slow, static, hatha yoga. So maybe the whole rushing thing is over. Mindfulness is back. Thanks for your video.

As someone much older than you, girl, this is such an important message. In my 30s with young kids, did all the toxic stuff and called it productivity. My kids are now in their late teens and I regret my 30s completely because I was so busy being “super mom”…I don’t remember that decade at all. Moms, nothing is more important than being fully present for our kids. It was until my kids provided me with “feedback” that was pretty hard to hear. This is such great advice, thank you. ❤

Got off social media a couple months ago. Deleted my accounts so I couldn’t go back. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year and my focus has improved so much after giving up social media. The longer I’m away from it, the weirder it seems to share so much of our lives online. It’s enriched my friendships and I haven’t found a negative.

Decluttering has been crucial for me. I used to fill every nook and cranny of our home with decor because I thought that was what I was supposed to do. Now that I have decluttered, I appreciate the empty spaces and it has given me room to breathe. Plus, cleaning is a lot easier when you have less to manage. You hit the social media thing right on the mark. In Johann Hari's Stolen Focus, he researches when our attention span started decreasing and found that it wasn't when phones came around, but when information started becoming so wide spread, not even computers, like newspaper, cars that gave you faster access to books, libraries etc. Even the invention and use of the lightbulb that allowed us to consume information through all hours of the night allowed us to consume information without processing it. It's not specifically technology or its contents that harms us (although it is that in part), it's the amount of information we're consuming.

I am 54, lost my husband 5 months ago, he was my main companionship, my friend and the dad of my 11 year old son. My life was guided by not having any "pending" in life, waiting for everything to be perfect, then I could rest and be "happy". Not anymore, I am learning to relax and let it be for what it is. I am taking care and tending for everything that need my attention but also telling myself that nothing is that urgent. Take care everyone and stay present. Good video!

Yep! Not rushing around allowed me to be present. I didn’t even realize I wasn’t present until I would have to keep rechecking things (did I lock the door, did I turn off the lights, etc). In the past, rushing around/packing my days/multitasking is what made me have to temporarily stop running my business. I also learned that rushing was a form of avoiding/running away from some internal feelings. Great video, thank you! ❤

Social media, mindlessly scrolling, spending too much time on the phone (really wasting valuable time!) is my biggest problem right now. I know it has to change, and I will work out a good effective way to change it. Keeping my habits won't be good for my (physical and mental) health. I want to be a good role model and the best support I can be for my teenage daughter. If you can do it, I can also change! Thanks for inspiring me!

That really resonated with me too. I was able to finally escape a 9-year abusive relationship a little over a year ago. Even at about year 5 of that relationship I understood that my home (which I shared with the abuser) was my major source of stress. We ended up moving to a new home in a new area a little before we finally separated, and despite being in better circumstances and a nicer home, we had just brought all of that stress with us so that even the new home couldn't be as much of a source of peace as I'd hoped. I'd have panic attacks at the thought of going home to the point that I'd find myself finding reasons to stay gone from the house all day, sometimes even opting to sleep in my SUV in the driveway rather than go inside. I have since moved to a new home in a completely different area, thrown out anything that the abuser and I shared in previous houses, decluttered, painted, and restructured my days to make more time for slow living and self-care. And I can see that it's slowly working, because I no longer feel the need to stay gone all day. I'm no longer afraid of what I'll have to face once I enter my house. I look forward to sleeping in my bed and waking up and doing things at my own pace. It's such a nice feeling to finally have a home that feels like a source of peace rather than stress. I had almost forgotten what that felt like...

As a therapist, I spent a part of my career working with women who were in or were leaving abusive relationships and I honour your bravery!! @@margarethubbard1173 thank you. I'm enjoying finally being able to take things one day at a time. It's such a nice feeling to have the capacity to be spontaneous sometimes, but it's just as nice to decide to take an entire day to just relax, rest, and nourish myself well. I think so many of us take that kind of everyday freedom for granted. It's so underrated but so necessary!

I am 53, and have just implemented/began implementing all of these strategies into my life within the past three years. You are very wise to figure this out at a young age. Social media was the last one I implemented last month. I deleted FB (the only social media I had and used since 2009), and choose to get on FB, on my desktop computer, which is downstairs in the basement/family room. And like you, that’s not often. I am so much more at peace now. God is the only one able to handle knowing everything (omniscient) about everyone, at every time of the day and night, and be present (omnipresent) everywhere around the world. We are not created for that kind of pressure. I hope you reach many young ladies with this video. ❤️

I love the idea of being more intentional and I truly believe that clutter raises cortisol, at least it does for me. I also used to strive for productivity by being a multi tasker, only to realize that it feels so much better to do one thing at a time. There are also studies that REAL multi tasking is impossible, humans are unable to do more than one thing at a time actively, fully. e.g. typing and listening to someone: one of the two tasks suffers in quality when compared to doing those two tasks one after another. So while I was sure to be so much more efficient trying to do more than one thing at the same time, I was doing them with less quality and of course not at all mindfully, just speeding through the process. Needless to say I am now in burnout and depression and slowly recovering. Now I am so much more intentional with what I spend my time on and how I do things. It feels so much better.

FEEL YOU on the rushing and multitasking. I feel like I'm constantly looking for little chores to do while waiting on other things, 'that's how the house stays clean!' But actually it's just making my house stressful because everything is a to-do. The times when I only do one thing at a time are so peaceful, if my social-media stimulated brain can tolerate the boredom of it. These are all things I've heard but you articulated really well!!

Wow! When you said, “I don’t think that we were created to have access to all of this information all at once” it immediately made me think of the garden of Eden. Which tree were they not supposed to eat of? The knowledge of good and evil 🤯 that’s social media (the internet/technology in general)! And what was one of trees they could freely eat of? The tree of life! I can’t wait to get back to the garden (slow living) and start being present with God and my family and friends and just being in the moment! 🙌🙏💜

Wow your words are amazing here! It was like you were speaking directly to me and my life. As a 38-year old mom of 3 young kids, I am just now realizing I have a terrible habit of being addicted to being 'productive', multitasking, busy, hurry culture. Your video here is enlightening and going to be the start of my journey to peace and calmness!! Thank you so much!

This is such a good, straight to the point video. I feel like I intuitively already knew all of these, but sometimes we need to hear it from someone else before we allow ourselves to listen to that nagging feeling. Thank you😊

These are great tips. I’ve been doing all of these things for a few years now, always a work in progress and balancing act. I focus on what is overstimulating (how environment, food or lack of, my thoughts, feelings create overwhelm and becoming aware)

Restricting access to social media websites in my settings helps (I don’t have any social media apps on my phone). Social media feeds my need to compare, fix, do more, plan, overstimulation of information, thoughts and negative feelings

I need to hear this today… So much of my life I’ve pried myself on multitasking, multitasking, multitasking, and loading so much on my plate, but I would burn out. Crash, get up and do it all over again. I am busy helping my fiancé raise his three children 14, 12, and 10. That will also result in a custody battle due to their abusive neglectful narcissistic birthmother. While running a new cleaning 🧽 service business Also, running my little hobby farm, and egg 🥚 business.. it’s a lot, but I have systematically been cutting unnecessary things and people out of my life.. I needed to see this today… Thank you! 🙏🏻 💜💜💜☺️😌

All of this was so good. For so long, I operated with my nervous system in a complete frenzy. I’m guilty of all 5 with social media being the least, or rather the one I caught the earliest. I definitely still have random moments when I pop on and ingest entirely too much and then toss my phone with my mind feeling weighty from both helpful and totally unnecessary information. I have been avoiding the voice screaming at me to declutter my closet and drawers for some time now 😭 today was supposed to be the day buuut there’s no day like tomorrow 😂! I’ve learned that real change is multifaceted and requires making the daily choice of improvement. Thanks for the tips!

It's kinda good to see that there are so many people out there who struggle with the same feelings, but on the other hand it's also so alarming 🥲 We all need to be at ease more. And allow ourselves to take our time with things. It's easier said than done. It's so important to cherish your daily life! That makes up most of our days, so it's necessary to feel comfortable being with oneself and to care for one's own good. Very nice vlog, I'd love to see more of the positive selfcare!

So relatable! I’m naturally overachiever too, this has burned me out twice. I have simplified my life a lot since then, but even now still working on this, I remind myself constantly to more gentle with myself, to live slowly and to be more present, etc. I guess it’s an ongoing process. ❤ But it’s very, very freeing and rewarding once we manage to create a slow life. 🥰🙌🏻

It took me a long time to realize that I power walked everwhere 😅 I didnt realize how much energy I was kind of just wasting to save a few minutes. I was too focused on my internal world, and did not take enough time to notice and to appreciate my present, physical world, and I know that I am able to see and process so much more if I just take some time. Thank you for this video

Just subbed 🤍! I took the time to watch this video in its entirety and I must say it truly was cultivating and well worth the watch . Everything you shared related , closely as I need improvement in these areas as well. Love the tips! Have been using some of the tips shared only partially but realized it’s time to stop being lukewarm and give it priority. I love how you mentioned , you work towards these habits each day. It certainly isn’t habits that stick overnight but through daily practice until they stick. Thanks for sharing ✨😊!

Can relate to every single habits. The most I dish them out of my life the better I feel.
