Hope this video helped you a bunch with getting your bass more PHAT (with a P)! If you are wanting to get a systematic approach to how to produce professional quality from start to finish - you need to watch my Production RoadMap Workshop - it's totally free and we've had thousands of producers go through it and find a huge amount of value from it! Nathan this a great video! I do a lot of synth work for fun adding to my friends' projects and bands from rock to singer-songwriter to hip hop. Most videos are EDM/Trap specific so I love that you cover the difference in production techniques you use for different genres. I think producing and synths will always be just a hobby for me but I enjoy getting to learn new things that help me add to my friends' visions and bring them to life. Thank you so much!

Another thing I do when copying a take and using it as two separate takes for the "spread" is not only separating the timing by a few milliseconds but also put a pitch shifter in the copied clip and pitch down about 25 cents.

This is a bit off topic but for any Logic users out there like me who like to use a compressor to duck their vocal delays and reverbs with the Dry lead vocal signal, that new update to waves studiorack let's you internally duck the output of studiorack with the track input signal with ANY vst you own now. You don't need create a ghost sidechain track anymore. Great tips on bass by the way! My fav bass enhancers are Decapitator and denise audio Bass XL. Also that free studiorack update lets you create a multiband Decapitator...

Hi Hi Nathan. Cool video. I was looking for it, finally found it again. Long search. Anyway can u pls tell me what the low and high cuts are of the 2 upper bass tracks with the agressive brass on top? I wish u could have shown the eq. Lows tend to cause lots of muddiness if not applied properly.

Hi! I would love a video about recording bass and getting the right sound through amps! I know a lot of people just uses a line box and then have a plugin for amp but I would like to see a tutorial for actually recording it through a microphone:) great vid

Honestly I never record bass with a mic. Just don't have any need to with how good amp sims are.
@jsnell126
@jsnell126 Жыл бұрын
Split your signal so you have a DI and an Amp. You can mic your amp with any type of mic - use your ears to find a sweet spot on the speaker cone. Use the DI signal for 150 hz and below - compress it. Use the mic'd amp signal for the midrange. High end can be a blend of the 2 signals or whichever sounds better. Options are limitless in mixing with effects/panning/EQ/comp etc.

Great topic. Can you tell me what you reached for or changed in the first tip where you added a bit of sine wave in the 50hz range? I totally get the technique and understand various ways this can be done but It was a bit tough to follow cause i did not understand what the source material was to begin with to grasp what was done to achieve it. Thank you :]

Hey Nathan great video as always man. Are you using a gimbal that's tracking you on your second camera? Maybe the sensitivity is a little too high, the movements are are a little distracting actually

Dear Nathan, thanks for the very good tricks. But if you let us hear the difference between 2 basses centered and 4 basses panned left and right, then make sure you do pan them left and right, not 3 left and one right (or was it 3 right and one left) ...

For the #3 tip, I'd probably used a bit of side EQ to tame the low end on the synth bass on the sides, or actually just pan them less aggressively!

I was under the impression that low frequencies should be kept in the center of the mix. Can you explain your reasoning for widening your entire bass spectrum and not just the mid and high frequencies?
@NathanJamesLarsen
@NathanJamesLarsen Жыл бұрын
Correct - but keep in mind that I'm pairing in two's - so the bass is not panned in a way that feels off balance. It's always panning two so there is an equal distribution. It DOES sound different - very different flavor, but it's not wrong to have doubles and pan. This was a technique I learned from the producer I worked with years ago - and I have used it a ton - very powerful tool to get that ultra wide bass sound
@5thWatcher

Aren't you supposed to like never use stereo imaging effects on basses because it will typically cause phasing?
@NathanJamesLarsen
@NathanJamesLarsen Жыл бұрын
Nah - phasing is when two signals compete with each other - it's very noticeable when it happens - using stereo widening is very common

Reverb on a bass.... Can someone please tell how's that possible, I always shy away from doing that
@NathanJamesLarsen

Yeah not something I do much. Part of why it works is because there is plenty of space between notes for it in this example

Well, for the rock track I would disagree. Layering is no problem at all, especially if you have an aggressive distorted bass. No distortion for lows and subs and pretty high distortion for mids and highs. But not panning, keep it in the centre. And guitar! Yep, guitar should be panned left and right, maybe even quadro))

So this video completely ruined my world. I’ve been producing my own hip-hop songs and mixing for three years now and the whole time I thought all bass had to be mono right down the center.
@NathanJamesLarsen
@NathanJamesLarsen Жыл бұрын
Like I said - in most cases, it will be mono but it's just that 25% of the time I double it up. For Hip Hop i would say that the double tracking concept isn't as common. Don't do that with 808s.

Awesome thank you for the advice!! I really love your videos and love the emphasis on music plugins rather than processing plugins. I upgraded to the 600$ version of komplete13 about a a year ago and it was the best upgrade I’ve done. Now I plan to do the ultimate in the future. Looking forward to the symphony

@@NathanJamesLarsen What is common is making the harmonics of the bass above the sub layer stereo. what youre doing is not. stereo imaging does no good on sub frequencies. Stereo imaging below around 100hz functions the same as interference, and the human ear cant distinguish the direction of a sub frequency. Think about why people like bass - it feels like its all around you, no matter where its coming from.
