After sharing some tropes I'm not too keen on, here's the flipside: five tropes I love and want to see more of.
Almost every story contains a trope or two (or five, or ten), but not all tropes stand on equal ground. Many are tired or cliche, whereas others still excite a lot of readers, and others might be so common or subtle readers might not notice they're a trope at all.
Here are five tropes I love reading about. What are your favourite tropes?

I lived an experience that was the first, second, and fifth tropes. I had never fallen in love so hard in my life, and for the most unexpected reason. I could not stop thinking about her. The effect was torture. This was a story I should have never been a part of, but it's over now. She moved away and I want to get out of this town so badly I can't stand it. I wish I was more of a writer. Some day I want to collaborate on this story with a better writer. It has a great ending, but may need some license applied to the sequence of events. Any ideas on how to find a writer to collaborate on a story?

A pessimist / cynic is just a disappointed / jaded optimist. I can easily understand a cynic being friends with an optimist, it reminds the cynic of that lost optimist within them. From the other direction, I could see an optimist being capable of seeing the lost inner optimist inside of the cynic, trying to nurse that aspect of the other person back to health.

My favourite tropes: - zero to hero trope: I don't need to explain that one I guess. - revenge trope (it's kinda similar to the 1st one): I was a bullied kid, it soothes my little victim heart 😂 - "alien" group: not sure how to explain that one but it's probably the same as the weird small town, just not necessarily a town. Maybe people from the same family, the same religion, whatever.. and they are humans of course, but their traditions, their mindset are a bit quirky, or totally out of the world. I think it can be used to show the flaws of the main group ("normal" one), or sometimes both groups. I like to see people face a character with an unexpected insight on things. - The not-so-secret secret: I like when as a reader I know the truth, but the characters don't, and I'm losing my cool watching them walk by important clues... But it's still super satisfying when they find out. - the kind villain: a cliché, I know. But a kind character, who turns out to be the villain, even if it was predictable, I just love it.

My favorite weird trope that doesnt come up much is 2 beings, 1 body. It's such a fun trope because it allows to characters who are directly opposed to interact frequently without removing either from the story while forceing then to cooperate on some level.

I don't really like fake dating. It's not about the trope itself, I guess I just don't like the dishonesty of it... especially when it's because of family I just feel like the character should be able to tell his family they aren't dating anyone and they should accept that. And when that's not the case, which for fake dating it probably isn't, that just makes the character and their family unlikable to me.
@xtonibx5770

I love fake dating when it blossoms into a real romance, but I completely understand this comment. I agree with your reasoning. Usually with fake dating you tend to not like the family if they're *pressuring* the person to be with somebody. Not everybody has someone, and it's okay.

Yeah, dishonesty is not my piece of cake either, but depending on the situation I find it to be excusable. Like undercover, when everyone percives you as a couple anyway and you Cover something up, like when you fake date your gay best friend so no one will find out and lie as little as possible doing so. Marriage for practicality, to make a case they can keep there children or adopt when they could not without you marrying . . . If they would have to leave the country

Found Family is one for me. Antihero and complicated people or friendships also is a favorite of mine. I've been toying with a long term fake dating story that evolves into a different kind of love story over time. Sort of like When Harry Met Sally but with a more complicated dynamic because in the beginning these two really don't like each other. They only fake dated because they were each other's only viable solution.

Serena Odonata I 100% agree. I don’t personally have any disabilities or anything like that, but I often do get misrepresented. I’m an Egyptian immigrant and I got/get asked some of the dumbest questions. It gets really annoying and I always feel so alone and left out. I wish there were more accurate representations of the Egyptian/Middle Eastern/Arabic culture.

Despite the fact that I've used all 5 of them in my current WIP (Ahem!), I did not set out to use any of them. They just sort of appeared organically along with the story appearing to me (Pantser-not apologizing for that 😇). But now I have them. The questions I need to ask myself are 'Did I employ them well?' and 'If not, how can I employ them better?' I do have a problem with the term 'trope'. If you actually look it up, the definitions in most dictionaries, even when referring to literature, describe something completely different than how the word is being used here, even if this might be a common usage. Also, it's an emotionally over-heightened word bc far too many people think of it as a 'bad' or negative concept, and liken it to a cliché (which is of course more dependent on how you express something than whether it has a similarity to other things). Often, the tendency toward cliché (which is based on how skilled a writer may or may not be) within a particular trope is the exact reason why some tropes are not well-loved-it often has very little to do with the trope itself. It also is easily confused with conventions. All stories, and all genres, have conventions, which are the commonly identifiable things that the reader expects and wants fulfilled by the story (can't have a murder mystery without a body, can't have a courtship love story without a 'lover's meet' scene). And what are sometimes referred to as 'obligatory moments' is the prime method for authors to serve those expectations in scene. So the term 'trope' could not be a more fuzzy or misunderstood term, and does not serve to categorize things in a way all people understand to be the same (which is ironic seeing how the concept of identifying something as 'belonging' to a trope is the very act of categorizing or pigeonholing things simply based on their similarity to each other). I prefer the term 'motif', which is a much more benign, innocent, clearly defined, and easily understood concept.

I like a good anti-hero too. I wouldn't have to work very hard to qualify as one myself. The Movie "Unforgiven" has some good anti-heroes. When they set out to make a killing to get a bounty they are more pathetic than scary. There aren't any heroes in this movie. Almost everyone is an anti-hero. The Schofield Kid is such a strident anti-hero that he is painful to watch. He is still a good character because he is so apt, and because he helps move the plot along.

I. A cloud no bigger than a man's hand: a tiny disturbance, barely noticed at the start of a story, that grows in menace & engulfs the whole narrative. (Stephen King's The Mist.) 2. Naive innocent teams up with world weary traveller: always a powerfully touching combination. (Frodo & Gandalf. Holmes & Watson. George & Lennie - Of Mice & Men. 3. The unseen antagonist: the reader's imagination invests him/her/it with immense powers that a denouement or accurate description deflates. (The Hound of the Baskervilles was a powerful supernatural terror until it was revealed (spoiler!) as a large dog covered in phosphorous.) 4. The redemptive act: a cruel antagonist engages in a final act of selflessness. (Blatty in Blade Runner.) 5. Unrequited love that stays true to its source. (A Tale of Two Cities. Brideshead Revisited.)

I'm a big fan of weird small towns, too. Have you ever watched Banshee? I happen to be hashing out a concept for a weird small town, actually. That one I'm sort of pairing off with the misunderstood menace trope: where the thing that is thought to be the cause of the trouble actually isn't. It may even be what is trying to stop the real problem, but as it is unpleasant it gets misunderstood. Does that make sense?

pity you didn't have any recommendations because i haven't read anything in the categories you mentioned. i have seen a couple of fake dating movies (the holidate, how to lose a guy in ten days.) and have read a couple of historical romances that involved fake dating(courting?) my favorite anti villain/hero is probably always going to be Megamind... also not a book...that i am aware of.. but in literature form? The MC from the Skystone.... love him to pieces... he often walked a fine line between right and wrong and "it's not morally or legally right, but it's justified revenge and they had it coming..." i just can't think of any other characters like that except maybe Harry Dresden? can't think of any funny best friends. but my sense of humor is skewed and abnormal. what i find funny is not at all mainstream. mostly when people try to write funny characters i find them intensely annoying instead. weird small towns? nope. can't think of any.... stephen king maybe? he always has his stories set in some small town in Maine. i guess he never got out much? everything else i've read is pretty much set in big cities, past or present. otherwise the town took a complete backseat. Erie Indiana? also not books... but it's a weird small town!

I love anti-villains and anti-heroes too! Though I'm much more into anti-villains, between the two. I find morally questionable characters interesting, especially when they have their own personal code of ethics. Even a straight up villain can have their limits. Like a character of mine who is an assassin because he loves murdering people, but he won't hurt kids, and he prefers not to kill women unless they're horrible people. He's friends with another character whose status I'm not sure of... he's either a villain or an anti-villain. He certainly thinks of himself as doing the right thing, but he's ultimately just a serial killer with an unusual M.O. (He, too, won't kill kids. His standards for killing women are a bit lower than the other guy's standards but he still prefers to kill men. I am aware that these standards make them both highly unusual as serial killers go.)

I love the tropes of: romantic love not beeing the most importend . . . Like chosing a friend of family members over a potential lover Gray characters Found family Extreamly reluctant best friends/found family Friends getting percived as a couple/Fake Dating/ friends beeing comfortable enough with eachother to be Flirts without the whole emotional and hormonal bagadge of actualy beeing into eachother Complex relationships/layered relationships where thi gs are not clear cut, like Rivale starting to get fond of eachother and with that protective, endlessly at gods siblings that genuinly would die for eachother/ Romantic feelings building on something else, I like the forbidden love trope for it makes the romance potentionaly more complex than just they want to be togeather . . . I like IT there is conflict that does not stem from them beeing to stupid to get it on but them already having another typ of bond they do not want to risk, an older party feeling guilt over there developing feelings for the younger one, probably feeling responsable for them or obligation to some third party. Falling for your dead best friends girl, a student, a dead friends child, your best friend that sees you as family . . . For so e wierd reason I find guilt realy apealing. . .
