On the Ohio state list, any one of the Six Trios stand alone as a level A piece. We chose to record #5 first because we felt it was the most accessible of the set, and are looking forward to recording others from the set in the future.
Each of the works includes a programmatic title. For #5 the title is Mitternachtliche Wachtparade which translates to The Midnight Change of the Guard which is in the style of a Turkish March. And, as the title suggests the work begins softly with the new guard approaching from the distance, the volume grows and the work becomes more intricate for the changing of the guard, and then fades away as the old guard marches off.
The Turkish March begins and ends in the key of Bb, with a key change to Eb for a short section of the work. It is in 2/4 time throughout. The parts are challenging and interesting for all three players. Parts 1 and 2 have a full 3 octave range and the 3rd part range is 2 octaves and a 6th.
We highly recommend this work, it is a great reminder that Weissenborn composed a lot more than just etudes. This edition is by bassoonist Mark Rogers and is published by Southern Music Company.
