It always amazes me to see young ppl that are basically struggling spend thousands on a bag. I travelled the world, paid off the house and cars, set up the retirement money and then bought my first luxury bag. Now I have a number of bags, many brands and styles and my last purchase pretty much got me to where there is nothing out there I would like to buy. Those bags are also good quality and would last a lifetime. This was a good video, young ppl should collect experiences while young. Believe me, climbing the Hana waterfall in Hawaii in your twenties is a lot better than thinking about doing that in your forties or fifties!! Good luck everybody!!!

I’m good at procrastinating before purchasing handbags. In fact, I have procrastinated myself out of a bag. I always tell myself, “There will be something better that you want later.” 😊

The part about traveling is massive for me. I just dropped 3k on a 12 day beach holiday instead of buying the bag i really, really want. Experiences are more important to me, spending time with my family and watching my children enjoy new experiences & staying in nice places is priceless for me vs designer bags. I love luxury bags so much but my days are so routine. Experiences are something we all look forward 2 esp beach vacations bc we are definitely a beach family. My husband is from maimi and we were married on the beach. It's just the change of scenery for us that brings happiness.

During the lockdown, I ended up buying 15 designer bags due to boredom. Huge mistake! I now regret almost half of my purchases and I’ve been trying to get rid of them for months now. They were really not worth it. Wish I would’ve really thought it through.

Great video. Last week I was at LV and my SA offered me the Capucines in green with the snake top handle. Very beautiful bag, but instead of buying it, I just took pictures and left the store without buying anything. And then I thought about it at home, and said to myself: NO, I don’t need the Capucines, although it is a very beautyful bag.

I really like your honest and open words about shopping and purchasing in general. In the past I bought trend bags, because I liked them in the moment and I did this impulse shopping on bags. I'm redoing my handbag collection completely and sold 27 bags in the last 12 months. 3 are still to go. And I bought 4 new ones and that is the amount I want to keep and stop buying now. My last collection lasted me 8 years. Lets see how long this 4 bags will give me company 🙂

Great video! There’s definitely a dark side to buying and owning luxury. The shopping experience from start to finish can be addictive, and the satisfaction of owning a new bag only lasts so long before you start wanting another. This can be incredibly dangerous if you are prone to overspending like me. In my early twenties, I used 3/4 of my monthly salary to purchase a bag and spent the rest of the month eating instant noodles. Granted, I wore that bag to DEATH, but I sacrificed my quality of life for ONE item I barely use now. I love designer, but it takes months for me to make the decision to spend hundreds of pounds on one item now.

all big influencers are shopping addicts it isn't less of an addiction because they're being enabled addicts often get enabled actually and they're hoarding, which is proven by the huge 'declutters' despite claims to hate conspicuous consumption (literally their whole gig) it's still hoarding and the declutters prove it it's no less hoarding just because they have a lot of things outgoing, hoarding is a lot of things incoming on a constant basis

Thanks for another awesome video Steph! While different from your other videos, THIS ONE, hit home and was definitely what I needed to hear. You didn’t dissuade me from purchasing more luxury items, what you did was make me take a step back, think and ask myself, “do I really need this bag”? I have a few bags that I’ve purchased last year, that I haven’t even worn, and because a new collection is out, I’m ready to call my SA to pre-order another bag. One I probably won’t wear anytime soon. This video came right on time, right before the SS22 collection hit the shelves. I appreciate you going there with this video. A different perspective, and definitely an eye opener.

This video was quite timely for me. I had just made a pledge to myself that I wasn't going to buy any more bags or shoes etc until I went overseas in six months. I want to have enough spending money to buy a bag in Paris and enjoy the trip. But I was wavering this morning after watching another video and seeing something i liked and then finding there was a discount code. The sensible part of my brain tells me the excitement will wear off about five minutes after I buy the bag and when it turns up I will be lukewarm about the whole thing by then. But the addiction really is hard and I am having to be very conscious about what I am doing.

Thanks so much for sharing these realities! I recently made my first luxury bag purchase to celebrate some milestones, and soon after, I found myself researching and wanting another bag, when I hadn't intended to buy more at all. A few things that I find helpful in deterring new purchases is 1) negative reviews (made me realize there is no perfect bag in terms of style and functionality), 2) seeing how brands release new styles all the time, there will always be something new that catches my eye, but it's only novel for a while. There are also luxury bag and jewelry rental subscriptions services, which may be helpful to some who are more interested in trying stuff out than owning.

I love this video! I had a work trip to Vegas last week and went with full intention to buy a YSL bag, but they didn’t have the exact one I wanted. I bought a cardholder instead and left to think about it. Then, I realize I left my work tote at home, so I proceed to LV to buy an empreinte Neverfull. Thankfully, the line was way longer than I had time for, because I would have spent my budget on something I truly didn’t need or was even at the top of my wish list. Thank you for all your continued tips!!

Helllo Steph! I own 12 bags now, my own strategy is that i never allow myself to get 2 bags from the same color, also 10 of the 12 bags that I own are basic colors (black, denim, beige, LV monogram, white, grey... etc). I also have a strategy, one in one out, if i purchase one bag this means that another one has to go. I always keep 10 to 12 bags maximum. and I always always shop preloved. Also a good strategy is that each bag has its matching shoes, so i can wear all of my bags without telling myself "this doesnt match my outfit". However, i do get that guilty feeling whenever im spending thousands on a bag even though i have the money. When I buy, i take money from my savings (which is supposed to be for a house), and I do sometimes regret making a sacrifice for the sake of a bag.

I'm nowhere near buying luxury but did just spend 100 bucks on a bag for the first time. I've gotten a bit too obsessed with searching for deals on the particular "luxury to me" brands. Everything you said applies to various price points. Wise words. Procrastination was something I did start a few years ago. I fail sometimes and impulse buy, but I'm getting better at recognizing when I'm seeking a high and waiting. I suffer from depression so it's easy to attempt to shop away sorrows.

Thank you for the spreadsheet! I edited it a little bit. I change from USD to local currency, I added the year I bought the item and replaced the “cost per use” column with a “sold” column to keep track of the money and to remember the items i used to have and remind myself of why I sold them. Great video! I often find myself in a vicious circle of wanting new thing and not appreciating what I actually have. The spreadsheet also helps to highlight this.

You touched briefly on physiological effects. That is a big one for me. Big purchases, luxury handbags, home renovations, etc. tend to disrupt my sleep. I wake up in panic modes during the night. I have an emergency fund, I have retirement savings, but I do pay for luxury with reserves and financing as I believe it's a generation thing with me (Gen X - we're materialistic and we want it all now). This year, I reached the pinnacle of luxury. Hermes. Two (yes, two) vintage Kelly bags. One will be paid off w/ very little interest (and was under retail) in Oct. and the other one in Jan. I purchased them for 2 reasons. 1.) Investment - I plan to keep these bags for at least 10 years and then get my money plus some out of them. 2.) I'm a status flexer. I drive a Mercedes. I own luxury. I'm the Jones next door. I've been this way for over 30 years. Do I feel like I"m done now that I've reached the summit? No. But I have sold a lot of bags, shoes, etc. to help fund my purchases. And I don't feel the same hunger I felt before the Kelly bags. I've climbed to the top and acquired the most sought-after luxury there is. And when I look around me, I never see anyone in my town carrying Hermes. Never. I had never seen a Kelly bag in person before I bought mine. You hit on a lot of good points, but to really combat a luxury addiction, or any addiction, needs deeper work that could take a long time to get at the root of.

Thanks for sharing and being so open Nikiin. Yes this runs deep and it's important to keep ourselves in check. I try to 'compete' with myself to get the bags I dream of - I don't wear my most expensive ones so much because they scare me. Damaging them, getting them stolen, so realistically it's not always the best move, but I enjoy the process!

Awesome video. It’s so good to see a fellow handbag lover take a balanced view about their obsession. So many KZfaqrs just seem to be buying and buying, one bag after another, like there is no tomorrow. It’s so easy to get influenced and fall into that rabbit hole, which is just not sustainable in the long term. I also bought many bags during lockdown and now trying very hard to curate a long term timeless collection. Will always love handbags and will keep watching handbag videos, but I need to tell myself don’t need to buy a new one every season. Thank you for those great tips and reminders that there is always an opportunity cost with buying luxury goods.

I've always lived by this rule. Charge everything with a credit card that has cash back rewards. Always pay the bill off in full and let the cash bag rewards build up to a few thousand than put it in savings account. I've always worked hard because it always pays off. I've only allowed myself to have a mortgage and I currently own 2 places. One us paid off. I've always been an over achiever and reached every goal. Stick working on others. I've done a lot of traveling , I think I've been to 14 Countries. If I want something I save for it. Never take money put of the bank for it. Point us, don't spend $2 if you only have $1.99 Only allow yourself a mortgage or car payment. Just work hard for an easier future and award yourself along the way.

I went on a huge LV binge last year. Never had one before, but I got a big bonus at work and decided to spoil myself with a new Diane bag. I told myself this is it, I'm happy with just this bag, but it awakened some kind of monster in me. I wanted MORE. The bonus had been a one-off so I couldn't afford more at the time, but then my husband and I sold our old house at a healthy profit a few months later and after that I _could_ afford more. Uh oh... We both went a little wild with splurging- he bought the hard-to-find lego sets he's always wanted and a new gaming computer, and I bought 4 vintage LV bags and several wallets. We were riding high buying whatever we wanted, didn't have to worry about money anymore and life was great! Then it all came crashing down. His ex went off the deep end and we had to spend the last of the house money on lawyers and custody battles. Then our sweet kitty died very suddenly which not only emotionally destroyed me, but left us with a $1600 vet bill. My medical copays from a minor procedure all hit at once last month to the tune of almost $2k and I'm having to do payment plans to avoid collections. I'm budgeting down to the dollar to get us out of this hole, we will be okay, but all that money I spent on bags I barely even use anymore would reeeeeally be useful right now -__- I can't bring myself to sell them mainly b/c consignment takes out such a big bite and scammers are everywhere now, but man do I wish I could go back and just NOT buy most of the bags. I don't regret buying the rare LE pieces(I will be buried with my Catogram cardholder and multicolor murakami bag damnit) but I wish I'd just never gotten into luxury to begin with. It is as addictive as a drug. I'm not even fancy either, my every day style is season 2 Joyce Byers lol. I got no business wearing anything designer 😅

One thing that helps me is creating a separate savings vault for a certain item. This allows me the time to spare what I can and then, after I have saved up the money, I sit and evaluate whether I still want the item. If I do, I go ahead and get it, as the money saved up is specifically set aside for this item. If, at the time I have saved the money, I decide that I don’t want it, I move the money saved to a general savings account, rather then reallocate it to another item.

Wonderful video with so much honesty! I have a quick question that I’ve been wanting to ask… Where can you purchase Chanel sunglasses Preloved or at a discount? If you have any insight I would appreciate it and have a great day

Always saved for my bags. Any new ones ive purchased without saving ive purchased from selling a bag a dont use. I have wasted my money (sold at a loss) on some lv bags that we're practical. I have a neverful i never use but thought id use. I have 9 designer bag all lv/gucci/ysl and the one i use most is a mulberry pochette - its very small but so practical - also my cheapest bag. Great grab n go bag. Will never sell it
