Gary, In Force Quit you do not have to do a Shift+ Click to select multiple open apps. All I do is click on the first (top) open app drag dow to select them all then click on Force Quit.

Another thing. If an app is stuck it will show in the Dock context menu. "Application not responding" and the "Quit" button is replace with "Force Quit". The Killall command has been useful to me in the past when the Dock has shown a notification red bubble for , say, Mail when there is no new mail present. "Killall Dock" works there.

Also, while in an Application, if you press shift on the Apple Menu you can force quit the app you're in. (Works with the Finder too)

Thanks for another great tutorial. Question: you mention "quit gracefully" vs force quit. I do understand about work not being saved if an app is forced to quit, but. could you explain what is different about forcing an app to quit, what 'dangers' there are, if any.

Unsaved documents or data is the main concern. But in extreme cases it could make the whole system unstable until the next restart. Another rare danger is that the app was in the middle of updating its preferences (or library, cache, etc) and force quit will make the app unstable or unusable.

Hi Gary, love your videos. Is there any issue Force Quitting apps when they are running normally (other than losing unsaved work)? I have terrible screen hygiene and often do a CMD+OPT+ESC, just to clear things up. Maybe screen hygiene would be a good future video for you.

Yes. You should never force quit an app unless there is no other option. Besides not saving, you could potentially corrupt the preferences/data/cache/library of the app and make it unusable. Or, you could potentially make all of macOS unstable until a reboot. Only force quit if the regular quit won't work.

I haven't had to do a force quit in awhile. For me, it's usually a third party app that's the problem or a hung up script.

Thanks for tutorial! Sometimes it happens when some process like Docker takes all system resources and laptop freezes, is there any way how to kill it or tell macos kill it when out of resources?

All you can do is to use the keyboard shortcut to bring up the force quit window and wait. Sometimes after a minute macOS will do just what you suggest. Other times the window will appear and you can slowly take steps to forcing it to quit yourself. If this app causes the problem often, be sure to report that to the developer.

I find the screen shot app often stops working freezing the mac. Especially when I try to a an arrow for some reason. Normally I have to re start the mac. Just tried using the apple\force quit and the screen shot tool does not seem to be in that menu to stop.

I've never had that issue with screen shots. Check and double-check your "Options" when you take a screenshot. Make sure it is set to screenshot (not record) and see where it is saving to, etc.

Sometimes it asks if I want to send a report to Apple. Does anyone read such reports?

I don't think there is anyone there reading each as they come in. But I'm sure they go into a database and when engineers are working on an issue they can get some valuable data from that.
