It's hard to find anything new in builds that hasn't been done dozens of times, but I've never seen anyone embed magnets to prevent bits from rolling off a work surface before, and that's something that you can use in other situations too. Nice build overall, extra kudos for the magnet trick.

Yep. I find this super useful. This is on my list. I have a floor model drill press. It’s old and has some issues. I’ve been “storing” it for a friend for about 10 years now. I’ve wanted to switch to a small counter model like yours. Tomorrow my friend is bring me hers and this is what I plan to do. This may end up being my first cabinet build for the shop. I can already see how great it will be to get all my bits in one place. I laughed when you talked about having to get your box of bits out, open it and then go back to the drill. I only laugh because that’s pretty much what I do and I get annoyed. LOL. That plan bundle is looking better and better.

I love these add-ons and I am inspired to upgrade my drill press cabinet now, especially the table. I love the dust collection addition, but I am thinking about attaching the strap to the block with a t-nut that can be positioned in the t-track. No extra hole in the table and the position can be moved to either track.

Great design with some helpful details I’ve never seen before! On dust collection, I’ve found putting the hose as close as possible to the bit gets nearly everything, even with a Forstner bit.
@MWAWoodworks

That's the key. I've also tried using my 4" hose, but it's just too intrusive and can get in the way of operating the drill press
@keithgarcia5271
@keithgarcia5271 2 жыл бұрын
Try adding a step down adapter from 4" to 2" which will increase the velocity as it tries to maintain airflow. While you're down to that diameter, consider adding on one of the flexible semi-rigid hoses that hold shape and position to manage the perfect position close to the bit and stock.

This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzfaq.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

Some really awesome suggestions! Love your solution for holding the vac hose. I made a very similar drill press table by laminating 3 pieces of 1/2 baltic birch plywood, complete with track runners for hold downs and a homemade fence. I cut a rectangular hole in the top layer thinking it'd be easy to make replaceable inserts. It turned out pretty well and I made a bunch of inserts. Only problem is -- I NEVER have to replace them because I still use a scrap pieces on top of the table when drilling holes. lol

😂😄😂😂 I used to have a table with rectangle inserts and I never changed them because it was a pain to pop them out. I'm hoping this way just rotating it is simple and I'll actually do it.

@@MWAWoodworks Lol Would love to hear how the circle works for you in the long run -- agree spinning would be easier. Mine are easy to flip around or swap out, I just can't get past the idea that a single hole is going to require more effort (minimal as it may be), and add another step the next time I have to drill something. Definitely a mental obstacle and sounds silly but I've found it's too easy to keep a piece of MDF on the table and freely move it around. John Heinz has a video where he made a new drill press table sans replaceable inserts for the exact same reasons. Mentally, I went ... YES! haha At any rate, keep up the fantastic work ... appreciate the heck out of you!

This is by far the best drill press table I've seen, since Shop Nations drill press table lol. Shout to Travis for the under the table t-track idea. Touch of genius right there. Lots of features that are here and there from other drill press tables I've seen out there 👌🏻. I use magnets as much as I can in the shop but the idea to stick them under the table to catch any bits, didn't and prob would have never occurred to me. GENIUS. The caddy for bits at the table, I've seen that a lot around, specifically on Pinterest, BUT, never really thought it would make a good solution, simply b/c I'd be too lazy and leave the bits there as oppose to putting it up where it goes. Just a personal issue I guess 🤦🏻‍♀ lmao. The best feature, at least to me is the shop vac so simple yet, never would've thought about this at all.

That's going next level...then taking it up a notch. The only thing I can possibly think of is adding a sanding drum to give your drill press that capability.

I don't have a light on this one, but that's a good add on also!

Thanks MWA, got the plans and have started the build. One thing I note, is that the quality of Ply you have looks exceptional. In Australia we are very limited on quality ply with out spending a fortune. I have already spent over $340 on materials and thats not even using premium ply. I will do a video etc for Aussies with metric conversions and explaining about rubbish wood. Where do you get your wood from. What are your major outlets like.

Wow that's a crazy spend for such a small project. I wish you luck and look forward to your video. I get my wood locally in Nashville.
