When I’m carp fishing, choosing the right baiting approach is critical. It can make or break a session. What I want to do is create a situation which forces the carp to make a mistake. In this video, I show you some different ways of applying bait that I’ve used successfully. The first one is an old school classic where you don’t need any special equipment like spods or spombs. If you want to bait up at range with minimum disturbance, it’s a great way of getting a little bit of bait out in a zone without scaring the carp away. Then I’ll show you how to use flake to keep fish in your swim for longer and how to make a bag of boilies last longer.

Another great video Matt. I'm using PVA in 99% of my fishing. Not only is it super accurate, super versatile but burying your hook in a small bag saves the hook from getting damaged every cast you make. Which, lets face it, having a sharp hook is the single most important thing when fishing. Also, more relevant to the video, in my experience throwing in loads of bait is almost always the wrong approach. Star baiting is a totally new concept for me! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mark, thanks again for your comments of support. It’s very much appreciated. Carp can eat a lot of bait but all you need to catch one carp is one bait in the right place at the right time. Personally I’d usually always start off with simple PVA bag/mesh tactics and then move through the gears. Especially when doing day sessions. Once you start to get to know a water, then you can start applying bait to productive zones with confidence. Best of luck mate and I’d be interested to know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.

Another great video matt ,nice one .I love using flake in the margins and I use most of your techniques. A lot of modern carp anglers think the only way to catch is to spod the hell out of a swim.I like spreading bait to keep the carp picking one up and moving on to the next bait.pva bagging isn't for me where a carp can hover over the rig talking it's time. I know that PVA bagging has been done to death but actually I find that because I do use feed pellets and cereals in large quantities as part of my fishery management programme, PVA traps set off to one side still work! Loving the Scopex Squid. Good for our carp and I’ve had a fantastic season on it thus far. This one’s a keeper lol.

Another informative video Matt and helpful. Interestingly I'm seeing more venues banning particles recently switching over to boilie/pellet only. I presume down to over feeding and water quality.

Hi mate, thanks for your kind comments and support. I can understand that, particles can take a long time to break down if left uneaten and are generally a lot less attractive for carp to eat. They contain very little in the way of nutrition and the carp have to work quite hard to digest them. If I was a carp I know which I’d prefer. I’ve done a lot of testing on this and I would always choose boilies and pellets over particles. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Mathew as I'm recovering from a recent Hart attack I've found your tips well worth watching .I've used stringers for years but never tried your tip of casting out several stringers to bait up grate idea.one trick I use is to pop one boilie in a Nash baller with some boilie crumb and Fire them about the baited area then fish a stick of the same over it .I'd love to see some more tip videos from you most informative never to old to learn something new . Keep them coming and take care.

I never knew you could do that with a Nash baller and get it compact enough to get out at range. Are you catapulting or using a casting sling? New to your channel and find it very interesting and making things pretty straightforward, would you use flake made from multiple colours of boilies, I've never done any good on boilies but this year I am trying new tactics and your channel really helps 👍👍

Hi Jason, glad you’ve found the channel and I hope it continues to help you along your journey ☺ If you’ve never caught carp on a boilie, then changing your baiting to multi-colored flake, is not the answer I’m afraid. When I see anglers struggling at my lake, I always advise them to go back to the basics. Check out this video on my simple mono rig: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/guB2nNGSnpjGooE.html. Just tie a load up, grab a bag of boilies and go fishing. These rigs are designed to be disposable. That’s why I use cheap mono. Just use your mainline or whatever you have to hand. Spend all your money on the best hooks (Nash Chod Twisters in size 6’s or 8’s). Carp hooks damage very easily, for me they are a one use item. Do the same and you’ll become a more successful angler overnight! Use a basic running ledger (as shown in the video). Do not use lead clips unless the water is choked with weed. Ah yes, the pac man, it was actually invented by one of our regular guests. He did so well on the method that I shared it about and so it became a classic technique at the venue. Another string to the bow so to speak 😊

Another great video Matt. One trick there I’ve not seen before and great to see someone showing anglers they don’t have to fill lakes in with bait. Especially as that can ruin the session for whoever goes in behind them as well as themselves. I have always been a little frugal with bait, not because I’m tight, just for the reasons you’ve explained. I have seen the pac man technique in one of your other videos and will definitely use that one as I enjoy margin fishing. Something a lot of anglers seem to neglect. Just bought the Nash Bushwhacker for the stealthy baiting approach. In margins or in open water. It seems the fashion to fish as far out as they can and fill that spot in with wheelie bins full of bait. Not something I would do but each to their own I suppose.Thanks for the video look forward to the next one.

I have a bait boat but sometimes it’s just not accurate enough and it takes up a massive amount of space in my bivvy lol. @@matthewcollinsangler a bait boat is on my wish list for those occasions when a baiting pole or casting just won’t do it. Was a bit reluctant to buy a bait boat but they do have some great uses so at some point I will invest. Maybe a video on how to best use a bait boat is something you would consider doing for us at some point.

@@darrenfowler8308 Hi Darren, bait boats definitely have a role to play but I must admit they are never my go-to option. I like casting, I like dropping a rig from a rowing boat when great accuracy is required. I do use mine a lot more during the winter as they make running rigs out with good precision at night so much easier. At the end of the day it’s horses for courses ;) I have considered doing a video on bait boats so we’ll add it to the list. Thanks for your input. Cheers, Matt.

Hi David, having rolled my own bait for many years I don’t actually think that good quality commercial rolled bait is expensive but that’s my own personal view. You always get what you pay for and I’d rather use a smaller amount of good stuff than a large quantity of junk. For me bait is an extremely valuable resource that should be used with great care and attention and this is what this video is about. This year I’ve managed to make a very small amount of bolies go a very very long way! Cheers, Matt.

Very good and informational video Sir Collins! Thank You very much! Last October I accidentally created throughout the day the trap that You mentioned in 4:12 without even knowing it. I couldn't do a long enough cast and so I reeled in a couple of times and always put on a PVA mesh bag with boilies and pellets. It give me in the afternoon 2 beautiful 20ish pound carps! I plan to go this saturday to a different spot and plan to build again such a trap with boilies and pellets. Because it's still winter and colder, I wanted to ask if it would be a good tactic to use white lemon-aroma boilies for the trap and strawbery/banana on the rig? Or is it still too cold for fruit flavours? Thanks and all the best to You Sir!!

Personally I’m using the Nash Citruz this winter which is packed full of zesty fruit flavours so yes fruit flavours are definitely a good winter choice. It’s lower in protein than my food bait (Scopex Squid) so it’s easier for the carp to digest at this time of year. Personally, I would always use the same flavour of boilies on the hair as the free baits I’m applying. Best of luck for your session 🎣 Cheers, Matt.

Really enjoyed this video. Probably the aspect of specimen carp fishing I find the most challenging is the baiting approach. Will definitely use some of these tips on a difficult syndicate I recently joined. Any thoughts on baiting strategies on wilder venues and/or rivers... maybe a next video...

Hi Pieter, thanks again for commenting and for your support. Baiting right is the hardest aspect to master I feel. I’ve been developing my approaches for a range of venues over many years and every year I learn more! With regards to wilder venues my advice would be to use big boilies and as many of them as you can afford. Baiting frequency is really important. It’s better to use 500g every day than to use 3.5kg in one hit if you see what I mean? It’s a great idea to do a video on this topic. We’ll see what we can do :) If baiting frequently is not an option due to distance then I would advocate that you try my single bait approach. Think cultured Scopex Squid, think glugged baits, think sprays… anything to make that single bait stand out in a sea of nothing. Sounds nuts right? I’m not a religious man but this is where faith comes into play! If you focus on being in the right place at the right time then a single bait is all you need. Matthew Collins I can imagine that being a problem there. Our nuisance fish are Sharptooth Catfish and smaller carp. They tend to be fairly inactive in winter, smaller carp is generally avoided by either using cluster baits, larger baits or something like a hinged stiff rig

Hi Gaz, I used to roll my own bait and then freeze it but it’s a lot of work and I don’t have as much time nowadays so I’ve stopped making it on a large scale. Last year I switched over to the Nash stabilised bait range. Stabilised baits have a shelf life of 2 years (if stored correctly). Stabilised baits use water soluble human grade food preservatives which wash out when immersed in water.They contain exactly the same ingredients as fresh baits (except the stabiliser) so they are basically identical. The carp can’t tell the difference and they are much more convenient to use. During the winter I use the Nash Citruz. When I want to give them a proper food bait I switch over to the Scopex Squid. For my public fishing I’ll be using the Candy Nut Crush. I’ve tested it at mine and it was an instant success so definitely a good option. Cheers, Matt.

This reminds me of using a piece of spaghetti between two boilies fire a few pairs out and use double baits on the hair, great very underused method

Ah yes we had a guest try that here and it did work. I used to fish double baits all the time but I never tried the technique myself. Definitely one to consider though.

I use pva string for stringers ( Clues in name). Still don't understand why the past 5 years the trend is to use tape on stringers. Strings stronger and cheaper and melts just as fast 🤔

Nice video 🎣. You didn't show how you locked the boilies at the bottom, of the PVA string ,tape. You could of also used a boilie tube shooter or a spod, loaded with partical bait 🤔

Hi Andy, one of the reasons why I use tape is that you don’t need to do anything to it. Just leave 10-15mm extra and unless you are casting to the moon, the baits should stay in place. If you really need to be extra secure just make an overhand knot at the bottom and slide the baits down to that. Obviously you can use a throwing stick or catapult but it’s not as accurate as casting to a clip and you won’t get neat piles/lines of bait. I do a lot of stealthy baiting in my fishing. It’s all horses for courses 😉

What really matters is how and when you apply it. If you’re fishing for carp that see a lot of angling pressure then this video is for you. It goes beyond the normal approach of spraying bait all over the show or spodding the granny out of a spot with munga. If you enjoy taking a little more time and trouble with your baiting and want to offer the carp something different, then these techniques will give you some new edges to incorporate into your carp fishing.

I make baits to sell always buy high quality ingredients and I may go over the top but everything in my baits are in for a reason for the carps health and wealth.

Even coarse fish groundbait is great for edge spots for carp because there is so many little food particles to keep them occupied for a long time , I get a lot more pickups doing that than using just whole pellets or boilies and it's cheaper 👍🎣

Hi Paul, ah a fellow bait roller! I’ve been making my own bait for years but because of Brexit, sourcing the ingredients became difficult. I’ve now switched over to commercially rolled bait but I’m very happy with the quality of the Scopex squid, 30% protein is very good for a commercial bait. It’s great that you emphasise quality over quantity. It’s what I’ve always done myself. I wish you all the best with your bait rolling. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Oli, yes absolutely mate, anything to get them grubbing about. I like the flake as it’s just so convenient. I don’t have to commit to making up a mix, just use exactly what I want, when I want then reseal the bag. It’s been a revelation to me ;) All the best with your fishing. Cheers, Matt.

Just started watching your content and have to say one of my very favourite carp channels. Have you tasted pva? It is very bitter. Do you think the carp can taste any undissolved pva within the baits and will it repel them? Just a thought that keeps going through my mind. Thanks for your content 😉👍

Wow, thanks, that’s great to hear mate! Well I’ve done a lot of licking and sticking in my time and I’ve never noticed a bitter taste in the gear I use. For the last two years I've been using the PVA from Nash. I’ve just nipped down to my garage and eaten some narrow PVA tape. It dissolves nicely in the mouth with zero taste so maybe the gear you are using is a bit funky? Carp have the most incredible sensitive taste buds so I can see why you’ve been concerned about this. Might be worth trying another brand?

@@gh-vi9tk I did chew it mate and that accelerated the breakdown of the PVA in my mouth. It was gone in 30 seconds. There was zero taste.

It's funny thinking back I remember when pva first became available I used to get mine off a diver who worked on the rigs he'd bring sheets of the stuff home for us we'd literally sit and make our own huge bags, the pva was incredibly thick and took a fair while to desolve but it was devastating, until it wasn't of course, I went back onto stringers and it was devastating, until it wasn't of course, lol

Hi Lee, thanks very much for sharing your experiences. I first read about PVA in a coarse fishing book which I read religiously as a boy. I had no idea what it was or what it stood for lol. They were advocating its use for eels! My very first serious attempt at catching carp consistently centered around an open end feeder. The more I look back on those days I realise that actually we haven't moved on much from the basic concepts of casting free bait to create a situation that helps us to catch carp lol.
