I bought my Panerai in 2007. Even though it it had none of the symptoms Federico mentioned above, I brought it into the NYC Madison Ave. boutique for service in 2017. Just to be proactive and a good owner. One year later, it has a gritty watch wind and power reserve is just a few hours. What happened? It's was only 1 year! Now it's rarely in my wear rotation.

Well timed topic fed. I rotate my watches quite regular. If only wear it a day or two the power reserve doesn’t last long at all if however I wear it say a week which is rare it seems to perk up and last longer. Is that normal? I hope it is otherwise I got a lot of watches to service?oh great content as usual

That is pretty normal but a good way to test it out is to wind them 40-50 times to make sure they are fully wound and then test the reserve by not wearing it for a couple of days.

Federico, I heard that in order to use the Timegrapher correctly, you need first knowing and adjusting some parameters to your specific watch speed, so that the Timegrapher is giving you real results instead of standard not accurate (so you would need to adjust the timegrapher to every single watch); I just do not remember which parameter/s they were exactly. Would you know? Thank you!

That is correct. Though 85% of watches use the same parameters.

Whatever you do don't send your watch to the Philippines for service, it'll come back powered by rubber bands and sealed with bubble gum. Send it to me, I have only 5 hours modding experience but already know which cooking oils are the best to keep the movement running, _it's clarified butter_

Well if you think about it, its a high beat rate movement with a limited edition higher beats rate 1/10th of a sec chronograph. The movement is under massive stress.

It's probably more of target than other watches, but I don't worry about it outside of the normal travel precautions I take. I just traveled to Germany through JFK and Frankfurt, on trains and through train stations in both NYC metro and Germany with my Portuguesier and Yachtmaster, and no issues. I'm more concerned about my wallet getting picked so I keep that in the front pocket.

Put it near a compass. Move it back and forth and see if the needle moves. Lepsi has a phone app (free I think) that tests for magnetism.

My automatic watch is accurately running. However every time I manually wind the watch the rotor starts to rotate. What causes that?

When you wind you are actually going through the automatic gear set. Some movements tend to have more drag and will move the rotor when you wind. What movement is are you experiencing this?

Lupică its the one year old Hamilton Field Khaki automatic. Their version of ETA called H704450.

Dmitry I’ve read about issues with Hamilton and their ETA-based modified movements. Not necessarily the issue you described, but it gave me enough pause to not consider purchasing a Hamilton. Allegedly their ETA-based watches perform better and have less issues.

Another thing to look for in manual wind watches is if it the mainspring has a clutch or stopping point because if it is the latter, over-winding or just age can cause the spring to detach from the barrel and slip, significantly lowering the torque and power reserve.
