Imagine dying and your skeleton becomes part of a Disney ride...

What about the man on the porch? It’s either A) The ride is his memories as a pirate in reverse. With the refurbs being as a way his are memories changing due to his age. Or B) It’s old Jack Sparrow retired after he got his treasure at the end of the ride.

Phantom Manor is closing now after this weekend until end of september, It seems they also will change some things in the ride

A Disney trip is never complete without at least 5 rides on Pirates! But I gotta say, the weiiiiirdest thing about the ride to me is Disney's decision to make Davy Jones tell you that dead men DO tell tales after so much moaning that they don't. What's up with that, Davy?

Oh great... Bambi rock cannot be unseen now. Regarding the stuff sticking out of the bird's chest; I always thought it was the rudiments of feather quills left over after shaving the bird's chest (why one would want to shave a parrot's chest I do not know... I assume it was same tattooed chest gag used on the original pirate parrot greeter at Walt Disney World in the que, just not executed well because of the vantage point). I am not a fan of the auction scene changes because it further disrupts what is left of the original storyline: if you listen to the bonus tracks on the Reddot Pirates of the Caribbean CD that was once sold in the park, the original story was that once you view the cursed treasure you are sent back in time to the pirate days. The painting above the bar is meant to depict the same redhead in the auction scene, when she officially becomes a pirate. The auction scene is how she got her start into piracy: you will note she is the only female that seems to embrace the idea of being auctioned off, and has no fear of it. Atencio touched on this idea very slightly when I interviewed him for my defunct fanzine (unfortunately that tape is somewhere in my dragone horde of stuff and I never published anything on pirates as he was being interviewed about other attractions). The implication I got from Atencio was that all of the skeletons in the grotto are representative of of the "live" pirates you see later showing distinct personalities for each one... so the skeletons are how they ended up finally at the end of their pirating days, and when you are sent back in time you see how they used to be. If I recall correctly at one time there was a hidden Mickey on the underside of the barrels hanging from the roof before you go back up the waterfall lift at the end (you had to look straight up while under it to see it.... whether it is still there or not I am not sure I've not been to the park since the 50th Anniversary).

YES it’s the return of 5 Weird Things! I’m so happy! I love what Randomland Adventures has become (the perfect combo of both channels and even better quality content more often! I loved 'Pirates' since I was a little kid. My dad got me a model kit of the skeleton pirate steering the ships wheel. I remember putting it together and painting it. It seems like a had another model of Pirates too. Since then it had a special meaning to me:) I still love that ride!

The Pirates of the Caribbean in Disney has been changing for as long as I have been riding it, and I've been riding it since the 80's. As far as the auction scene being force to change cause too many people complain it's sexist, the scene been around as long as the ride has and that was 50 years ago.

Had a feeling that if anyone was gonna show me some Disneyland trivia that I didn't know for once it was gonna be you. *hats off*

It's funny you mention the spikey bird. I just watched a Pirates documentary where they addressed that specific bird. A designer said that a guy was telling her about a real bird in the real New Orleans that was so old it had plucked its feathers out. At this time Walt was starting to deteriorate so she made her own version of that bird to cheer him up and eventually place in the ride. She said she stuck toothpicks and wire in it to create the look! Very interesting!

My family got stuck on the upward hill near the end of the ride for what seemed like hours. It was actually only 45 minutes but it was so uncomfortable and a little scary sitting there at that steep angle. This was interesting, thanks!

Great Video! As for the musician question - check out David Cordingly's books on the subject. Pirates were known for keeping musicians around simply to entertain them.

Years ago (around 2000) I took a "Walk in Walt's footsteps tour at Disneyland. The tour director told us that the imaginears had life masks made of themselves to use as the faces in The Pirates of the Caribbean ride. She said this included Walt Disney and that one of the pirates is actually a mold of Walt's face. She wouldn't tell us which one it is, only that the scene had a donkey in it.

As a pirate reenactor, I would like to point out musicians on pirate ships would be very common. Music and singing of shanties would be used for timing and keeping everyone in sync while working aboard ship. So having someone playing the flute, really would not be that odd.

On the flute player, I am sure that you know the life on a sailing ship was very hard. To relieve the boredom, captains allowed musical instruments to be brought on board by any member of the crew. A musician could play (while others worked) to aid the seamen at their work (thus sea chants and other tunes). Musicians would often play during battles to help with signals to the crew. Drums, fiddles and flutes were all common instruments. There is even a tale of a pirate raid in Scotland where two women were left behind in favor of a piper. So I never found the pirate flute player in PotC all that odd. And yes, he and his hooked comrade do look awfully familiar.
