You should never duct tape your windows as hurricane preparation. It makes them weaker, which is why when you hit them with a brick the whole window shattered. Debris is an issue, but hurricane winds can be strong enough to shatter windows on their own. So if you duct tape them, you're actually putting your house in danger instead of protecting them because the damage won't be concentrated (i.e. brick hole). Duct tape will make the whole window shatter and have glass fly around the house whereas the natural bonds in the glass of un-taped windows should be strong enough to withstand high winds. Just saying, I'm a Floridian, and I'm a little concerned about endorsing duct tape for that type of thing since every year we have to warn folks NOT to do this...

The reason that the duct tape window completely shattered is because it was made of different type of glass than the other window. It was made of safety glass, as opposed to regular tempered glass (I think) in the other window. Safety glass is designed to shatter into smaller pieces to lessen the risk of huge lacerations to the body
