I have TONS of respect for anyone who can find truly interesting compositions with that wide of a wide angle. It is very, very hard to do. Often one has to trick themselves into believing that a foreground element is far more interesting than what it _actually_ is. (Of course this is coming from a portrait guy that lives life between 70-105).

😁😁😅 Very guilty of this! In the field, take one sunset, add a large foreground rock, boom job done. Then in post, heavily apply the belief filter 🤣

@@journeytoaphotograph Ha!! Yeah, I think geologists might be the only people who appreciate rocks more than photographers. And even that is only sometimes. But I apply that foreground belief filter myself, of course. As a portrait guy I have a collection of pictures of blurry bushes, tree limbs and leaves that could make a Home & Garden catalog. Followed by sometimes running that belief filter through some frequency separation, too .

Really enjoyed this Nigel. I find wide angle creates so much foreground it can be difficult to eliminate and isolate my landscape so this has been really helpful. Loved the images captured. Thanks for sharing.

Granted, you do find some amazing spots to shoot - but there's so much more. The way you can take in an entire scene, and find the beauty, the sweet spot - it's a talent very few have. I'd love to be shooting your "mistakes". But really? Your "mistakes" are "happy little accidents" (Bob Ross quote). I truly admire that you look to your own work, and critique that. You don't take other people's work and say "they should have done this or that". You are a true giant in your profession, and I cherish the knowledge you share with us. Thank you for another great video tutorial.

The biggest mistake people make with wide angles is using too wide an angle, so all you see is the foreground. But I agree that an L-bracket (and a levelling base) are essential game changers for a tripod!

Really good points as usual Nigel. I feel like good Wide-angle photos are a good indicator of someone's skill/experience, because it's such a difficult lens to create simple, pleasing images with. Hope Antarctica has treated you well (it certainly looks like it has!) 😁

Love the content! One thing that I still struggle is with focus, I’d love to see you show where you focused on your pic examples. Sometimes I don’t know if you had to focus-stack the photos.

Thanks for this video Nigel, some really usfull info i have picked up from it. Liked the printed shot. Envious of your Antarctica trip, went there on ship a few years ago visiting places like South Georgia Sandwich islands, Falklands and on to Antarctica itself. Looking forwards to your shots. Good luck with the ships internet, we had limited availability and quite costly.

I know how much time this takes, adding in the drone shots, setting up the camera and walking in and out of shots, especially if you are on your own, plus the time thinking about the shots themselves. Nigel, great video as always. I recently got the Fuji 10-24 and I have to say its completely transformed the way I think about photography. It provides huge scope for creativity and I love overcoming the technical challenges that come with it, focus, shutter speed, tripod positioning and I especially love getting that super sharp detail in the foreground that really draws the eye in. As always I learned from your videos so keep up the good work and have a fab time in Antarctica.

Wonderful points and well illustrated as usual. Loved so many images in this vlog...well done. Question on the shot with the tufts of grass along the creek, do you find that you need to focus stack using wide angle more often to retain the sharpness? I believe that image was taken at f9 if I recall, but I often come home with a solid composition (I think) then I’m disappointed looking at the detail particularly in the immediate foreground. Any helpful hints? Thank you for your continued high quality vlogs!

Thanks for this great video on wide angle lenses Nigel. I struggle a lot with compositions with my 10-20mm Sigma (cropped sensor) so I do not use it very often. Your tips have given me encouragement to go out with my wide angle lens and experiment. I watched your video twice as there was so much information for me to take in in your video. Thanks again.

Nigel, all great points and inspiration to challenge me when out with my camera. I fail all the time with getting my tripod out too early and failing to do the work in finding the composition to get a foreground subject become an object of interest. I rarely go below 24mm because I simply don't challenge myself enough (and I should) with those wider focal lengths. What I do to go wide is to shot panoramas. I don't know if it would make a good video topic, but I would enjoy your take on the pros/cons of wide angles against a panorama. Thanks again for contributing these wonderful stories and tips.

Great video and absolutely brilliant final print! Contrast is spot-on, and everything balances perfectly, like you said. I tend to struggle with all of these aspects when using my 20mm, so I always appreciate the tips. I think my biggest are no "star" and wrong focus point. Then definitely not quite getting the framing right.

Nice one Nigel. The use of foreground material is one which is so, so important in w/a photography, especially when in portrait format. Also, the notion of getting very close to larger background elements if you wish to still use the wide end is very important. Otherwise, I believe you have to have some decent sky formation to balance the foreground.

I noted your comment on remembering to consider shooting in portrait when using a wide angle lens, for me it's the opposite way around as my default orientation with my 15-35mm lens is in portrait. Hello Nigel, Hope you trip is going amazingly well? I love wide angle images but as you say some time there is just to much sky or foreground. So I have started using my Hasselblad in Xpan mode. Wow that open a whole big bag of excitement. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy your image making.

Great video! One of the best bits of advice I can give regarding compositions and how to frame a shot is to spend some time using just one prime lens and no tripod! It teaches you to use your feet and move around the scene before getting in the bad habit of mounting it on the tripod straight away. I’ve just got back from the Coe this week running a workshop my god the weather was difficult!

A great, moody and atmospheric shot of Buachaille Etive Mor Nigel. I've got a 20mm prime lens in my bag, and I must admit, I've hardly used it. I wonder these days whether the pano shot, where you've maybe taken three or four shots to capture a composition gives you the best of both worlds? Perhaps the subject of a forthcoming vlog? I love that you print those favourite images, it brings them alive! A final thought from me - does using your Apple setup give you a good fidelity between what you see on the screen, and the final print, because this always feels like a black art to me. Again, perhaps the subject of a vlog in the future. Have fun in Antarctica!

Very interesting and plenty of food for thought it's left me thinking, do I need a wider lens than I have? I'd already decided to use mine more this year and take advantage of the focal distortion. Great tips thank you Nigel.
