What about Strawinsky and the Mysterious House and it's garbage-meme ratio? I've never even seen parts of that film until seeing this video! I do say as to why "Globlobloblob" (sorry if I butchered the name) is a meme that exists due to that movie... XD *Soldier and Engie wheeze in amusement*

The Lorax also got itself some controversy over the marketing like disposable diapers or the Mazda CX-5 which is an SUV! Heck, Mazda isn't exactly an environmentally friendly vehicle brand. They could've used the Chevy Volt or the Nissan Leaf instead.

Something about the Illumination adaption of the Lorax that’s always intrigued me is that, if you take a look at the film’s soundtrack, there’s this amazing unused demo called “Biggering” that’s essentially a much darker and grittier version of “How Bad Can I Be?”. It’s not a villain song so much as an exploration of the Once-ler’s personal reflections, self-awareness, and eventual sense of denial. All of the themes of the song culminate into a gorgeously dramatic climax that’s followed by an extremely haunting emptiness at the very end. I can’t help but wonder if that song is a glimpse of what might have been if the film hadn’t been oversimplified and commercialized so much.
@Orwin_Crossheart
@Orwin_Crossheart 2 жыл бұрын
That's actually what "Biggering" is. Illumination's The Lorax was going to be darker and more faithful to the book. Then the execs went no, that's too scary for kids and won't sell and we got the version we got.

Maybe I'm just blocked with nostalgia, but The Lorax was one of my favorite movies. Sure, the environmental message only hit home in the third act, but I was entertained and bewildered by the wonderous story as a child. I adores the Lorax and everything that Audrey stood for. The last act had me at the edge of my seat and super emotional because of the music numbers. I felt as thought everybody was united in a way that is never usually pulled off. Yes, it was cheesy that it was through song, but that's what I loved. Idk, I wrote this in like two minutes.

After watching what you have to say about The Lorax a second time, I can see what you have against it for having a central corporate bad guy to be responsible for everyone else's lack of environmental consciousness, but I still believe it was brilliant in its own way for how it made the Once-ler a relatable villain. The Once-ler is a reflection of ourselves in both versions of The Lorax in different ways. If I may take a very long quote from theantimonyelement's imdb review of The Lorax, "The original Once-ler was a faceless force of destruction, a shadowy embodiment of greed. This Once-ler is just a stupid kid with a dream, a guy who wants to change the world. He's not evil, but he lets his success get to his head, and that brings about his own downfall and the destruction of the forest. That's FANTASTIC, and here's why: that's how the world really is! Companies don't sit around all day cackling about how much smog they're pumping into the atmosphere; it's a process, and something that happened gradually. Obliviousness is just as dangerous as maliciousness, and that's a really powerful lesson. This can happen to YOU if you're not careful; anybody can hurt the planet if they don't pay attention. That's a rare lesson, and one I'm really pleased to see in this movie." December 4, 2019, 2:19pm

Another thing I loved about Coraline is the fact that it's all made in STOP-MOTION. It's incredibly well animated and the people behind it obviously put so much talent into it. One of the interesting things about the Secret of NIMH (1982) is all the fantastic and magical aspects of the film are entirely limited to the film itself. The original book, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, was almost 100% strictly a hard science-fiction book (the lone fantasy element being the animals' ability to talk to each other, think like humans, and, of course, the rats' gaining of human-level intelligence, concept of morality, and lifestyle). A curious fact about the book is that it was directly inspired by John B. Calhoun's Experiment 25, the "Rat Utopia", which demonstrated the Behavioral Sink phenomenon of both social animal societies and human civilizations.

I think one of the reasons the How To Train Your Dragon Films turned out so well, is because they have Douglas Sloan on the staff. You may not know this man by name, but you may know his work. He was able to churn out the third season of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and Power Rangers Zeo in a span of a year and a half. And he was the man behind several good live-action Disney films.

The sad part about Lorax 2012 is, it *had* potential. There were *like one or two* things that it did exceptionally well. For example, I really liked how it didn't make the Once-ler evil and greedy right away; he was a reasonable, careful guy perfectly willing to cooperate starting out, just like we all think we'd be if we were in his place, only to steadily start succumbing to external pressure, like we all think we're too strong for, until he eventually slips into the irredeemable, like we all think couldn't possibly happen to us but, if we don't watch our backs, very much could. That's how *most* evil corporations start. Hardly anybody sets out *wanting* to crush everyone else under their heels from day one, and those that do don't get far enough to be able to do real damage like those who think they're justifiable. I mean, that could have been a _very powerful message_ that could have very much _enhanced_ the book's original message if they gave a single damn about the book's original message. But there's just way, way too much wrong dragging anything right down.
@poweroffriendship2.0
@poweroffriendship2.0 4 жыл бұрын
That would be too perfect for an adaptation. The Lorax shows that evil corporation destroys everything just for the sake of green piece of paper. And that message reflects Illumination Studios. Making predictable storylines for money while getting your audience tortured can be meaningful. If the studio gets a chance to make better stories and not the average ones, the Illumination Studios could be a great studio.
@Obsessor23
@Obsessor23 4 жыл бұрын
@@poweroffriendship2.0 Problem is that that's basically Illumination's MO, and has been for a while; make a movie with minimal funds, make it very inoffensive and safe, but eye-catching enough to fill theater seats, in order to maximize profit. They have all the chance in the world to make good films, they're just content making so-so ones.
@poweroffriendship2.0
@poweroffriendship2.0 4 жыл бұрын
@@Obsessor23 That kinda explains everything because Illuminations Studio was afraid to discuss any interesting topics about real struggles, making some dark atmosphere, and make some hidden adult jokes that kids won't understand. If the studio was like that, it will be more different studio than what we got now. You know? Kids movies are like utopia, it means nowhere, because they don't experience any sufferings and make something that are "safe" for the people. But the "safety" is just a part of survival instead of the living. No self awareness needed.

I can see that. Actually kids do think about these things. When they have to explain it to someone, and aren't being judged, surprisingly deep and unique thoughts and explanations come out of them. It's good to see that acknowledged I know a lot of people that talk to kids with "kid speak" or "kid gloves," but when you just talk exactly on the same level -as if they're an adult, you'll discover that they're a lot smarter than they're given credit for and they wonder and think about all these little observations that really do have an impact on life and others. It's fascinating and profound.

At least Jim Carrey had fun with his role of the Grinch and probably had fun through out the movie and knew how bad it was at some point.

It was such a breath of fresh air hearing someone actually appreciate Captain Underpants for its animation style and ability to use potty humor in a relatively not-annoying way. I've also seen Horton Hears a Who on a list of worst Blue Sky movies, so I was relieved it was on the best list here.

Before I revisited this movie as… A mature and sophisticated adult (m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNVznrWexKvceYk.html)… I used to think that this would be one of the best Dr. Seuss feature films (if not one of the best films period) before I revisited it in mid-2021 just after the death of Blue Sky. But looking back at it now… Meh (at least it has Seussical animation going for it??? But I feel like even the best aspect of this movie has cringe to it like that anime joke. Otherwise, this movie is just there for the kiddies to see a great book/short stretched out to 90 minutes)

5th worst: Growing up with the books, I feel like Teddy would rise from the grave to stop this movie from being made. Also TAY TAY was in this movie?! Oh, Illumination... I've actually heard they deleted an awesome rock opera style song from the movie called "Biggering" please look it up or just watch Joshscorchers video on Non Disney villain songs 5th best: Awww, I remember this one! The sour Kangaroo was the most interesting villain. I loved the Who's designs, especially Jojo's! 4th worst: I love the old Grinch movie and Book anyway, so The Grinch won't be a hit for me... 4th best: I LOVE this movie! I remember my school having a movie night with this and, frankly, it's very underrated! My favorite joke was the one that came immediately after the contact lens joke Flint: ...Oh my gosh, a jaywalker! Earl: *proceeds to beat the guy up* 3rd worst: Uuuuugh...I remember when this was in print ads everywhere...and Aang was in this movie as a voice for Lucas?! I'm sorry for any Avatar fans that watched it... 3rd best: I actually have Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, so I definitely should look into this movie 2nd worst: UGH, they're still making these movies?! Don't get me wrong, some of these Tom and Jerry movies are guilty pleasures for me, I just don't get why Hana Barbera still thinks the cat and mouse are popular! 2nd Best: WOOHOO! Another childhood favorite! Toothless is my favorite dragon...he's a blend between Stitch and Grogu with wings! Honorable Mentions 1. I actually have a 3D version of this, but lost the DVD somewhere... 2. Wow...Wes Anderson strikes again! I've never seen this one, but it looks like a very "autumn" movie that I'd watch with a warm cup of apple cider or cocoa. You bet I'll try and check it out! 3. Charlotte's Web was a book I had to read in elementary school when I was a kid...I didn't know it had a movie! Well, the only example was the Dakota Fanning one, but I think you'll cover that another time... 4. AHHHHHH! My favorite Studio Ghibli film! Howl, Sophie, the dog, the war, Howls birdie form, The backgrounds the colors, ITS SO PRETTY! Interesting fun fact: did you know that Billy Crystal (aka Mike Wazowski) voices Calcifer? 5. Eh, I dunno...I love bunnies (Heck, I was born under the Year of the Rabbit), but this one might be a bit too scary for me...maybe for Halloween, but don't expect me to be okay after watching it... 6. LOVED this movie! It was so very snappy and colorful and just...very 90s, but in a good way! Dishonorable Mentions 1. I agree...a one joke gimmick that should NEVER have gotten a sequel, let alone a Netflix show. 2. Meh. Thats all I have to say. Worst: Oh...Oh God...🤮 Best: Woah. I've never seen this...WHY?! It looks so wonderful and it looks so much like a "summer" movie!

I must admit I did enjoy The Grinch but now that you mention Horton Hears a Who, it wasn't even close as good. Was a fun thing to watch with friends but I wouldn't watch it again and again. One thing I didn't like was the grinch's design, like you said he just looks like a dude that didn't drink coffee this morning. I think he looks too soft, but I assume it was an attempt from Illumation to make him more sympathetic?? Ok choice for marketing, not so good choice for an adaptation!

I mean look at the Grinch's teeth they are so pearly white and bugs just show up it doesn't mix well for me also. I think one of the favorites overall is the classic cartoon from Chuck Jones and I guess when I look back at it Jim Carrey actually did a great job, Sure it's uncanny (At most the Who's are scarier funnily enough.) But that's the thing with The Grinch he's supposed to look nasty/terrifying I mean that smile never ceases to creep me out its literally how the Grinch would look in reality and I love it actually though the Who's could need ADJUSTMENTS nevertheless Jim's expressive exaggerated movements did make him have more life to the character... And now he's playing freaking Dr. Robotnik, A.K.A The Eggman! xD Do you remember his puppet version that I think Jim Henson made?

The How to Train Your Dragon films may be loved by around 90% of the world’s population, but they are nothing compared to the books. So many of the plot points and characters in the books were dumbed down, messed up or eradicated completely. While I think the films are good as their own separate franchise, I read the books first and I just can’t stop thinking about how Dreamworks virtually ignored the source material for them. They are pretty much a separate franchise in their own right, and only bear a passing resemblance to the books.
