I have something I want to mention: When it comes to creating child and teenager characters, I find it easy to imagine their personality as a adult first before imagining the personality as a teenager and child. I don't know if this will work for everyone but I find it easy to decide the characters goal and then adding the stepping stones rather than adding the stepping stones but unsure of the end goal. Adults seem to be easier to write about compared to children and teenagers. Well, to me anyway haha! Apologies if this comment is worded strangely. 😅

Well I found myself 🙂 This is literally me like I already know the child/teenager goal and their adult personalities before I even know the younger self personality I think the cause of this at least for me is that I always find it soooo cool when in the end In anime, shows their future self and family, friends, jobs ect. And half of the reason I make my comics is bc the adult version of themselves 😅 plus bc I get excited when I see them in the future and when they succeeded their goal 🥳🤗

When I'm trying to create a story for my characters I'm always worried that it won't be unique enough. I have the same worries with my characters, when people compare my characters to other characters I think it's funny, but sometimes it actually kind of hurts, not gonna lie. It's really hard to create anything unique because it feels like everything has already been done.
@shojodraws3399
@shojodraws3399 3 жыл бұрын
My best advice is to just keep going with what you already have. What makes something unique is not how many times it's been done before, what makes it neat is HOW something is done.

I know what you mean. I also feel a bit sad when people compare my characters to other characters. A piece of advice I heard once is that it's okay to not be 100% unique. Like their are so many stories about kids going to a school for students with special powers, but they all have there own perspective and are different in there own ways. Even my webcomic is just a typical high school drama...but it's unique because it was written by me, my experiences, and my thoughts. Sorry for the long comments I hope it helps a little. ^^;

Another tip: Figure out which characters you don't need early on or you'll get attached to them and their relationships with the other characters and can't get rid of them because you love them despite there already being a moderately large cast of characters each with their own complex backstories who you also can't get rid of.

By the way, you mentioned how hard it was to manage and track your numerous character in Your Next Door Neighbor. Just a tip: Make a table, with the events at the very top and the characters at the very left. In every slot, you would write about what happened to the character during the event. It's a method used by J.K.Rowling herself ;)

That’s probably where most people suffer. There are two main reasons for this usually (there’s probably a lot more I didn’t take the time to think about). They might actually be pretty obvious. 1. We fear commitment: if it takes a massive amount of time out my life I could be using to do something else, then I don’t want to do it. 2. It’s for school: need I say more? Everyone who liked school became fast food employees like the rest. If it’s for school, then it’s required, and if it’s required, then... no.

@@sylviaisafoot6570 (don’t mind my way of spelling colour, I’m australian so that’s how I spell it lol) both r correct for me lol, I had a really clean sketch in my book that was ready for lineart and colour but I didn’t line it or colour it for like 2-3 months bc I was scared I’d ruin it XD and yep, school work is just a big no, I can write somewhat good basic guidelines for things when I know that if I don’t like it, I can just delete it and do something completely different, with school I’m like “ugh, I love my idea but now if I don’t like it I can’t do something else. I give up”

Tip: remember that everything you write about your character may not end up in your story. I often see artists get super excited to share the character sheets, and they have pages worth of exposition about that character in the description. Look at Araki’s (creator of JJBA) character description sheets. There’s information about characters on there that you probably wouldn’t know unless you read those sheets. It’s good to know in order for him to write the characters realistically, but it’s not stuff that WE need to know in order for the story to progress. Also, show. Don’t tell. Let’s say your character’s favorite food is cookies. You don’t need to have your character say that when they introduce themselves. That’s not something people do in real life and would break the immersion. Instead, maybe you can have them eat a huge plate of cookies during an eating scene or have their eyes light up at the mere mention of cookies. Subtlety goes a long way.

As a writer, I've been writing since I was 9, I've learned that the best way to improve your writing abilities is by trial and error along with reading other's work. How I work around to get the general idea and premise of the story is ask myself 6 simple questions that will help me garner an idea and be able to make sense of it. 1. What is the Genre? 2. When and Where is the Story Taking Place? 3. Who are some of the main characters? 4. What POV (point of view) will the story be in? 5. What is the plot/conflict? 6. What are you trying to say? 7. (Optional) What is the title? These questions help me gather my ideas and help make them into a story that I can tell with confidence. It also helps to write down all your ideas, plot, characters, world rules, and some extra stuff in a note or Google Doc. I'm a young writer who is still learning as I go, but writing is a way I am able to creatively express my thoughts and stories. I just wanted to share my tips as well with anyone who sees my comment. Thank you and have a great day!

Funny, I'm m9re of a writer than a drawer, but I also do the same routine: Get a sudden idea/scene that I would rush to write down, spending hours on my computer on my google doc for fledgeling stories. But when I'd later look at what I's written, I'd realize it's not connected to the story at all. But for me, I just use that as oppurtunities to develop the story to get a really good and complicated bridge between the story and the idea, opening up a bunch of stuff I could do in the future

I'm more of a drawer then writer and my stories always get super messy. have an idea in my mind but as I write It down changes but then the beginning doesnt make much sense and the story just kinda gets messy. I do it with drawing changing my idea as I draw but for writing that's not really a good thing lol. I applaud you for being able to do that. Writing is so hard(to me at least)

@edenisok894
@edenisok894 3 жыл бұрын
@@chang9576 neat lines usually just depends on the brush/pen texture and how many lines you use. Details idk, for shading and emotion references and stuff I guess. I mostly just watch a lot of comics and art stuff and think about how they make them. Idk how people keep story plots in their head and write them for so long without going totally off track. Also I don't read much so that's also a reason why my writing sucks. But how do you write scenes though. Foreshadowing in writing is kinda hard because you dont usually add details unless it's needed so if you said "on the table there was a necklace" people will know it's something to remember. For art you just add it in the background
@edenisok894
@edenisok894 3 жыл бұрын
@@chang9576 angles and poses are hard. The hardest part is composition, bruh my drawings are always lopsided. Like the character is to the right too much and then there's nothing to balence it out and it's just a whole mess. I just keep it simple, anatomy, two lines and a circle for eyes, not a lot of extra detail. And then mess it up completely when doing lineart :|

This was a lovely video, thank you for the tips! It was very refreshing for me. ^-^ I also have a simple tip for conquering writer's block. I'm currently writing a book, and one thing that helps me avoid writer's block is to forget the detail. If I'm having trouble putting something into words, I just write what is happening in a very simple way, and move on. Then I edit it all later and add way more detail. If I don't know what should happen, I start writing in a random direction. If it feels off (I'm still stuck), I start over and write in a different direction, until it finally feels right and I'm able to continue smoothly. But I never delete what I write.

@@imdani4997 Just to sit down and do the work is hard, and it is an accomplishment to complete little everyday, even if it turns out to be a failure. So don’t worry! Even writers have trouble too when it comes to writing! I hope this helps :)

as someone who has written a story before,im not a pro tho but try to plan whats going to happen in every chapter in a notebook or in the notes,it can keep you on track if you like to be in control of the whole story plot,and try to list a few things about your oc in the first pages of the notebook so if you forget about what their favorite colors,hobbies or mannerisms you can always backread, and also as i was trying to come up with a plot for my ocs this came up!! so thanks rebeka!! idk how to call you, i wanna call you ate but eh.. HAHAHAHHA

I'm the complete opposite of "Drawing first, writing later", I had multiple OCs with (kind of) completed stories but I had no idea about what they would look like if I met them in their story. I've only recently been getting into drawing them and have improved a lot. It's kinda sad that my drawing tablet is broken and my computer crashes every once in a while so I keep losing my projects. I started watching your videos about two months ago and I really like them! Have a great day!

I’m currently making a story and I have all the characters thought out. In my story I’m eliminating all clichés in my story so it’s hard to guess what’s gonna happen. I also have the characters with powers, but my main character has up to 3-4 powers which is uncommon but there are with-drawls to using their power. And each character represents things in life. Ex: being scared to be yourself. The point of having excitement in your life and doing what you want. Being lost and not knowing who you are, and drowning in depression. That’s what I’m trying to do with my story. Edit) also making the intro,turn and conclusion is a great idea so I’m going to write that out right now.
