5 Years After Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Is Still Struggling With Its Biggest Surprise

5 years later, the Marvel Avengers Endgame time jump is still its biggest mistake! In 2024, it’s probably safe to say that the MCU is in a very different place than it was in 2019. It can sometimes be a sobering experience to think back on the Infinity Saga, before every entertainment site made a cottage industry of wondering what went wrong with the MCU since. That’s not to say there wasn’t some enjoyment to be found in the likes of Marvel movies and Marvel TV shows like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Guardians Vol. 3, Loki, or other titles, but the quality of Marvel’s output and their overall reputation have suffered drastic shifts over the past five years.
What was once the most impervious franchise in blockbuster filmmaking has now found itself embattled with too many mediocre projects, all the setup for Kang the Conqueror possibly being derailed, and long overdue conversations about the poor working conditions for VFX artists.
But at least for today, we’re looking back on Avengers: Endgame itself, which was released five years ago on April 26, 2019. Specifically, we’re talking about how the film’s five-year time jump has had a bizarrely complex effect on the MCU, simultaneously adding weight and gravitas to Endgame while also being detrimental to the world-building and narrative integrity of the projects that followed.

If Marvel is smart, the end of Deadpool & Wolverine will be them appearing on the MCU Earth right as the Avengers return everyone, implying that the reversal of the blip is what brings mutants and other non-Avengers heroes to Earth, letting them reset the MCU post-Endgame.

@@WRDend Like it or not, they are gonna have to reboot the franchise sooner or later. The MCU can't go on without mainstay characters like Captain America, Black Panther, Iron Man and Spider-Man. It's not our fault that they didn't reboot when they had the chance with Endgame. Now we are left with them trying to squeeze whatever juice they can out of B and C-list heroes and villians.

Agreed. I've enjoyed both movies but really wished they hadn't gone down that route. It takes the weight from everything from that point onwards. Time travel and multiverse are a mistake in almost all stories and now they've trapped themselves into it.

Bad take. If there’s truly “no stakes”. Then explain Tony and Natasha’s deaths? How it led to 2014 Thanos coming back in the third act? Or how it set up both Spider-Man NWH and The Loki series (both of which had stakes and consequences in their stories too) You’re not making any sense

Agreed, the MCU should have had the original Avengers killed off in the snap and the Infinity Stones car it throughout the galaxy. The the new characters should have spent an entire phase searching and fighting over the infinity stones. Then it would have ended with the new avengers bringing back the original avengers to defeat Thanos in the final film.
