This video is a little bit of a love fest about the things I absolutely adore about living in France. I'm not talking here about baguettes, croissants and people watching - though I could - but more fundamental mindset shifts that have occurred for me as an expat living in France and the ways in which it has pushed me to become a better person.
Major life lesson 1 2:19 - live in the moment
The French aren't in any major rush to get through life. French people enjoy the moment and live for experiences and connection with others. Moreover, they prioritise this - whether that be at the individual level or the state level.
Major life less 2 - less consumerism, more experiences 5:13
French people, in general, would prefer decent amounts of paid annual leave to more money. If you ask a French person if they could earn 20 000 more per year but only have 2 weeks holidays, most would say NON MERCI. There is something to learn from appreciating the most simple things in life and prioritising time with family and less, high quality things than working tirelessly for that big fat pay check.
Major life lesson 3 - getting outside of the comfort zone 8:10
This isn't unique to France but my immersion into a new culture, new language, new mindset.. well! I learned so much by getting out of my comfort zone.
Major life lesson 4 - At ease with debating, expressing my convictions 9:44
Debate, discussion and challenging each other is a hallmark of the French culture. At first, I thought French people were super aggressive and now I join in :)

@@kickaha9843 Plus sérieusement je sais que nous avons des choses mieux et des choses moins bien qu'ailleurs, ou même des choses différentes sans être meilleures ou moins bonnes. Simplement je n'ai pour le moment vécu qu'en France et je n'aurais pu imaginer que l'écologie soit l'un de nos points forts, je suis d'ailleurs admiratif du Japon pour ce qui est de l'absence de déchets dans les rues par exemple. De même notre relation à l'argent est quelque chose que je considère plus négativement que positivement. L'argent est un objectif en soit alors qu'il ne devrait être qu'un moyen d'atteindre ses objectifs. Bref, cette vidéo me fait relativiser.

For your last point, I'd like to add that I believe it's more about education than political awakening. I know a lot of people, myself included, that will take showers or brush their teeth the way you describe it not for an ecological opinion but more because we've been taught that way. "Why let the water run if you don't use it?" in a way. Nowadays, I know the ecological impact it has to stop the water, but I never thought of it before, I just stopped the shower because my mom taught me to. And I believe - I might be wrong - that it's the case for most people in France.

I totally agree with you. This is.how normal family educates their children...don't let it.run for nothing, or keeping a lot of old stuff as they can be useful later....maybe...on ne sait jamais Most of.our grandparents have been through hard times and they know value of the.most.simple.things. Remember my Mamie who used to tell me she would never eat topinambour anymore....as it.was all she.could get a hand.on when she was young

I had have had some great experiences and some times where I have struggled a bit to understand the culture. Hey ! Ça fait un petit bout de temps que je suis tes vidéos maintenant et c'est vraiment fantastique ce que tu fais. On voit a quel point tu te rends compte de toutes les choses dans nos sociétés qui font qu'elles sont ce quelles sont. Le fait de venir de Nouvelle Zelande fait que tu vois les différences entre les différentes cultures mieux que d'autres, mais ce qui est encore mieux c'est que tu cherches à savoir, pourquoi c'est différent, pourquoi on pense ou on vit ainsi, etc. Tous les sujets que tu évoques sont très interessants. C'est vrai que ce n'est pas facile de prendre le temps de comprendre les autres et qu'il est facile de juger une autre façon de vivre et de penser. Mais si plus de monde pouvait avoir une vraie reflexion avant de prendre des décisions, nous nous comprendrions beaucoup mieux les uns les autres. Tout ça pour dire j'aime ce que tu fais et continue ainsi !!! 😘

Hi Rosie! Thank you so much for sharing this video. I lived in France for a year about 2 years ago and definitely felt very similar things. I’ve since returned to the States (where I’m from) and have since been longing to go back to France for a longer period of time. Your videos always keep me motivated to find a way to make it happen. This video in particular was a great reminder of exactly why I keep working towards these goals!

I’m from Holland and this summer I worked on a campsite in France. I can relate so much of what you said to my collegues, they were all appreciating the little things very much and were really living in the moment. I admired this so much. : The eco-friendly stuff made me think about a conversation I has with an american friend. She was living in Corsica last year and when she came over to my house, she saw that I had put my clothes out to dry in the garden. She said "People in Corsica do that too ! Why do you put your clothes out ?". At first I thought she was messing with me but then I realized she was actually very serious so I said "Well, because it's sunny so they dry faster" and she answered "Ooooh look at you being all eco-friendly" hahaha, because everyone has a dryer in their house apparently in America but it's very rare in France.

Gaëlle Delair Yes! It’s extremely rare to not have a dryer in the United States. That’s something I had to get used to living in France, but it is so much better for the environment!

Je suis assez surprise pour le dernier point. Moi qui trouve que dans notre pays on est pas si écolo que ça... Du moins en tant que particulier on essaye de faire au mieux au fil des années. Mais pour le public et les entreprises, c'est loin d'être ça je trouve. En tout cas j'apprécie le fait que tu souligne qu'en France on aime apprécier le moment présent et observer ce qui nous entoure :)

D'accord avec toi. Pour moi, si on arrête le robinet pendant la douche, ce n'est pas pour économiser l'eau et préserver la planète. C'est économiser l'argent que l'eau va coûter. J'ai l'impression que les Français n'en ont rien à faire, de la planète !

Je pense qu'elle veut parler du rapport à l'alimentation du rapport à la provenance des produits, le rapport à l'environnement et à nos paysages. La nouvelle Zélande est un pays jeune et qui importe beaucoup. Je suis d'accord c'est pas spécifiquement français, c'est un rapport à l'écologie assez européenne disons par rapports aux pays anglophones.

c'est ce qu'on peut penser en effet mais quand on voyage un peu, on voit qu'on est pas si mal à ce niveau. Exemple tout bête, en Australie et NZ quand tu fais tes courses c'est des sacs plastiques distribués à gogo, truc impensable chez nous. Pareil pour la clim. Et je parle même pas de l'agriculture et l'abus de pesticides qui détruit rapidement la grande barrière de corail... On peut toujours faire mieux c'est sûr, mais l'herbe n'est pas forcément plus verte ailleurs ;)

@@AlexD-dh2vr tout à fait d'accord. Et je confirme les exemples que vous exprimez. L'Australie et l'amérique du nord ont construit leur pays sur le mythe de l'essence illimitée et bon marché, ce qui a déteint sur leurs modes de consommation. Ce sera bientôt le cailloux dans leur chaussures. Las Vegas et dans une autre mesure Alice Springs sont des villes artificielles qui vivent grâce aux revenus du tourisme. Sorte de Dubai du désert.

@@AlexD-dh2vr En ce qui concerne les pesticides on n'est pas mal non plus. 80 % des insectes ont disparu en 30 ans avec pour conséquence une diminution dramatique des oiseaux insectivores allant jusque moins 95 % ( perdrix grises ). Et le pire est que les agriculteurs, qui sont pourtant les mieux placés pour observer le phénomène, s'en foutent royalement.

Yesssss!!!!! I had friends from the US exclaim in absolute frustration and anger that stores were shockingly not open on a Sunday. I was asked how do I get my groceries if the super marche is closed on a Sunday. I mean, there’s six other days in the week. I can pick up things here and there coming from this location or the other. I appreciate that life is focused on what’s important, what can’t be bought, what is most precious - quality of life, family, and friends. We can’t buy time, it’s the most valuable - as you appropriately said, as compared to money or things. One of the greatest lessons I learned when doing the KonMari method is that things are things, we can’t take them with us to heaven. So, it’s okay to not have to buy this and that to show my worth or what level of profession I am in. My worth is already inside me, not within my car or house. Massive lesson! Thank you for touching on this.

This is such a beautiful video, I can feel your love for our country and you really are the sweetest talking about it so thank you ❤️ btw you are so right about wasting and it's not necessarily for the environment but like when we were little our grandmas alway told us "don't waste food" because you know they didn't have much to eat during wars. I know that's not for everyone but wasting is really the worst thing you can do in France it's our biggest pet peeve. And I've noticed Americans love wasting so much that hurts me haha

I cant believe you just said its unless, Ok thats your opinion I think someday i could study something using french, meeting new different people, working in Europe (maybe) using french I think its a beautiful language, 500mi of native speaker around the world wow! 56 countries that i can communicate in french so incredibly !! I agree with everything you said. I moved to france from the US 3 years ago and I have grown in everyway you mentioned as well. I definately enjoy the slower pace and hope when we have to go back to the states that I will hold onto that. We also save SO MUCH MORE MONEY because europe is not as commercialized. You don’t have 15 stores to buy jeans or 30 furniture stores to go shop so you don’t and you are more focused on the experience. Good video. I am thankful for the lessons France has taught me

The bit about the shower made me smile. I have lived outside of France for 35 years and I did not realise that I was doing it ! But it is true ! Funny how hearing you mentioning it made me realise ! As for the heating, it is also true... I will add a layer of T shirt or jumper, but keep it down to around 18 C.

Love your videos! Would it be possible to do a 'what I eat in week' in Paris video? I've read and watched so many things that speak about the French cafeterias at work and would love to see what they do serve. Also, what types of meals you and your partner make for dinners etc. x

We eat food. Hah ! Let me tell you my latest favourite reciepe. It is vegetables with chicken in the oven. for 1 person. You slice some potatoes and 2 carrots, potatoes in 1 to 2cm thick slices and carrot about 1mm thick. You slice 1 onion. You take a chicken leg or breast. You put all of that in a deep enough oven plate with a bit of salt. The plate really depends on how much you want to make at once but it must be deep enough. You prepare a chicken broth from a cube in a pot, like from knorr or maggi. One cube is enough, you don't need much water. Maybe half a cube is enough, usually i prepare 2 dishes at the same time with one cube in one half empty pot. Pour the broth over the chicken and vegetables untill everything is underwater. Cook it in the oven for around 80mins at 200C with the heat coming from bellow. Once cooked wait at least 20 mins to cool down. The meat and vegetables will melt in your mouth. You can try with other kind of meat, vegetables or broth if you want. Another one of my favourite dishes is potato slices and cauliflower or green bean steamed for around 8 minutes with salt and olive oil (a good amount of it, added AFTER the steaming). Add some boiled eggs (cook them before anything else) in slices in the mix and cook a crispy breaded pork chop (start to cook it right before you steam the vegetables). Eat that with a vegetable salad (tomato, cucumber, avocado, salt and olive oil is my favourite) to vary tastes and crunchyness. I live in the south of france, we cook everything with olive oil. Every.... thing. All of this take less time to cook than drive to Mc Donalds. And it's delicious.

I will have to say after visiting Paris back in July this year after they won the Football World Cup has changed me and re-booted my whole life on the French and their way of life and the fact that I married a French woman 4 years ago has been the catalyst to my own journey of all things French in this life no doubt.. 5 years wow ! I hope you've celebrated it properly. For the first point i'm surprise to hear it as I've myself been able to live the moment from when I left France to live as an Expat and I have a LOT of french friends who plan everything in their life for so long ahead! Like «In 2 year, 1 month and 3 days I want to change my fridge and have a rabbit» 😂 but you know what they say ? Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.. and it's not a french quote I swear ;) Overall, It sounds like you've became poetic.. or maybe opened your poetic side ! We can feel how much you like France and it brighten my vision of my own country so Thank your for this video ❤️

The concept of "to be" vs "to do" can also be the comparison between France and Spain. Or France and Italy. It's a matter of mediterranean cultural influence

I think I have to show that "ode" to my country to my american wife, because she still complain about everything you defined as frustrating or weird in some of your older videos, All these philosophy and value you now appreciate and undestand. Bonjour from Californie! Paris is like second home to me and your first point resonates with me a lot... I am very about the future and planning ahead and yearning at the next best thing and often, cannot simply live and enjoy the moment - which is a curse... I keep telling myself to slow down, take a deep breath, and savor the present moments - and if I can do that, I would enjoy soo much more of the great moments, such as when I am in Petra or any of the amazing places I travel to.. But instead, I always feel like drinking from a half full glass because because I'm not present at the moment..

Hi Rosie, I’m new expat in France, used to live in London for a decade but originally from Philippines. You are right being expat I find really difficult to move around. I feel so uncomfortable if I’m not with my husband, obviously I can’t speak French yet just arrived a month ago but I’m pushing myself really hard to learn French. My husband is French but we speak English. The other thing is finding a job is really difficult even though I have qualification and reference. I really need to work coz I’m bored for doing nothing.

That's one of the most interesting videos you've posted Rosie, I wanted you to keep going and going. Really fascinating to see your own culture thrown into stark relief against another and see that what you take for granted as "the norm" is in fact cultural. (OK I'm Australian with NZ connections but seriously the similarities between Aus & NZ far outweigh the minor differences, that's why we're always teasing each other about accents and Aus's crap Rugby team 😉)

I cried a little bit, this video made me understand more than ever that I am so French, and I want to go back to France. The Netherlands is great, I’m born here (my parents are French), but I just feel more like myself in France. I feel more at home there and I want to live there, but I feel like I don’t know how to get back there.

I have never heard someone that gets what is it to be French , "the frenchness" as precisely as you do in this video. You are one clever and insightful person. @@NotEvenFrench I've done a survey of my friends (US and Australia) and it's apparently a thing. I'm mind-blowing I have never even considered leaving it on because why would you? I guess you learn something new every day (someone said that it was because of the warmth, but I just put the bathroom heater on for that)

Well, I just discovered your channel and can't help but feel proud to be french :D It is absolutely awesome that a Kiwi loves France so much and you are doing us extremely good advertising ! ;) I spent a year in New Zealand, I really loved the landscapes and the people are just so so nice (and "serviable"), but(sorry, that my critical sense coming back) really, we figured out that it is not the Green country we were thinking. (Debate mode : on !) The houses are not well isolated (We lived in Auckland for 3 winter months and the rain made the house so damp!), your heaters are mostly old electrical machine, you don't have common heater system (for the whole house), we saw lots of people driving fuel-hungry monsters going to the 5-min-walk-away mall...BUT, and i really admire your country for that, you don't have any nuclear plant. Your power is mostly hydro or geothermal produced. NZ has a long way to go about being greener, but I think you are on the right path. (Debate mode: off) Sorry that was a random comment with a bit of a debate in it, just to give my opinion as i am a total stranger and just discovered you YT channel. I hope you'll enjoy France even more, and go back and teach Kiwis some new tips. (And do the same from NZ to french people!)

Very cool to see what good you got from French culture ! I would nuance some things though. The heat and water saving is mainly for reducing the bill as much as possible unfortunately. The ecological thinking is growing yes but it's still coming from people that are already comfortable with their life. And yes if you can overcome French administration, you can do anything xD

that's not entirely true. Have you heard of "Les Licornes" (= unicorns)? This is a movement that started on social media in which people try to help each other realize that budget and ecology can go hand in hand through the spectrum of minimalism

I am so surprised by your last point ! I never thought that other countries would 'waste' water and electricity like that ! (no offense I just think it's "funny" in some way lol). That's something we learn as children here and I don"t even consider France as the best country regarding ecology ^^ Btw it's so good and heartwarming to hear someone being happy in France. We have a beautiful country but as we're French we never see the good aspects of it you know haha ! I hope you'll have many other great times and memories here ! :D

I'm french and I live in Toulouse. I'm totally in love with this city. But the place you want to live in depends on your preferences. For instance, I love Toulouse because scientifically speaking there are lots of businesses interested in space and space exploration and I like how people are more relaxed and everything. You can go to Montpelliers too, I don't really know this city but it seems like a good place to live

Hello Luca, It depends on what you want if you look for a region to live : - calm & nature or cities agitation - food, wine , cheese - mountain / sea - urban / rural - event , culture - foreign border proximity (swiss ? italy ? spain ? germany ? belgium ?) - hot / cold temperature etc etc A Bientôôôôôôôt ☺

My friend (she has Dutch origins & family ) invited his friends in Savoy 2 years ago. We spent 1 week in a chalet (typical wood house in the mountain) to celebrate the new year, they discovered ski and walk and we did lot of winter recipes with cheese and crêpes, they fall in love with it lool It was a really good time to meet them ☺

I would recommend Lyon. Great job opportunities, laid back city but big enough not to get bored. A lot of nature around if you enjoy outdoor activities, but also culture, architecture, sport, gastronomy, History, modernism.

Go west. This is were quality of life ( prices, environement, cities. ) is the best. Cities like Rennes,Nantes, Bordeaux,Toulouse. But there are also plenty of average cities like Angers, Quimper, La Rochelle..you can have big and nice houses affordable and nice places to live around.

It's easy to reduce the amount of water and energy you use in taking a short shower. Don't get me wrong; I love having long showers too, but switching water on/off can be a good way to save both, which is great for the planet and for the budget.

I'm from Paris, the salaries are not so low that you cannot do anything with your money, let's not exaggerate... Plus it 's very affordable to do your nails , go to the beautician, etc... because there is more competition in Paris , I live in Dublin, Ireland and here yes it is really a luxury to do your nails, etc... as there is less competition because it's small, like New Zealand I guess, otherwise it is totally affordable to do all these things, it's the first thing I do when I go back to Paris. We're also very lucky with the medical system in France too!

Interesting that you find Parisians unhurried and not materialistic! They definitely don't have this reputation in other parts of France! Otherwise I agree with a other of things, including the part about enjoying your Sunday as a family and not as a consumer. The sad thing is that it's changing. Yesterday I saw that a supermarket in an area where I used to live is now open 7 days a week 6am to midnight. My first thought wasn't "great we can go whenever we want" but "what about the employees who will be away from their family on a Sunday or in the late evening ? Who will help the kids with homework ? Who will read them a story and kiss them goodnight in bed?"

11:26 but why would you keep the water on when you're trying to wash yourself? Unless you've got a combined bathtub & shower, there's not really room to wash yourself properly without the water rinsing the soap and bubbles that you're trying to use to get clean away if you don't turn the water off. Besides, if you're not using something, you turn it off, right? You wouldn't leave the tap running while you do your teeth, or leave lights on in the day or an empty room, or leave the tv on if nobody's watching it etc.
