Katie, I have never seen you look so happy that smile was worth a million dollars. Now I see you being a lumber jack and just having a ball cutting trees. I like that you two are cleaning up all that underbrush that will help if God forbid there is a fire. There is a implement for the tractor called a ground plane, not too expensive and would help immensely in your yard and other work. Katie, If you step to the other side of the tree, you will find it easier to hold the chainsaw while cutting. Secondly, do not run to the back side of a falling tree. get away at a 45 degree angle from the direction the tree is falling. it is possible for a falling tree to kick backward from the stump. Overall, good job for you first tree.

When handling a chainsaw, it is good to wear protective clothing to avoid accidents

Hey Greg, If you use a squirt of just straight deisel fuel it will take the pine/ fir sap off of your saw blade so nicely. Give it a try my friend, it works great! Sincerely, the old Montana cowboy Frank Scherping😅

You guys have a beautiful place. Once Katie gets a little more experience with that chainsaw the trees will be in trouble, she likes a neat area and she doesn't like fire fuel near her home.

Clearing the pathway and reducing the fire risk is a wise move. Katie's smile when the tree fell was immense. Your coaching and encouragement Greg was worthwhile. For reducing the oversized stump, I thought Greg was going to horizontally cut away the edges using a chain saw on a track. Then take to the saw mill. The new blade made a huge difference. I know it takes longer than burning but chip or mulch as often as you can. Continue to repurpose as much of those smaller dead or cut branches into usable soil building material. Once landscaped, it will come together beautifully.

Ms Katie you are the best logger and land clearer I have ever seen and so pretty too. Y'all are working hard and having a good time . Just remember to look up and run like heck. A good timber faller has (A) two escape routes, (B) always looking up for a "windowmaker", (C) run the other way. Nice job on your first time out. Greg, sure am happy to see you're satisfied with the new Blades. I've been counting your steps with the older hand sharpened blades vs the new "Silver Tips" blades and your 43% faster. As one who lost some of his hearing in the 1960's and now had hearing aids, you might think about adding hearing protection while using the chain saw.

Greg, I noticed one of the dogs chewing on a bone. I sure hope is wasn't from your back. After watching you battle the beast, here's another suggesting. Find a used cant hook with an eye in the opposite end. Fund a piece of 1/2 " cable. You'll need a couple of cable clamps, and bread in "Farmer's eyes in both ends. on one end, don't forget to thread in the cant hook. The next time you encounter a "beast" use the "cant hook cable to roll over your log with the tractor on the mill. Gene

I worked at an industrial steel yard in Seattle for almost a year. We used the same type of blades; when it broke it was a crisis to get the new one on fast because we were so busy. but I remember we were always told if it breaks on the weld, we get a free blade to replace it. love that you get your wood from your land

With your landscaping... I'm sure you know this... but always try to make a small drainage ditch on the uphill side (especially when the road is next to that elevation change) Drain the water to a point where you can put a culvert pipe in to let it go further down hill. Yeah... I'm sure you know this... but I can't tell if that area is going to be part of the driveway/parking area or not.

You could gather big boulders to line that hillside with so it doesn't wash downhill. Looks clean.

Excellent work breaking down that monster log. I think the big/flare end is called the horns.

You can wrap a tow strap around the large logs and use your forks to roll it on the mill.

Very nice job on those 2x4s. Fence is coming together nicely. Safety equipment definitely a must, however I noticed no hearing protection on Katie's ears while running the chainsaw. Probably should wear some and save the hearing.

That big log was deceptive as it didnt look that big until you put it down on the mill and came up to it, well done and thanks for taking us through the process it is really interesting

I have seen several channels spray regular diesel in the saw blade to clean it while cutting, noting that it was the cheapest option to keep the blade clean. No need for expensive spray cans

One suggestion. I have a new holland 35hp tractor similar size to your kioti. I made a 1200 lb concrete and steel counterweight for the rear end, it was night and day difference. I can load a full bucket and not have a bouncy rear end. The hydraulic pump will stop lifting the bucket before the rear tires come off the ground now. Off grid in northern BC.

Nice job with the milling and the tractor work doing the leveling, Greg. Kate, great job with the weed-whacker [chain saw] too! Other protective lumber work gear: Ear protectors, helmet, shin guards, or lumber work strap on 'pants'. And, steel-toed boots are another safety requirement, of course. And, most certainly, wear a long-sleeved shirt, too. I ended up with a major case of poison ivy when we were building our home in Northern Virginia a couple decades ago. We had acreage that had too much poison ivy growing up trees, and even rooted onto the trees. The chainsaw was really helpful, but there were times when I had to go with a solid blade on a heavy duty weed-whacker to cut the vines, but the sawdust would still fly and inevitably get on my skin someplace. I learned the hard way about long-sleeve shirts. - Please learn from my mistakes... unless PI & PO (poison oak) don't grow there [?]...)

Fencing looks great !

When you sharpen your blade you also need to set it. At least every 2-3 sharpenings. It'll cut so much faster. The Silvertip blades are the economy blades. The high-alloy steel ones stay sharp much longer. Carbide are even better.
