In this video we see what happens when a .50 bmg round is set off outside the chamber of a gun. Will the brass shell make the bullet travel at a higher velocity and be more dangerous than the shotgun shell?

When I was in the Navy we had to watch ordnance safety films a lot, and in one particular film a civilian tech rep at Pax River Md was loading a 20mm round into a hot lab test barrel by hand to measure cookoff times. As the civilian rep was inserting the round into the hot barrel the round went off, during the slow motion replay all you could see was an empty left sleeve of his long sleeve lab coat wrap around his back from l to r.. The after accident report said he lost his entire arm from just below the shoulder, lost hearing and vision in left ear/eye, perforated left lung and kidney. Guy was lucky he survived!!!! Seeing those rounds peel back like they did brought this memory back. When dealing with Ordnance safety rules are written in blood.. literally.

Dylan Grafftey-Smith if you're replying to me, your claim is false. And instead of telling you it's false I'll tell you why. See, when WW2 started Americans and British had only 1 kind of shell: Armor Piercing and what it does is simple, go through armor. If it goes through, it would damage the crew by the shrapnel from both the armor and the shell left overs. In contrast, Japan, Russia, Germany, and France had Armor Piercing High Explosive (APHE) and it did the same thing as the AP except it had a set length of MM that the shell would explode at thus being more effective at both disabling a tank and the crew. If the shell surpassed double the armor it was supposed to penetrate, it would explode Inside the tank.

All brass cases are "chamber formed" when firing, meaning they expand until they can't anymore and then the excess pressure forces the bullet down the barrel. That's why the first stage in reloading is resizing the brass to factory spec. If there is no chamber, the full force of the explosion is applied to the brass until it fails. Sometimes hot loads (that's for you, OG) split the brass case even inside a chamber. Oh and putting one of these inside a pipe could be considered manufacturing a firearm, which I think you mentioned in another video. Don't do it. Especially in the socialist Republic of California.
@RangerOfTheOrder
@RangerOfTheOrder 6 жыл бұрын
LoneWanderer360 Idk about the SRC, but iirc according to federal regulations, you can make your own firearm as long as it's not an SBR, automatic, etc. I could go to the Homeless Deathspot and build a shot gun from pipe fittings.

DrivenByDiamond You're right, but I wouldn't do it in Commiefornia. You forget to dot an i or cross a T and they may look to make an example of you. Why isn't your plumbing pipe serialized? Where's your triple redundant safety? Why isn't your firing pin microstamped? Who knows how far they might take it.

And one of the reasons why brass is so good for casings is because it's thermoelastic properties allow it to quickly shrink back down just enough to be easily ejected and then as said they're soft enough to cold-form later in a resizing die.

Water ricochets are dangerous as hell. Once I shot at my grandmas pool and the damn thing ricocheted and hit a door only 2 meters from her. On a farm, the other worker (18yrs old) found a full size rifle bullet (not sure what caliber). He wanted to empty the powder out and make a necklace out of it. From the workshop, I heard the sound of a power tool, then suddenly a deafening bang followed by silence. I ran over to see what happened, and found him standing in front of the vice, holding the electric drill in front of him. He was staring at the vice and looked white as a ghost and in utter shock. He slowly looked over at me, then back at the vice. So I also looked at the vice and saw shredded brass all over, with a bullet held in the jaws. After asking what happened, he explained he was trying to empty the powder, so he tried to drill a hole... right through the primer cap.

Fun fact, I had an accident sort of similar to this with an 8mm mauser round. Shrapnel from the casing went into my neck on the left side and grazed my carotid artery. Seeing danny show that big piece of brass that separated from the case gave me the chills. The incident was 100% an accident and I was the only one injured thankfully. But yeah. Brass in the neck doesn't feel so good. Was a pleasant surprise to see Danny again. Rip buddy

The story Matt told you about was of an army private who used a .50BMG cartridge as a hammer to drive a nail, and it's a true story, you can find a picture of what was left of his hand after he hit the primer, looking kind of what you would expect someone's hand to look like after a tiny bomb goes off while grasping it. Don't use explosives as hammers, kids, even if that goes without saying.

I did this test about 50 years ago. I was 12. I put glue on it, laid it down, and lit it. The case went farther than the bullet. Neither could really harm you. It needs a barrel to trap all of the explosion completely behind the bullet to get full power. Gas will escape the easiest way it can go. Path of least resistance.

Hmm... Interesting how the bullets hold themselves in a (suitable) gun chamber but it will not hold if it's fired without. Any scientists that want to elaborate? I'm curious. I have my assumptions but I'm no adult.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but are you wondering why the casing doesn’t explode in a gun but it does outside of one? If so the reason it doesn’t explode in a gun is because the barrel forces the explosion in one direction, while outside the gun there is nothing to contain the explosion and the casing is weak so it goes first.
@longbow6416

Dittos on Fabricated Phoenix, barrels are 'proof tested' to safely hold the pressure the bullet's explosion delivers. Picture this: you put dynamite in an empty oil barrel then bury the barrel in a slightly bigger hole. Then ignite it, the oil barrel will 'stretch' to the size of the hole. Same thing with a bullet case in the chamber, the case will actually press and form itself to the inside of the chamber, but it can still be pulled out. Look at a 7.62X39MM Soviet bullet, the case is tapered for easier extraction after firing

Before watching this video, I knew a bit of what would happen. In my armory, we used to have a safety picture warning of what not to do, showing the mangled hand of a soldier who had used a live round as a hammer. The round went off, and the casing exploded like a grenade. I have also seen the damage to a M2 which was only slightly off on the headspace. Fortunately, the person firing the weapon was wearing eye pro, and was uninjured.

In Chuck Yeager's biography, he was a bit of a hell raiser. At the time he was a P51 pilot in England, the huts the pilots lived in had coal burning stoves. He would go into the pilot hut with several pilots gathered around the stoves for warmth and throw a handful of 50 cal rounds in the stove and laugh as everyone dove for cover.

Incidentally the guy who was injured after he had a .50 BMG go off in his hand was using it as a makeshift hammer to dislodge a pin or something, was either army or marine corps. but the report went into some pretty gnarly detail.
@orangejoe204
@orangejoe204 6 жыл бұрын
Google "Weapons Safety Message 10-2" and you'll have all the gory details. Dude was Army deployed in OAF, no mention of MOS or unit, round was an AP-I silver tip. At least half the gun owners I show it to say "NAW, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!" and then this video shuts them right up. Any round will blow like that if cooked off in a fire, but only .50BMG has the pressure to serve as a mini-grenade. In fact, the combined weight of all the smokeless in there is roughly equal to the Mark 2 pineapple grenade, which (to save TNT flake for larger shells) was initially loaded with 324 grains of "EC Blank" super fast double-base. EC Blank is naaaaasty shit and the bane of dumbasses everywhere. 10 grains in a .30-06 case with a teeny cardboard wad on top produces a report that is actually slightly LOUDER than USGI ball .30-06 and makes an outstanding signaling cartridge... if you're shooting it from a Springfield. Semi-auto rifles didn't exist when it was invented, and firing a single EC Blank loaded .30-06 in a Garand (which happened quite a bit) would instantly destroy the gas system and splinter the top handguard. God only knows what carnage would have erupted when somebody mixed up the coarse-powder blanks for grenade launching on the M1 with one of the old EC Blanks and tried to shoot a grenade off the end... I'm thinking body parts. And that's 10 grains. Now imagine 324 grains in a cast iron pineapple. Serious shit.

I have a little lump in my chest, I successfully pried the primer out of a few 12 ga shells when I was a dumb teenager. Being a dumb teenager, I decided the best thing to do was to put them on a vice and hit them with a hammer. Realized some time later I was carrying one around in my chest... Had a CT scan a few years back, didn't get hot or move during the scan so I assume any actual metal has long since been broken down and absorbed.

I heard the story when I was in the army. Its was a soldier that was trying to put the pin in a mount for a M2 .50 cal machine gun, and the pin was having a hard time going in and he decided it would be a good idea to grab a .50 cal round and use it as a hammer. On post they posted and hung up flyers about this with a pic of his hand, and let me tell you it was not pretty.

When I was a kid I had an empty .50 BMG cartridge and the pulled bullet. This was back when cap guns and caps were popular. I never tired of finding new ways to explode more caps at once. One day I had an idea to put a mass of caps inside the cartridge, slide the bullet in through the neck to rest on the caps, and then drop the thing base-first onto concrete. Got a few satisfying bangs and then decided to add more caps for a bigger bang. Did exactly the same thing, sitting in a chair and dropping it between my ankles. Except this time there was a deafening roar and hot gas jetted out of the case mouth and straight into my face. I was dazed and my ears were ringing. I knew exactly what had happened. I'd noticed the primer didn't have a dent in it, but as a 10 year-old kid never understood the implications. If I'd known the primer was live I'd never would have been setting off caps practically right against the primer, especially with my head right above the shell. Learned that a .50 BMG primer is a force to be reckoned with.

When a fire went through a town here in Calif this last year, it hit a gun store and the rounds cooked off for quite a while. If the shell is heated to ignition, would the result be the same? I saw folks standing about a block away watching the fire. Safe or not?
@mlgjan5046
@mlgjan5046 2 жыл бұрын
safe, watched a video about that, apparently rounds not sealed in chambers are harmless, the casing is the fastest thing cuz of it being lightweight and the bullet is just thrown away, can't even go through plywood. when it's sealed and in a barrel it expands straight giving the bullet very high velocity
@AffordBindEquipment
@AffordBindEquipment 2 жыл бұрын
@@mlgjan5046 agreed. but if 10,000 rounds of ammo are going off and casings flying everywhere, is it safe? Not sure I want to stand around a watch. And if the mass behind the casing causes it to remain stationary, what happens to the bullet? Theoretically, it may be safe but then plane flight is really safe except when it isn't.

I had a 7.62 round cook off 3 inches from my left band while firing the Browning GPMG. At the range. It was a live round laying in the brass pile under the MG. Left there by the team that had fired before us. My left hand was holding the traversing bar as SOP. So Rapid Fire! BangBangBangBangBOOOOM!!!! Empty casings everywhere. Felt like all my fingers had been given a sharp blow with a stiff board. Finished the belt. Probably 150 penetrations of unburned powder. Minor bleeding. War Wound my Sgt called it. Lol No treatment required. Still have a few left you can see. 40 years later.
