I have a visual disability which means I can barely go anywhere since I can't safely drive, cycle, or even walk alone. I wish my city would get good cycling paths or something to travel by- its only so dangerous for me because we have to go alongside cars here. Even tho I essentially HAVE to carpool because I can't drive, I'd really love to walk or cycle to closeby places without risking my life. Would help with the autonomy thing too...

As well as only washing clothes when dirty, same applies to humans. I’m not suggesting we should all be gross and stinky but it isn’t always necessary to have a long bath/shower and hair wash every single day. Short showers, leaving hair an extra day, washing body using a sink or two of water and a wash cloth saves so much water. A few years ago we had a family competition. We started showering with the plug in and measuring how much water was in the bath at the end. The goal was to use less water than anyone else. It was really eye opening to see how much water was used when having a leisurely shower. I try to be as fast as possible. Another idea is to have a bucket in the bathroom and collect the water that is wasted while waiting for the shower to reach temperature. Use that water for house plants or pet water bowls or to water the garden rather than just let us run down the drain.

I could not possibly wash my hair every day, I have very long+thick hair so I only wash it every one and a half or two weeks or so.
@kaamos1243

I agree. I wash my hair 2 times a week and usually, those are also the only showers I take in a week. Of course, if I am absolutely sweaty I take a shower besides that, but I try to keep it short as possible (2 mins or so). Sadly people think I am gross, because I don't shower every day :(

Thank you for mentioning picking up trash! My son and I committed to 20 min a day and we ended up just forming a habit. We now pick up trash any time we walk and we walk all over when we have time! I have this theory that people will litter less if it's clean so cleaning up the streets will actually make them more likely to stay Cleaner! May sound silly and simple but we see a difference in our neighborhood for sure. If everyone did just a little bit... what an impact

@@cassienester1187 how do you do this?
@cassienester1187
@cassienester1187 3 жыл бұрын
So I used really thin sheets of cedar. My husband likes an occasional cigar and when you buy one, sometimes they give you cedar to light it with, it's usually stripped from the cigar boxes I believe. So they are probably about the thickness of construction paper and were very easy to snap into the right sizes for wicks. Then I just let them soak in a little oil, I used olive oil. Then once they've soaked, you let them dry before making your candles. I did look this up before attempting it and there were several people that said this method didn't work for them. I really believe it was the type of cedar I used that made it successful. So if you have a place near you that sells cigars, you may be able to go ask them for a piece a cedar. I'll try to find the article I read and link it for you.

Reusable produce bags. Can be small mesh or cotton bags. I've had mine for years but even the employees at Whole Foods from time to time have never seen them so I guess some people don't know about them. You mostly use them when purchasing your produce instead of using the plastic ones you were referring to but I also use them in the fridge to help organize. The cotton ones are great for things that like it dark like mushrooms or onions on the counter. I also use them when buying package free bread but it does go stale super fast if you leave it in there. They are also great for buying things like nuts, pastas, rice, etc and they don't really need to be tared beforehand since they weigh so little. They're even great to use as packing cubes when traveling to keep things like socks and underwear or cords tidy. I know these types of things take more resources to produce but given how many ways you can use them, I think it's worth. Thanks for another great video!!

You mentioned this in your video, but I truly believe that we all need to vociferously say a big polite “NO, Thank-you” to free stuff. Most people just throw all those free crappy little gimmicky things in the garbage… perhaps by saying “NO, Thank-you”, we might be educating the givers of free stuff to stop this practice. Great video Gittemary, it is full of awesome tips that are simple, practical, and best of all… do-able 😎🌀💙Ⓜ️ary

One more could be to not let your electronic devices charge overnight. This damages the battery of your devices and therefore reducing its lifetime. You could also use a smart plug to indicate how long you want your devices to charge to control that.

I really like how in a few videos I've watched you accept take out as a normal thing people do and can do while trying to be sustainable. Way too many zero wasters just say...don't eat out as much. Which isn't something most people do 100% of the time so making the most out of the containers or cutlery or napkins is good advice. Same with buying discounted veg that's wrapped in plastic. My local grocers is generally really good about low packaging and they sell at a discount heaps of 'imperfect' produce but their really discounted stuff is all wrapped in clingfilm. I figure it's better to save money and the produce from going to landfill and accepting the plastic.

I waited a week before getting a silicone baking form for bread, cake banana bread etc and it was so worth it because now I can just bake my own bread, bake cake as a present for my friends, get rid of old bananas from my roommate by making banana bread and literally mixing yoghurt with flour and yeast to make some weird ass yoghurt bread and I can just cube old bread and throw that in the oven and put that in salad. It has payed off so well. Other times I have bought mini cake forms and I have not used them a single time and I am angry at myself for that. I hope to use them at some point to make little fruit cakes this summer

Think about where you store things - I have a strong bag I was given for glass recycling, and it lives in the boot of my car, so when we take the dog out as a family, we park near the bottle bank and throw the glass in there. I make sure I have a few bags in my handbag, so I can give them to other people if they need them - we sometimes have free food at church eg bananas or bread rolls that are past their best before, & having cloth bags means I don't need to take a plastic bag & nor do my friends! When you do have to get something to replace a broken item, think about why it broke & how to avoid this - I got a stainless steel cafetiere to stop breaking the glass jugs of the previous ones I've had...

1. Reusable water bottle + tap water 2. Repurpose glass bottles from purchases as water bottles (try not to reuse plastic water bottles as they can leak chemicals into the water overtime) 3. Use a tote bag 4. Don't put produce in grocery store plastic produce bags 5. Carry a spoon, fork, or spork in your backpack (can be one you already have) 6. Repurpose glass bottles from purchases for storage 7. Make at-home cleaners instead of store bought cleaners 8. Bring home and use restaurant napkins 9. Use solid shampoo and conditioner bars 10. Use reusable menstrual products 11. Use washable cloths instead of paper towels 12. Get a protective case and screen protector for your phone 13. Store lunch in a lunch box and use the lid as a plate 14. Get a bidet attachment or portable bidet 15. Wrap your lunch in reusable containers (like cloth) 16. Change to a renewable energy supplier 17. Turn off the lights when you leave a room (when you're the only one there) 18. Be mindful with home heating systems and AC (wear temperature appropriate clothes instead of/with them) 19. Designate a drawer for things you want to reuse 20. Turn off the water faucet between dishes/brushing teeth 21. Get a water-saving faucet attachment 22. Find out local recycling rules 23. Make more efficient home recycling systems (like compacting boxes) 24. Look at secondhand items/furniture options before buying new 25. Organize your fridge to avoid food going bad 26. Make room in your kitchen for regrowing fruit and veggies 27. Make a low-effort outdoor home composting system 28. Inside composting takes more effort sometimes but is a good investment 29. Mostly get natural materials over synthetics 30. Get energy-saving light bulbs 31. Choose bagless vacuum cleaners (also less of a hassle and saves you money) 32. Practice saying no to things you don't need 33. Spend less time online/on the TV 34. Prioritize spending time in nature or just generally outside 35. At night, think about if you need any reusables the next day 36. Make a list of 10 sustainable goals you want to achieve 37. Pick up trash you see on walks or at the beach/park 38. Shop local and/or in-season produce 39. Choose plant-based options at restaurants/getting take-out 40. Use said dishes as inspiration for homemade meals 41. Make recipes without meat or dairy if it includes them 42. Vote for the most sustainable policies that you can 43. Sign petitions to hold companies accountable for their unsustainable actions, laws, and products 44. Meal prep (can save time) 45. Only wash clothes when they are dirty 46. Get your bills paperlessly 47. Drink water over sugary drinks and whole food snacks over heavily processed foods 48. When ordering foods, request not to get sauce, cutlery, chopsticks, or other disposables 49. Ask for no straw when ordering a drink (if you can) 50. Store food properly/optimally to make them last longer
