One of the largest commercial centers in west Los Angeles, the 3rd Street Promenade in Downtown Santa Monica hosts hundreds of businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, theaters, and social space. Also within the promenade proximity are the iconic 5 and 9 story high public parking lots, which house 5-10 dumpsters each and are used for promenade trash and recycling. These dumpsters are emptied daily in the early morning beginning around 7am. Unfortunately, many of the people responsible for taking out the trash either chose not to or don't know where to place the rudimentary recyclable materials like boxes, which is unfortunate because each trash dumpster contains heaps of valuable recyclable material.
In this video I rode to the 5th and 6th floors of various parking structures to get perfect and unique hopper shots of Santa Monica's CCC Amrep front loaders early Sunday morning.

IDK why but that little buggy thing at 0:07 made me lol. Great video, these are some of the best hopper shots ive seen. Camera work was awesome. Recycle was my favorite, cause hardly anything stuck on top of the truck and contamination was little to none. But trash. *sighs* There was so much more of it, not to mention the immense waste of cardboard, and plastic. There were tons of buckets, plus those dumpsters almost full of bottles/jugs. Almost 1/4 of the garbage truck's load looks like recycling. AND THIS HAPPENS EVERY DAY???

Lol that's one of their little street sweepers. Thanks for the kind words! Sometimes I guess its better to have contaminated trash than recycling thats contaminated until its un-recyclable. But still I agree they need to do a much better job sorting. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday are the Promenades heaviest days due to weekend crowds so I would think it isn't this bad on your average weekday. I have half a mind to submit this to the city to give them a wake up call.

Really cool video. I'm not a huge FL fan but I enjoyed every second of this. It's truly a shame too see all that cardboard in the garbage, although what was recycled looked pretty clean. Does SM have any commercial food waste/organics programs? I truly have no idea how possible it is, but any other footage like this of other trucks and companies would be greatly appreciated. Awesome work, this one's going straight to the favorites.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed! SaMo has commercial food waste and organics but its optional for some supermarkets and large restaurants, though I know of a handfull that are required to have a brown dumpster or two.

Yeah! After watching Tonys video a couple of weeks ago, I was wanting more of this! You got some really great shots! With 5-10 dumpsters at each stop going everyday, it makes me question though why they didn't invest in compactors. Seems like it would be a lot cheaper. I'm with you and all the others though, there is A LOT of material in the trash that should be recycled! Also with all that trash being produced I think the organics law would apply to them, but seeing that they can't even recycle right, SM probably wants to avoid the hassle with all the contamination.
@socalgarbagetrucks2585
@socalgarbagetrucks2585 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Really happy you liked it! Compactors would be a good idea but the narrowness of the alleys and low clearance under the structures would prevent that. SaMo has an organics program but only applies (optionally) to select restaurants and supermarkets. I really think SaMo should invest in an MRF

Great video Eli! These point of view and perspective videos are really amazing! I especially like seeing them from you! Was that first load recycling or trash? Nice to see the packer trying to fit all of it in there lol. I enjoyed the all the revving in between cycles and packing like at 3:57. Nice work.

Thanks dude! Glad you enjoyed it! Thats a good question - with the contamination it couldve been either. Thanks for the comment!

The revving is necessary in order for the hydraulics to work properly and generate enough pressure to pack and crush the load. If you noticed in a couple of those shots how the packing blade all but stopped in mid-cycle when he let the engine slow down. That same packing blade can also extend all of the way to the back. It is also used to push the garbage out the back when they empty the truck at the landfill or transfer station. If you could get this same view when they empty the truck, you would see the hydraulic pistons extend all of the way out.

Awesome video! I think hopper footage of an FL is way more interesting (and easier to film) than an ASL haha it always fascinates me to see how an FL packs its load. I always wondered how the packer system works and how it's set up to prevent the blade from pushing too much. I bet nowadays it's all sensors but I can't imagine how they did it back in the day before that stuff haha Anyway, any idea what those bottles at 2:02? Interesting to see that thrown out lol at 7:54, I was surprised that white box didn't fall behind the blade lol I was almost certain it would! They have Sunday collection here too, wow haha although it really isn't a surprise considering how much trash is generated daily. Awesome work!
@socalgarbagetrucks2585

Thanks Aaron! At 2:02 I think they were empty but maybe they were full - either way they shouldve been in the recycling or if full shouldve been Hazardous Waste... Thanks for noticing!!! I had that same reaction with that box being packed. As I was filming I was like "thats for sure gonna fall behind the packer... wait... yeah i knew it.... wait... NO!" My guess is weekend collection is the heaviest (Fri, Sat, Sun crowds) and weekdays is a little less because there arent as many people down there. Sunday might actually be the heaviest day.
@KevinBenecke
@KevinBenecke 7 жыл бұрын
The reason the box didn't fall behind is because the modern trucks have cameras with a monitor in the cab. The operator could see when it was about to fall behind and back it off enough for it to fall in. That's how he also knows when to pack. Back in the day when they packed, they probably listened to the engine to know when to retract the blade. When the engine would begin to labor, he would know that the blade was packing the garbage and as the engine began to labor more, he knew it was about as packed as it could get.

It looks like restaurant cleaning chemicals. The white ones with the white/yellow labels are probably sanitizers, and the one with the brown label says something "foam" which is most likely a foaming degreaser. This place probably had a crew overnight to do a thorough kitchen cleaning.

I don't know California but the people here when they pick up the trash everything gets thrown into one then once it goes off in the garbage truck they how is sorting place that sort son trash and keeps whatever can be recycled. That might be the case here I don't know that but it's a possibility

It is sickening when you think of how much garbage is generated each day. If you can just get people to reliably recycle the plastic bottles and metal cans that would be great. With the advent of the internet - recycling paper is no longer that important. plus paper is bio-degradable.

It's very sad how people are so careless and just throw any and everything away not knowing those materials can be recycled. They think once a truck picks it up, it's gone forever. There's more to that. They really need to teach people how to recycle around the world. I shake my head every time I see people that throw recyables in the trash.

Trainsandtrucks sadly, in other videos of this exact same truck, people are so careless that they throw their green waste with all the other waste. Green waste can be composted into fresh soil.

My county has a mandatory recycling program and you can be fined up to 1000 dollars for not complying. I doubt the stores train their employees much on what goes in what bin, so it's pretty easy to understand how all that cardboard ended up in the trash.
@Joshua79C
@Joshua79C 7 жыл бұрын
They could greatly benefit by having a number of stationary compactors on site and cleaning out those bins to be relabeled for recyclables, it would reduce their collection times and solve the recycling issue as well instead of it going in with the regular garbage.
