We don't often cover pre-commercial startups on Green Energy Futures but the Morgan Solar story is one we just had to share. Based in Toronto, it's developing a concentrated solar PV module that, by next year, should be twice as cheap as typical silicon PV module and twice as efficient. They do it by using common plastics to focus light onto a tiny, super-efficient solar cell, like the ones used to power satellites. Will be interesting to see the price point of high temperature PV's come down more to the mainstream consumer level that all can afford reasonably.

It's 2017 and still no any news about advanced solar cells by Morgan Solar on market. Web site looks like abandoned, Twitter last update Dec 2016.

update? the "twice as efficient" phrase came up many times in this article. but what does that mean exactly? average PV cells and modules are in the 18-20% efficiency range. so is this tech really saying 36-40% efficient? hmmmm. hope it pans out. :)

To Vitaly Borisov. They are concentrating the light to a point like a magnifying glass so yeah they do reflect but also concentrate it to a point.

+ryefry well the company won a small 10MW contract. So it is still alive. it's the last CPV company still in business

Their claims of twice the efficiency and half the cost are not even logical, nor reasonable. Concentrators cost nearly as much as just plain PV cells now. Also the heat concentrated on a PV cell will destroy its' efficiency and life. Not double it. He should have studied the subject more. People have tried and failed exactly what he is saying for many years. If they are still in business it is because he is a good salesman to gullible investors and customers.

Just looking at that video again, the concentrated cells (the PV part) seem to be attached to an aluminium heat sink on the back, this would take heat away hopefully at a fast enough rate. I'm more concerned with the fact they are using plastic as the concentrator, as plastic will fail due to UV damage over time. I'd suggest they use some kind of poly-carbonate to fix this problem, but would increase manufacturing costs significantly

the guy said the plastic is the same as the stuff used in your headlight, check out how many 15 to 20 year old cars with good headlights you see next time you drive down the road? quite a few i would guess?

Sunlight has a slightly different light spectrum to artificial light(more UV). Secondly most headlights I've seen on cars are glass.

Why these panel are so bright? As I understand they have to absorb light, but instead of that they reflect it.

its plastic, there is a fresnel lense which focuses the light and amplifies it on one spot.

The issue with concentrated solar panels is that they need a tracking system. More moving parts + higher cost.

and what happens if EMP ? Or power out at control headquarters, to create a dependence on a company after a sale is not freedom, it is a trap, same as those roof water dehumidifier water systems.

what are they going to do for money now. things like that . can be a double edged sword! like burning a candle at both ends. someone is eventually going to get burned! even though it is great. introduction to this to fast. can cause ppl to have less money. taking jobs. they need to evolve. ppl are resilient. they can take care of their self. but its harder when things happen fast! they need training to service the systems. and other income sources. it is a great thing you did/doing. if I could . I would like to something similar.
