Thank you for making me feel better about the mini split 😆…I think Brie and I would have have been in shock if we had to stay frigged all the time (Chuck says it makes him feel “alive”…he obviously didn’t grow up in Southern California!). Gabe is loving having Grumpy’s garage all to himself. He still hangs with us quite a bit in the yurt, but enjoys his alone time with skunk in his bachelor pad. We still have work to do on it, but when it is fully completed I’ll give you a sneak peak! I’m so glad you liked everything! It has been so much fun creating our home from scratch! I can’t wait to see what we are able to do with the cabin this Spring! Take care 🤗

I’ve been debating whether to spend so much money on basically a tent structure (yurt) vs. building a traditional stick-frame, insulated cabin. The yurt is appealing primarily to save a lot of time and effort on construction, plus being able to live in what I perceive as a very calming, relaxing, aesthetically-pleasing round structure with a large, central round skylight to provide a sky view and let in natural light. My biggest concern is staying comfortably warm in the very cold winters in northern Canada 🇨🇦. If going the yurt route, the biggest job will be building the foundation and insulated subfloor and finished floor. I may be off grid relying on solar/wind/micro-hydro depending on access to utilities. It will be a huge transition for me since I’ve been in Japan over 12 years, so I’m taking time right now adjusting to the idea of future yurt life.

Hi Trish!! It has been a true labor of love that has allowed me to get my creative juices flowing…can’t wait to see what happens with the cabin! The ceiling height is about 7’ tall. We decided not to have the W/D because we figured it was just temporary living for us (although we will be living here longer than anticipated since the cabin is taking longer…thank goodness we love it in here!). Once the cabin is ready we will have it in there and guest can come use it as needed. For now, a weekly laundromat trip to town does the trick!

Yes, we do have traditional electrical. In the log home we will do the same, but be set up on a generator as well and then eventually switch to solar for both places (that's what we hope for...all depends on the cost!)

Thank you! We did build it on our own, for the most part. We had help constructing the deck and putting the yurt up, but the rest we did on our own. You can see the videos on our channel, so please check them out!

They are German Shepherds, once being a long hair. We love them to pieces! How exciting that you are getting a yurt. Be sure to get one with really good insulation. Ours is not very insulted, which is why Chuck has to keep putting wood on when the temp gets to freezing. As for a wood stove, I would look for one with the highest BTU. I wish you the best of luck!!

If the Yurt is 700 sq ft for example I would recommend a wood stove that is rated for 2100 sq feet. Ours is rated for 1400 and it is not enough on cold nights. Yurts are not very heat efficient. Hope that helps.

So maximum size will be about 350sf. So a wood stove rated for at least 1200sf you figure should be enough without overheating 🥵 me. Lol 😂! Is your yurt insulated? Have you thought of ways to improve your yurt’s insulation?

We do! We moved in before the interior walls were completed in September and have been working on it since. We are thrilled it is finally (almost) completed and we can relax in its coziness!

Hi Garrett! Yes, 7' walls. We unfortunately don't really have plans to share. I had a vision in my head and then mapped it out on the floor with tape so we could see how it would look. I know there are floor plan ideas on line to search through as well. Good luck with getting a yurt! We LOVE ours :)

Thank you! The Yurt alone was $18,000 for 30ft, then we had the deck built, which added quite a bit. All the interior walls were constructed from trees we harvested and had milled, so that saved us quite a bit of money.

The yurt was made in Floyd, VA (USA) and is 30' , 705 sq ft. I would highly recommend it, but if I were to do it again I would have regular windows installed instead of the vinyl ones we have that can only open from the outside.

We didn’t find that to be a huge issue with our Yurt. Perhaps the extra insulation dampens the sound.

It could be noisy with heavy rain, but nothing that was unbearable for us!

Never heard of insulation ? , you can add sound proofing too but, as a person that comes from hurt dwellers , it's like living near a road , you learn to ignore it

We constructed the yurt inside the protection of white pines to protect from the wind. Also, because of the round shape the wind that does come in contact just blows around it.
