Labour Weekend 2018 in Dunedin marked the 50th anniversary since the first of the Dj class diesel electric locomotives, built by Mitsubishi Electric in Japan, entered service with the New Zealand Railways in the South Island, during 1968. To celebrate this important milestone, Dunedin Railways who own 7 of the class, held a 50th birthday celebration hauling excursions on the Taieri Gorge Railway. An added feature to the weekend was two visiting diesels from the Diesel Traction Group in Christchurch being recently restored Di 1102, which had just returned to mainline metals & Dg 772, plus Steam Incorporated's fleet of restored open platform carriages. Enjoy this video presentation of the event which covers the two days of operation up the Taieri Gorge Railway with a variety of diesel locomotive combinations up front, plus the 'Southland Flyer' excursion to Invercargill & return on Labour Monday with Di 1102 & Dg 772 hauling Steam Incorporated's Aa class carriages!
