Old chainsaw restoration or rebuilds have always fascinated me. I decided to buy this 50-year-old vintage Pioneer 2073 saw and see if I could refurbish it and make it look new.
I just love the simplicity of these small engine 50cc saws and I always preferred the yellow enamel chainsaws from Pioneer and McCulloch.
The process of restoring this vintage chainsaw was like stepping into a time warp; back when things were built to last. Gas powered chainsaws from the 50's-70's remind me of those old time woodsmen working hard for their families and enjoying nature with their pals.
If you like everything to do with tree cutting and power saws check out "Buckin Billy Ray" on KZfaq:

I have a Pioneer 14-50 in mint condition that needs a full tear down to properly clean and restore. You did an amazing job with everything and I'll definitely use this video as a reference since the 14-50 is very similar. Don't think I'll have to paint it which I'm happy about because the color is hard to match.. Thanks again for such an in depth and properly edited version of a complete rebuild.. Cheers

Great Job!! I have a 2073 as well as the original Pioneer case it came in. It’s in pretty good shape given it’s 50 years old. With modern high quality 2 stroke oil (Stihl, Husqvarna) you can safely run the saw at 40-45:1. The mosquitoes in your area will thank you. Not a very powerful saw but light and easy to handle for limbing and most firewood work for homeowner use. Stihl has a new filing tool that sharpens the chain and files down the depth gauges to take any guess work out of it. Works great.

*You did a great job from start to finish!* I really enjoyed this video. *Tip:* for a stubborn welsh plug: lightly tap a very sharp drywall screw into the plug until the threads penetrate it. Slowly turn the screw until the tip touches the carb body. Remove the screw and grind the sharp point off. Reinstall the screw and slowly turn it; the welsh plug will lift up with little to no damage to the carb. It works very well. Glad I found your channel. *God bless.*

Nice job mate, I think I might have a go at cleaning up my old saw now. Bit of advice, wear correct PPE with that saw as it lacks pretty much all of the safety features of a modern saw and they can be dangerous to use, not even a chain brake. Also best practice for a right handed person when starting a chain saw like that is to put your left foot on the bottom of the handle, this ensures it is nowhere near the chain or bar and your right foot is out of the way.

Great video! I have a question. On my Pioneer 1200A, the throttle linkage is fine but the part on the carburetor won't move more than a millimeter. I disconnected the linkage going up to the carburetor and tried to move it with my fingers without success. I have never actually fired up this chainsaw. It was a gift and I just wanted to clean it up and that's when I noticed the issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

@toolteardown1
@toolteardown1 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching. This is a color I chose that matches more closely the older saws (I just liked this color because of the vintage vibe). If you were wanting to find a closer match I would recommend taking apart the saw and finding the original color perhaps on the inside of the housing and having it matched.

Thanks so much, I found this color on the Arborist.com forum. It's a great place where loggers and collectors go to share their wisdom. The color is actually from some of the older Pioneer saws from the 50's and 60's. I thought it just gives it a more retro feel. Cheers!

Would like to see how u put the coil back in
@toolteardown1
@toolteardown1 3 жыл бұрын
My friend, on a wooden bench, hammer a large nail and place a plastic zap strap (closed but on loosest setting) around the nail. Lay coil flat over this and hook the end of the coil to the nail. Then using your power drill you can slowly turn the middle until the coil tightens up and fits within the zap strap. When coil is fully tight then tighten the zap strap. Slowly remove the coil from the nail (without causing the zap strap to fall off). When placing the coil slowly pull off the zap strap as you are pressing the coil down.

Did you have to adjust the carb air/fuel mix after you rebuilt it?
@toolteardown1

This carb has only the low-speed adjustment screw which I set to 1.5 turns from off position. The idle screw needed a little adjustment also. Cheers

Hi again! Today I got my little saw and it appear to be a Pioneer 1073 model. It has a label under the body. To tell you the truth there is no difference between 2073 and 1073 as I compared in Mike Acres' site. Also there is written that the intake method Is 'reed valves' but I think it is piston ported. The white plastic detail between carb and cylinder is just a manifold.
@toolteardown1
@toolteardown1 3 жыл бұрын
I think they are referring to the carb when referencing the reed valves.

@@toolteardown1 I was surprised to hear this little beast revving! It has a lack of power compared to European small saws. For now I have no bar and chain and the top cover is missing.... But I am a handyman and I will make one from aluminium or plastic. And the colour... I don't like it. Do you think it is vandalism if I paint it red metallic?
@toolteardown1
@toolteardown1 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-jo6jg3ep1f These saws are not incredibly valuable monetarily speaking so I would paint it the color you like. An aluminum cover would be very cool. Good luck with your project!

I may be wrong but I don't think the fuel line setup for the 1024 is any different from the 1023. There is a exploded view of a parts diagram if you Google: "pioneer chainsaw parts diagram"... the title of the link is "Pioneer 1073 and 2073"... You will find the connections of the fuel line on page 6 of the PDF. Hope this helps.
