Allison started saying interesting things about being into writing and stuff. Unfortunately, Tom was blinded by his unresolved feelings for Summer so he missed out on a potentially interesting girl.

When you watch the movie again you (or maybe that was just me) start wondering if you ever envisioned him going on a date with anyone else - because he's so self-obsessed and never thinks about anyone else but himself. What he wanted in a relationship, how badly he was apparently treated, how apparently nothing good ever happens to him, he's telling a relative stranger these things. I mean I guess it does count as unresolved feelings but I still think it's feelings for the Summer he convinced himself was there rather than the real Summer who made it pretty clear she didn't feel the same way about him. Allison gave him her honest opinion with a fair amount of insight and he drowned it out in drunken karaoke.

It was a date that his friends set up with her. He wouldn’t have gone on a date with her otherwise. His obsession with Summer blinded him.

Dude It was not his time to meet new girls. I don't think it's fair to call him selfish for not feeling ready to date. His friends forced him to have that date and the truth is that I have been through that situation and it is very uncomfortable. Everyone on the other hand seems desperate to justify Summer at all costs. You call Tom selfish for not taking others into account but Summer didn't care about Tom while she had what she wanted from a friend to have sex and that's it. You don't have to be very smart to look at Tom's face and see that he made a goofy face every time he looked at her and Summer was smart enough to realize that. What she did? Tell him, calm down, Tom, don't worry, maybe we can have something else, I don't know. You relax and enjoy the ride. Of course, if I get tired of you goodbye.

How can you know based on a date where he was the only one who talked. We don't know anything about her, only that she seems very smart. We can't even know if they would've fit together.

@@Romy--- Personally I don't think any relationship Tom had could've worked until he confronted the fact that he was actually a very self-centred person, and not just in his romantic relationships but also in his relationships with his friends and his family because all he ever seemed to do with anyone is talk about himself and he expects things to go the way he wants them to and if they didn't (we see this right at the start when he said that there was no chance of him and Summer happening and that Summer was a "skank" and that nothing good ever happened to him just because Summer told him in the lift that her weekend was "good") then he becomes sullen and sulky and frankly kind of childish. Until he starts considering other peoples feelings and starts to give a bit more in his relationships rather than just take, I don't think he could've had any lasting relationship. Fortunately I think he might be fixing that problem at the end because he actually listened to his sister's advice when she told him to look back on the bad things in his relationship with Summer instead of just focusing on the good as opposed to earlier in the movie when she warned him that just because Summer liked the same things he did didn't make her his soulmate and he basically ignored her or when Summer said she wasn't looking for anything serious and he as good as ignored that when he said "and I say we're a couple damn it" or later when he assumed that she was happy just because he'd convinced himself that they were happy or even in this scene when Allison told him that it sounded more like he'd broken his own heart rather than Summer breaking his heart and he ignored her and dragged her to drunken karaoke

I give points to this film for mentioning she never cheated or manipulated him despite him acting like an over the top drunk depressed ex, it hit close and I kinda really liked this criticism on how diluted a sad romance film about a generic breakup can be

After being divorced, this hits so different. When you're in love and together, it's great. Then, when things go bad and your not together anymore, you hyper fixate on every moment that "signaled" your partners disinterest or desire to get away from you. You even start making them a villain in your story. But in the end, most relationships fail because you and/or your partner were incompatible in ways you didn't notice because you were focusing on what could be or trying to be a different/better version of yourselves. You expected a different outcome and to be those people forever but after a while reality and your real selves came in and resentment started to build. "Did she break your heart or did you"? Translation: Did her behavior hurt you or did your expectations hurt you. Sounds about right 😢

People are on Tom’s side because they can identify with someone who’s goes numb when someone they love treats them like they’re not important and will dump them any second. Yes Allison is sympathetic, but Tom is guy who should not be dating and should be getting his head on straight. Tom fears anyone he dates will treat him no different.

0:59 Yeah, it is you Tom. Because you are selfish, immature and self-centred. You made up your mind before the date that you couldn't just said you didn't want to go on, you didn't ask her one question about her self, you started drinking before she got there, and when she gave you her honest opinion about the situation you ignored her and shut her out because that's what you do to everyone who doesn't tell you what you want to hear. You filled a relative stranger in on all the details of how bad she apparently was because that's what you always do you dump your problems out on everyone around you because you honestly don't care about anyone other than yourself - you didn't care about Summer, you loved the idea of her and have been bad-mouthing her every chance you get because she was honest with you from the start.

Mariusz Dos Santos I’m glad that wasn’t in the movie because I can’t distinguish if it’s him imagining all the negative parts or summer actually doing it. If it’s the ladder, I don’t think it would have fit her character because she really likes that Tom is passionate about architecture and she wouldn’t sigh at him doing that especially since she encouraged him. Just my opinion tho

@@clcp8137 That's probably why they cut it. However, it is important to establish that the film actively sought to portray Tom as the one in the wrong (which he was) so that might have been why they devised the scene in the first place: to actually set in stone the message.

I’m not sure what Allison meant when she told him that stuff in the restaurant about summer taking advantage of him. Was she just making it obvious that Tom was being selfish ?

I think that her point was that she didn't do anything terrible in the relationship, was upfront about what she was looking for, and the only reason that Tom was hurting was because he ignored her warnings and tried to be in a relationship with her.

In an earlier version of the script Tom stopped talking about Summer for 5 seconds and asked Allison about herself, she barely finished the line 'well I grew up' when he interrupted her again to talk again about summer. Tom really is one of the most selfish characters I've ever seen in a movie

I love how he does the exact same thing to Allison as Summer did to him. It’s cool when he does it, but not cool when Summer does it. Tom was being really pathetic (I’ve been there so I get it) but I’m glad he got his shit together so he could be the best partner for Autumn (hopefully)
