@@qwery486 hardly perspective if all you see is the joy of nothing. As difficult and heartbreaking as break-ups and divorces can be, I would've said it was unbelievably arrogant and self-centred rather than insightful of Tom and Summer to declare that love doesn't exist just because they lived through or witnessed a break-up and a divorce.

@@mark9294 two relationships didn't work out - and that means that no one else can be happy? That means a feeling doesn't exist? That means that something that people have fought and died for - the right to date even if it doesn't work out , the right to marry even if it doesn't work out, the right to fall in love and to be in love, things that have been fought for by interracial couples and LGBTQ couples, people who risked imprisonment or death just to meet up - doesn't exist? And either of them have the right to say that because Summer's parents divorced and because Summer told Tom that she didn't think they should see each other anymore because all they did was argue and Tom was in denial about it? I had a bad job experience and was bullied by my boss, does that mean that I go around saying that people shouldn't get jobs or talk to the people they work with? My friends stopped talking to me in high school, does that mean I go around saying that friendship doesn't exist? I've lost family relatives, does that mean I go around saying that there's no point getting to know your grandparents or aunts or uncles because you'll loose them one day? Both of my parents witness some family separation when they were younger and they both had relationships with others before they met, and they're still together. Summer's want for independence was cool, but when she said "oh come on, you don't really believe in that do you?' she sounded like she was trying to convince herself of something she wasn't sure about. Tom saw what he wanted to see and didn't recognise signs that she wasn't interested in him, and as we saw from earlier on int he movie has a tendency to become sulky and to badmouth everyone when something doesn't go his way (i.e. when Summer told him that her weekend was 'good', and he seemed to think that gave him the right to call her a slut). Sad things happen to them, and they somehow think that gives them the right to say that it can't work out for anyone because an emotion doesn't exist. That's how so.

@@mayankbaruah3997 the problem was that Tom thought that true happiness can only come from romantic love. That can help but it isn't the only place. His problem is that he's extremely self-centred and selfish and can't admit that other people might be right as well. He's had a break-up and he's taking it out on just about anyone he meets, that's not what a well-adjusted adult does. No, we shouldn't devote our lives to the idea that there is a single one but we can't just say love doesn't exist because of a break-up. don't forget, there's self-love if nothing else, and that's even more important.

If YOU REALLY want to tell someone how you feel: mom, dad, gf, bf, friend, sibling, DO NOT use the word LOVE. Try to use other words besides love and you'll really be diving deep into your feelings. It's difficult at first but with practice and new words you'll truly understand how you feel, or not feel. LOVE has so many definitions that it's now a generic way of feeling. Use other words that pinpoint exactly how you feel; only then will you be able to communicate your true emotions.
@agenttheater5
@agenttheater5 3 жыл бұрын
SO we just have to find a balance between not saying love as an automative response and not doing what they did in 'The Giver' - in that scene where he asks his 'parents' if they loved him and they told him to be more careful of his words because it's been used so often it has no meaning so a more appropriate question would be "do you enjoy me?" or "are you proud of my accomplishments?"

Very red pilled speech. I mean when I watched this when I was younger I thought Tom was just venting out his frustrations and was acting on his emotions due to his depression over Summer, but watching it again now it's a lot more than that. He makes a pretty compelling argument that love and relationships are nothing more but a product thats been romanticized into something it's not by society like the movies, tv shows, pops songs, his job. It's not about hearts and roses it's about what's sells, and he was right.

he was convinced they were meant to be and that they were in love. She wasn't. Then she met someone else and did fall in love. And then he met someone he might or might not fall in love with, or maybe he'll fall in love with yet someone else later. Break-ups and divorces doesn't mean that love doesn't exist, it just means people make mistakes, that's what people do.

These days social media is what keeps us from connecting. A person going through a hard time is more likely to have people post to their Facebook than pick up the phone. Way easier to just post "Hope things get better." or "I'll be praying for you." than to actually be there for someone! Don't post what every other asshole is gonna type up as an afterthought! Get off your ass and talk to people that might need you! Give them your time and energy! These things are infinitely more valuable than a string of text!

He's actually spot on with the Congratulations on the new baby bit. Once people settle into a domestic routine with babies and kids and all that shit, they become completely unrecognizable from their former selves. They get so caught up with their own lives that even if a miracle happened and you got the opportunity to spend some time with them, all they talk about is their fkn bathroom renovations, their children's new activities, and their dissatisfaction with their partner. The personality they once oozed is gone, their spark and lust for life and adventure is seemingly just snuffed out. Completely. That's been my experience anyway. With every single one of them. And even if you get some one on one time and talk about hanging out again, hitting the gym for a workout like the old days, or doing anything remotely interesting, within a couple of days, it's clear that they've completely deleted the conversation from their mind. There's no genuine drive, no follow through. Their minds have become 100% engrossed in their own tiny little world and they can't even seem to see how isolated, pathetic and desperate they've become. I don't understand why people choose to shut themselves off from the world like that. I guess unless I have kids of my own some day I'll never understand. I just don't know how you can possibly be happy to blow your best friends off like they're nothing, like they never meant anything at all, and just entangle yourself entirely with one single other person. Nothing wrong with a partner, and being in love, in a r'ship etc but to spend every waking minute of the rest of your life either at work or with one single other person..... It just seems unfathomably boring and empty and lifeless to me. It's not supposed to be that way. It's unnatural, unhealthy. And it makes perfect sense to me why I know so many people locked into that domestic 'bliss' who think about killing themselves on a regular basis. But they are doing it to themselves. If you cut your own balls off and happily hand them over to another person, allowing ALL of your decision making to be done by committee, you only have yourself to blame. And if you've done this, then just grow some fkiing new ones, and GET A LIFE!! Before you end up hanging at the end of a rope. The isolated, nuclear family paradigm is NOT - and never will be - the wonderful bliss that we've been conned into believing that it will. It's pure brainwashing and just another way for the super wealthy to get even wealthier. Wake up people. Take charge of your life and live it exactly the way you want to.

Well said. Although I think it’s important to keep in mind what living your life how you want and freedom play a part in it all. From Viktor Frankl’s Man Search for Meaning it reads "Freedom, however, is not the last word. Freedom is only part of the story and half of the truth. Freedom is but the negative aspect of the whole phenomenon whose positive aspect is responsibleness. In fact, freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast." I think even in whatever our pursuit will be, I think it is important to keep in mind how it will affect others. For if everyone just did what they wanted to, would we really be content with that? I mean, many people do live like that already, like the people who only keep their family in mind as you said. It is not a lifestyle I will personally admit to nor advocate for anyone else. On a side note, I always appreciate when I read someone’s thoughts that go beyond the surface level, and actually are well thought out and make people think. Thanks for sharing.

why is it not inspirational if you don't think about it to much? Some people only have to courage to go for something they actually want if they think a lot about it. Let's see now: Yes, there's romantic love - like the god of love Eros/Cupid (though granted he and Aphrodite/Venus were also seen as personifications of sexual love and desire, and we all know that sex doesn't equal love - I've known that since I was 12 when I watched 'Down with Love' (released in 2004) ). But according to the Ancient Greeks and Romans, there were at least 6 other types of love, let me check: 1. Agape: love of mankind 2. Storge : family love, natural love 3. Philia: brotherly love - like between friends 4. Mania: manic, obsessive love (not such a good one but can still happen) 5. Ludos: playful, ridiculous love, not really serious, can range from a light-hearted fling to two little kids shyly holding hands because they like each other. 6. Philautia: self-love, dangerous when it becomes self obsession but healthy when it's love and acceptance of yourself, helping you maybe to go onto other kinds of love or to make you happy even if you don't find romantic love. So that Tom is my answer to what 'love' means. Because while you're up there saying that we just go to that word to avoid saying what we really mean, you forget how many ways that word can apply to so many people. If you want to say that 'romantic love doesn't exist', then say 'romantic love', because you're not as good as denying the fact that your friends and your sister clearly care about you enough, maybe even love you enough to sit there with you and listen to you while you talk and talk and go on and go on about everything that's gone wrong in your life because of this one break up after they were willing to sit there and listen to you talk about how amazing Summer is for weeks and weeks, even if it was just about how you two like the same type of music. And both then and now they clearly cared enough about you to tell you what they think, to give you some advice or even just a few words of caution about your relationship with her whether you were willing to listen to them or not. Because that's also what love is, when you love your family and your friend enough to talk to them or listen to them about their relationship or their personal problems even if that's all your relationship has become, you talking about yourself. And maybe you should consider showing that you care about them enough to try asking them about their love life or anyone they might like or just their life in general and talk to them about it rather than just talk about yourself the whole time. No, we should not dedicate our lives to finding 'the one' but that doesn't mean we should close our hearts off to even the possibility of romantic love. That's something we know Summer learns when she meets someone she wants to take a chance with enough to marry him because even though it might not work out, it still might, and there's nothing wrong with taking that chance. And just because someone has a break-up or people get divorced doesn't mean that an emotion doesn't exist, it just means that people make mistakes, that's what we do as people a lot, and most of the time we make mistakes where it has nothing to do with love or relationships. And that's something Tom and Summer both learn throughout this movie. And just because we haven't yet found romantic love doesn't mean that the word love has no meaning, because there's always love of friends, love of family, love of doing something we're good at or love of something we enjoy doing, love of a pet, love of scenery, of art or music or movies, or of food or of one specific place. Yes it becomes dangerous if we always throw it around with no meaning, but that doesn't mean that it has no meaning for anyone or anything.

1:07 - 1:17 At this timestamp. I've seen so many inspirational/self help/motivational quotes on facebook or instagram. I think do theese users share the posts from that page let people off the hook to say how they really feel and yeah I know that social media is a very toxic environment but there's a point (in my opinion), for them (the movie) its cards but for me is quotes on a picture. Does it let them off the hook. Does the person should post his/her understanding about the quote to be clear rather than emojis? When he said "we provide the service that lets them off the hook" change that to "we provide the CONTENT that lets them off the hook" What do you think? That's how i think (for now). How bout yours? I wanna hear. NO HATE BROS & SIS. Well yes i should leave them alone with those but there should be more context to what are people sharing and for their understanding of the quote. Please comment. Enlighten me on a positive note.

But this scene needs to be understood in the context of the rest of the movie. I think Tom (Joseph Gordon Levitt) here was wrong. He's blaming the world for using greeting cards as a scapegoat to truly expressing their feelings. But in the context, Tom has just broken up with Summer (Zoe Deschanel). He's super depressed and he takes out his frustration by condescendingly "exposing" his workmates like some sort of emo edge-lord. But Tom isn't the good guy in this movie. He's a bit of a dick. He's selfish and refuses to take responsibilities for his emotions. Summer clearly told him the rules of the relationship before they started. He fell in love with the idea of Summer (the manic, pixie dream girl) and when Summer didn't love him the way he felt he was entitled to, he blames the world. Greeting cards aren't bad. Shit, if anyone thinks greeting cards are supposed to convey the deepest emotions, then both the sender and the recipient need to wake up and realise that this was a piece of paper that had a corporate, generic message printed on it. The greeting card never masqueraded to be any more. It's on us if we put false expectations on it. We fool ourselves. In love. In how we communicate to each other. Don't blame the world for giving you a way out. Blame yourself for not writing your own messages or having the honest conversations.

thank you, I was starting to get sick of people acting like tom was int he right here. All he's done since the break-up is sulk and complain and take all his problems out on everyone around him, and it's all he ever talks about to other people. And he was like that before the breakup, you heard the tone in his voice when he was talking about the 'it was good' conversation in the lift, I think he even said 'whatever, she's a slut'.

Hemant Shesh I think maybe you might have misinterpreted the ending. Why does Autumn have to be the one? Because she likes the same things? Because of the irony of her name? Nope, the cycle has started again. There’s no guarantee that Autumn is any different than Summer.

It is true that the cycle may have started again but the point of the end of the movie is that tom no longer bases his love life and expectations like those in movies like the graduate etc. he now knows that autumn may not be the one but he will try anyway
