Nice review. Let me tell you something that is quite quite shocking and a surprise. My main car is a V6 3.0 Porsche Macan S and i bought the Honda E as a 2nd car city runaround. Since purchase I have stopped driving my Porsche and I drive this instead. No lie this car has the best and most composed ride of any car I have ever owned !!

1. The paint chip on the bonnet edge is caused by lifting the wiper arm up when the bonnet is closed, the wiper arm strikes the bonnet edge. I found the same issue after I’d arrived home with my Honda e. I’m waiting for better weather to fit a small protective pad on both wiper arms to stop this happening again. It’s not just a Honda issue, it occurs with other manufacturers too. 2. The three raised ridges on top of the door handle are the contact point for locking the vehicle, not for unlocking the vehicle. Touching the three raised ridges once locks the vehicle, and if you keep hold of the handle and touch the three raised ridges again within a few seconds it activates the deadlocks. The contact point for unlocking the vehicle is under the handle, but I find that a little fiddly. Alternatively you can pull the handle out once, the window will drop, and the vehicle will unlock. Pull the handle out a second time to open the door. Obviously the key can also be used to unlock and lock the vehicle, but like you, I prefer the convenience of leaving the key in my pocket. Also note the vehicle does not auto lock. We previously had three Zoes and enjoyed the auto lock convenience. You must always lock the Honda e using either the key, or as described above. You can also lock the vehicle using the small button located within the tailgate handle, press once to lock, press again within a few seconds to deadlock the vehicle. 3. The auto pop out handles that activate when it detects the key are simply to give you access to the handle, there is no auto unlocking. The vehicle doesn’t unlock until you unlock the vehicle as mentioned in 2. above. As mentioned by another commenter, a Faraday pouch, or keeping the key in another part of the house will solve the issue of the welcome lights and pop out handles inconveniently activating when the key is detected, but rest assured, even when this happens the vehicle is not unlocked. We part-exchanged two Zoes for the Honda e and have no regrets whatsoever, and range isn’t an issue for us. In September we’ll be driving our Honda e over 200 miles to attend the Fully Charged OUTSIDE 2021 event in Farnborough, we’re looking forward to it.

1. Agree....never lifted the arm so dealer damage most likely (or the person who washes the cars on the forecourt) 2. Interestingly mine doesn't work correctly in wet weather (in the video that was a clip to vaguely demo what I meant....I have another clip where I try around 40-50 times to get the stupid thing to open....nope..no chance, in the end, all the stuff on the floor and pressed the key to make the car open, another time I actually had to go around to the boot, open that and then close it to drop the locks on the drivers door!) Most of the time ok, occasionally totally hopeless system. 3. Such a shame - a missed opportunity (seeing as there are so many options to play with on this car...having this as a selectable option within the menu or via the app would be spot on...as long as that was combined with autolock of course...which sadly isnt a thing). Niggles....got to love em.

I have to agree with you on always smiling when you get in your EV. Same here. Last June (2020) I bought a used 2016 Kia Soul EV+ (my very first electric car) without ever having driven it or even stepping foot in an electric car before because it was an excellent deal: Less than $13000 (US), less than 18000 miles and one owner, no accidents, etc. Every time I get in it I enjoy it, without fail. It is exceptionally well made: Every switch, knob, dial, lever and so on has a solid well-made feel to it, no wiggle, no squeaks, etc. Very smooth car. And even though it is only rated at 109HP it FEELS much faster (especially from 0 to about 45mph) because of the instant torque. Great car. And costing only about $2 or $3 to "fill up" is also very nice!

@@SirHackaL0t. I am not thinking about charging a car from empty to full. When I had a Zoe I found the granny cable (10A) was very useful if I visited a relative for the day to top me up enough to get home (it added 10 miles of range per hour). Cars spend a lot of time parked and I think many three pin plug type places to plug in at a destination is much better than rapid chargers where you can only park for a short time. I agree that 7kw would be much faster but if you are parked for several hours you are then blocking the charging post. I admit if you have something very inefficient you won't find 10a very useful but in many ways that is a fault with the car and even at rapid chargers it compromises that car in terms of miles added per minute. When making a stop on a long journey the faster the charging the better (at present a Tesla the only really good option for that but hopefully things will change, Tesla also have a lof of 7 / 11 kw destination chargers at places like hotels).

Can I ask a couple of questions please as I’m thinking about getting one of these. Firstly I watched another review and I think you mentioned this too but someone said when the heater was turned on it greatly reduced the battery power very quickly. How fast can this happen? Secondly it’s having the charger socket on the bonnet of the car. It looks quite vulnerable to getting wet. Any issues surrounding this please? Being a first time possible owner of my first EV can you tell me if I go to a fast charging station does it stop charging at 80% charge or can you go any higher. I heard the reason it charges to 80% on fast charge is to stop damage to the battery. I look forward to your comments or if anyone else can advise me that would be great. Thanks.

Great review and love the detail you go into, but it's really put me off this vehicle. I think people have had problems with thin paint on Hondas before, and I really couldn't be bothered with the problems the flush door handles bring, it's just form over function. Volvo have said they won't fit cameras instead of mirrors as, whilst there are small drag savings, all the processors use too much energy. This is a city car, so drag isn't really an issue (the same goes for the flush handles), but even a small increase in range by fitting conventional mirrors and naybe rducing the amount of screens, etc, would be very welcome. Finally, it's an expensive product, but not having some basic features such as split folding rear seats would really annoy me.

The auto pop out handles that activate when it detects the key are simply to give access to the handle, there is no auto unlocking, or indeed auto locking, on the Honda e. The vehicle doesn’t unlock until you unlock the vehicle by using either the key, touching the underside of the popped out door handle, pulling on the popped out door handle once (and then again to open the then unlocked door), or by pushing the rear hatch opener switch. An RFID pouch, or keeping the key in another part of the house will solve the issue of the welcome lights and pop out handles inconveniently activating when the key is detected, but rest assured, even when this happens the vehicle is not unlocked.

@Peter Copied from another reply I made: This is interesting; I am blessed to have the car parked offroad along side of house, BUT if it happened to be a street and not personal drive, it would present the handles (without any knowledge to myself) - let everyone know its now ready to simply be opened (as all they would have to do is touch the nicely presented handle and gain entry). The Zoe doesnt do this, they seem to have nailed the system (not talking pop out handles of course but the logic), that will open when button on outside of handle pressed AND auto lock once out of range (an advantage of it having 'poorer' range than the Honda E). Although! I find the Zoe annoying as it autolocks when I go to plug in the the charge cable. This happens when the charge port cover refuses to open, I get out, go around to front to find it hasnt popped open, push on it, then go back around to press the charge port flap button again and Beep Beep (loud) it locks before I can get back in. Its only niggles. But Like you say - a RFID Blocking pouch with the Honda E is really the only sure way to make sure no one has gained accesss without you realising (because like a peacock its pops handles out, turns on rear and front lights saying 'look at me, I am ready to be opened up' lol)
@sib4897
@sib4897 3 жыл бұрын
The popped out handles do not allow anyone to open the door, the car is still locked, you need to have the key in close proximity to the car to unlock it. I’ve tested it by walking towards the car until the handles pop out, putting the key down at that point which is a few feet away from the car, and then approaching the car without the key in my possession, the door handles are still popped out but I can’t unlock the car or open the door. Nobody can unlock the car unless the key is in their possession.

Thanks for the fine review, Ian. I cannot help thinking that, for the price charged, those niggles are unacceptable, most especially the lack of secure locking and the short range. In many areas of Britain doors spontaneously unlocking themselves would result in theft of, or from, the car. Insurance companies would take a dim view of that, and premiums will reflect that serious fault. Are you sure that you don't have a faulty key fob? Also, is someone's microwave oven, mobile phone, or another local radio transmitter causing the unlocking? It would be sensible to report it to Honda, because they might have a fix for the fault, if other people are experiencing similar troubles. If you think that the key fob being too close to the car is the issue, then you could try putting it inside a shielded enclosure including your microwave oven, and closing the door, as a one-off experiment,, to test the theory. If that stops the problem, then you could buy or make a small RF absorbing wallet for the key. That will shorten the fob's ange nought to improve things.

For the random unlocking / keyless entry issue, my solution was to purchase RFID blocking pouches to place the key fob in when you're at home. This blocks the wireless signal from reaching the vehicle and therefore the car stays locked even if you're standing next to the car with the key fob in the pouch. It also prevents wireless relay vehicle theft as the low life scum car criminals cannot intercept the signal, Purchased mine from Amazon (POWR 2 x Car Key Signal Blocker Pouch) and I'm very pleased with them.

The vehicle doesn’t unlock until you unlock the vehicle by using either the key, touching the underside of the popped out door handle, pulling on the popped out door handle once (and then again to open the then unlocked door), or by pushing the rear hatch opener switch. As you say, an RFID pouch, or keeping the key in another part of the house will solve the issue of the welcome lights and pop out handles inconveniently activating when the key is detected, but rest assured, even when this happens the vehicle is not unlocked. I agree with you that the only way to be certain that low-life thieves can't steal your pride and joy is to block access to the key using the pouch.

This is interesting; I am blessed to have the car parked offroad along side of house, BUT if it happened to be a street and not personal drive, it would present the handles (without any knowledge to myself) - let everyone know its now ready to simply be opened (as all they would have to do is touch the nicely presented handle and gain entry).

Ian, would you be kind enough, please, to revert to your previous car, the Renault Zoe, and (if you can) clarify something for me to do with its satnav functionality? Admittedly yours was not the latest model that I have but my problem is I'm an octogenarian technophobe - would you believe that though I've had the car ten months I've still not discovered how to switch on the radio - and later this year, Covid restrictions allowing, I want to take the care to Eire. Pursuant, tell me two things (keep it simple!): 1. without my having to do anything whatsoever to the device, will it work a u t o m a t i c a l l y over there in Southern Ireland, ie I'd hopefully be able to tap in the post codes or street names in that country in the normal way and hey presto the car would, as here in the UK, direct me to my destination OR 2. must I necessarily get someone to •reprogram• the satnav contraption in order for it to do its job in that foreign country? >Which of those two scenarios is the answer?< Over to you or indeed anyone else who's got a 2020 Zoe (Iconic in my case).

Thanks. Most kind of you. However, I aborted my early membership because one induvudual massively humiliated me responding to a question I raised about the driving function given this was my first ever ev. Not only, repeat, am I a terribly ancient technophobe but I'd never driven an automatic car before and the very thing that I wanted to avoid did indeed happen (my query at the time via the club was designed to avoid the problem) , viz on the lengthy drive home from the dealership, four times I came to a dead stop, once a mere few hundred metres into my homeward drive and once, later, in the fast lane no less. Each time I had difficulty restarting, being totally in ignorance of what to do; it's a mercy and a miracle that I didn't cause a multiple pile-up. Because of pandemic restrictions at the time of both ordering and collecting the car they couldn't let me have a test drive so, come deliverly day, I was a babe in arms as it were let loose on an entirely unfamiliar and, in the context of which I'm speaking, 'intimidating' vehicle. So, no, for the reason stated I baled from the RZOC after that indelibly memorable occurrence despite that 99% of the folks were very helpful about a number of other queries I raised.

Hi David I live in Dublin and i owned an Renault Zoe imported from the UK by Electricautos.ie The Navigation Maps covers the UK & Ireland and possibly Europe but never checked, so you should have no issues. Saying that i preferred to use my Android Phone Googles Maps for Navigation , so just make sure your Data Package that covers republic of Ireland or pick up a Simm Card from 3 Mobile , Vodaphone etc when you arrive at any phone shop. If you ring your phone provider they can also add on a Data Package for ROI as youll need that for viewing Maps, so you dont incur costly charges for using data outside uk.

It's most interesting reading about all the various problems with the Honda e. Before buying my very first ev last June I did a lot of research and it was a very close thing indeed between the Honda e and the Renault Zoe, metaphorically less than paper-thin distance between the two come decision time. I'm glad I opted for the latter and I've had no problems of any kind whatsoever, going a long way to allay my fears on the subject given Renault's appalling record for reliability and build quality. What attracted me to the Honda e was the fact that they do it in my favourite colour, yellow, plus those innovative door cameras. What hugely put me off was the lamentably small boot, the extremely poor range and that mass of dashboard screen gimmickry, which feature I opine is laughable, ludicrous overkill; stupidity on stilts. I could never live with all that stuff constantly in my face. Also, it's overpriced in my view, taking into account its shortcomings. Although no one's mentined it what further drew me away from the Japanese contender for my wallet was a smattering of press test drive reports highlighting poor graphics on the satnav map. The Zoe falls down in the satnav department via the annoyingly indistinct voice-over instructions - initially clear but when the secondary directions come on board suddenly, for reasons I'll never understand, they're muffled and hurried. Grrrrrrrrrrr!

Honda and Toyota are slow to embrace all electric vehicles. You would thing manufacturers from Japan, an island nation, would be more environmentally conscious. I guess sighting nuclear reactors on the coast with rising sea level might also be a concern. Seems like short term thinking and not worrying about long term consequences is a human trait.
