We are not sure why 500cc two-strokes are making a comeback. Maybe it is because Americans tend to want what they can’t have. There is not one manufacturer on planet Earth that produces a 500cc two-stroke engine that is meant to be shoehorned into a dirt bike chassis. And there is good reason. If you haven’t ridden a 500cc smoker before, don’t start now-unless you need a quick shot of adrenaline to jump-start your heart. But, we do know two groups of guys who are 500cc two-stroke crazy. Why do they like these big displacement engines so much? Maybe it is because they are stuck in the 1990s. Or, maybe it’s because they have a few screws loose. Whatever the case, MXA is glad they have such a passion for these archaic engines that they insisted on building MXA two exotic 500cc smokers, both in 2016 KTM 250SXF chassis’. The kicker? One is powered by a Honda CR500 engine and the other by a KX500 engine. Adam Millar, who owns Millar Racing Engineering (MRE) in Canada, is a diehard CR500 guy-and you can guess which bike he built. The second group of 500 loonies are KX500 aficionados who call themselves KX Guru Racing. You’d think that they would share a common bond, but instead they have a love/hate relationship. They both think they know which antiquated engine is better than the other, and who can build the best version of a modern 500cc motocross bike. Which is where MXA came into the picture; they asked the MXA wrecking crew to settle the argument. It was a classic 500cc build-off.

I am rebuilding my 1995 CR500 for this season of hare scrambles. Shaved the head .0030 for more compression and more snap at high altitude. No compression release. Just be a man and kick it. I have stuck the kick starter through a pair of boots though. It really pisses people off getting passed on a new $10,000 450 when your on a 25 year old paint shaker. Just hold on and twist the throttle!!

Oh nice job 👌 I race the KX 500 from 1985-1992 and I race the CR 500 1992-1999. I love both! For my late KX we use the 250 frame and suspension was Öhlins front and rear. I love the raw power the KX motor pumps out fit my riding so well! And 70+BHP is number we also had. The Honda we was need to run high compression piston to gain more mid and bottom end. So my pick as they made of same chassis would be the KX for sure 👌 Love both bike this is real manners for me and my racing have been 2 stroke miss them to death! Nice building from both teams 🙏😊 Best regards from Sweden Scandinavia/ Bjorn

@Corteum

@@vaughanhodgson 4-strokes produce a broader spectrm of torque, but they don't produce as much power overall. That's why even a stock 150 2-stroke has as much power as a stock 250 4-stroke and why a stock 500cc 2-stroke has 60rwhp and a stock 450 4-stroke has only about 50rwhp. @@Corteum yip your bang on with that thats why you would think the 450 would win has power when u want it. Jeremy McGrath said in his 500 vid he would never line up his 500 against a bunch of 450s as he wouldn't be as quick
@Corteum
@Corteum 2 жыл бұрын
@@vaughanhodgson I feel like it's 50/50.. i give a slight advantage to the 4-strokes, just because i know the power is easier to control and use on a practical level. Takes a more concentration and energy to make a 2-stroke sing. I would still pay to see that empirical testing though. Would be fun. I can accept whatever the result is. Both 4 and 2 strokes are fun imo.

@@vaughanhodgson Would be interesting with a 500cc s-stroke on a modern frame. I think that would make a big difference. Lower center of gravity for instance. It's also lighter than a 450 4-stroke. More overall power. And you can do things to increase the torque range. Then do lap times, track battles, holeshots, testing on different tracks, too. That would be fun to see.

NoNoNoNii I know the BRC well, it was an idea I proposed when I was approached by them to help make a CR500 cylinder. With less parts to support the CR, the longer lineage of interchangeable KTM parts and multiple models meant that it would be an easier model to conform to different uses with 5 transmission and 4 or more different clutch options. I do have the BRC myself, with Hygge pipe, my own custom dual 3D mapped ignition, STIC metering block, and st the moment the VF4 Reed. All performance researched components to have the best performance. I have some videos of it on my channel, many there as private which I’ll review and maybe add to the public list. -Adam

i mean not that i would by any means say that kawi is unreliable, they're a fantastic dependable company. But there's a reason why the trail riders have been hoarding these Cr500's for years. Honda reliability and parts network, and for my region specifically- affordability. i grew up riding trails in a group of 10-15+ cr500's. They always got you home, and if you found yourself lost and stuck at the bottom of something nasty, you best believe there's suddenly nothing overkill about that engine. Trust me. I've been lost in hell before lol. This is why we all want them back. Plus i mean.... they fun doe.

Funny how an antiquated engine, as you call it, is still making more hp than anything currently available off the shop floor. Even before any mod's. I never mind kick starting my KX500, that's what you do to start an MX Open class Bike. Would keep the kick-starter over more weight and more complexity any day. Honda went pretty well in this test considering the lack of a power valve. They're a good motor, that's for sure. It'd be interesting what Yamaha might have done if they hadn't pulled the pin on the air-cooled YZ-490 and progressed to a water cooled-Gen 2 500.

@Erik-rp1hi 4 жыл бұрын
@@VitaliyKhomich Both had to have fine throttle control or no hook up. Only perfect moisture content in the dirt could you dream of using it all. I do remember the 93 having a wider power band. No over revving, use mid range band and low mostly. Never have to worry about the right gear but you had to be strong. Sometimes long rides in gnarly single track cause survival mode. Ok, you told us the kawi horsepower number but not the Honda’s hp #. 72 peak for torque monster kawi 500! I’m guessing since the CR 500 HP was not mentioned is because it was probably significantly lower. My guess would be 62 hp. For the CR. Just a guess. I think they are around 50 hp stock depending on the year. I had a 1986 cr500 and it was an absolute monster, loved that bike. Thanks for the video, and with just the pure 2 stoke sound. Someone needs to put a KTM 500 2 stoke motor in an updated bike. I’m guessing with the drive sprocket and kicker being on opposite sides creates a bit of a problem! Would love to see all the big bore 2 stroke motors put into new chassis’s for a shootout!

WadeWoods stock the Cr on the dyno we use makes 45hp and 45ftlbs. The MRE bike in this shootout is mine, this engine package normally makes 65hp and 65ft/lbs however I’ve done some further improvements here which I didn’t dyno test but certainly added to power, performance and delivery. The 72hp number is NOT the KX’s HP! I’d given that number to the guys after our shootout while we were talking about the BRC engine I’m involved with.

TheHypnotstCollector When I was in the paint and body business 29 years ago, a Sikkens paint rep who called on our shop always talked about the Cagiva he rode in the 80s. You would have thought he was an unpaid rep for the motorcycle manufacturer instead of the automotive paint he pushed! Thanks for bringing up the brand.

KTM needs to redesign and issue their KTM550 again. Might as well make the open class OPEN again. Fuck four strokes.

Dexter Hoenhause the engine combination there has proven to deliver 65hp and 65ft/lbs in the past, this one has some further refinements but I didn’t run it on the Dyno. The HP number given for the KTX was a number I provided while talking about the BRC engine, No HP numbers were given for my bike or the KX Guru ride.
