Great perspective, Gordon! I would love to see you try the newer style R14 hybrid tires in that experiment to see the difference between them and the R4's in snow. Maybe you know someone that has them.

I've got the r14. They do better than the r4.. Although I have asphalt driveway. Our slopes are about the same. Mine might even be steeper in a Longer distance. I slid down it with my snowblower and salt spreader. So 1000 extra lbs. Not fun. Almost went sideways and into the highway down below. Bought some of the same branded chains but they are made for asphalt. ( Have yet to try them yet... No snow at the moment.)

Those tires are gonna be awesome when used as more of a utility snow tire, like you'd get on a plow truck or someone's ski country Subaru/winter battle tank. Great tires if you're doing tons of asphalt plowing

I don’t need chains for my tractor where I live, but, years ago when I used to drive in the mountains in winter (California, Utah), I used a pair of spare tires with heavy chains with traction bars welded to the cross links. That rear wheel drive car would go places that I’d only attempt with all wheel drive today. Very good advice from you.

We use V Bar Skidloader chains on the front wheels because most of the weight is on the front. Skidloader gets V Bar chains all the way around.

I have had chains on all 4 wheels of my Kubota tractor since 2004 and they are a necessary on hills. I live in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia and have a very steep 600 foot driveway with a switch back there is no way in icy conditions you will make it up our driveway with just chains on the rear, with 4x4 and chains on the front and back and can plow our driveway up and down in safety, its not nice to trade ends when you lower your front blade . Mountain plowing is so much different than snow plowing in the flat lands of Ontario, or most of eastern North America.

In my mind, you have to have some sort of chain. Ice chains sure give good traction. To off set the harsh ride you can lower the tire pressure a bit. And from what I know the chains should be a little loose for best traction. I have a number of old garden tractors, which are two wheel drive. Snow throwers on the front. So I need the chains. And for added traction on any tractor, you need extra rear weight. Wheel weights, loaded tires, or weight off the back of the tractor. This helps greatly with traction. Great video GP.

Thanks for the nice demo of the necessity for chains on snow and ice (probably mud as well). The chains also have a tendency to slow one down in in-climate weather. Too many accidents are caused by speed and lack of traction. Stay warm and safe there in Canada this winter. Hope Santa visits your place at the end of the month. Cheers!

Good morning.I also think a big misconception to new tractor owners is the "4 wheel drive"factor. Many people think there all terrain capable, not so.Any remotely hilly terrain,or where real winters still exist, chains are the way to go.I'd be in big trouble without them.Even cheap chains are better than no chains.

Hello GP. I have not used chains because of plowing the runway. When I had R4 tires, I found I slipped a lot with my tractor. when I purchased the KUBOTA tractor, I had turf tires put on the tractor and have not skipped t all. The turf tires seem to do better on the snow and ice. If I had a driveway like yours, I probably would put chains on my tractor. But, my driveway is flat. Good video and demonstration. I have had the unpleasant experience of sliding backwards the a Case skid steer. Not a lot of fun.

Chains are great for sure but they are not ideal if you need to maintain asphalt or concrete surfaces. I like the R14 style tire as an alternative in those instances (R4's are notoriously bad in the snow). However, if you only have gravel or dirt surfaces to maintain, nothing beats some studded chains, especially if you have a very hilly driveway like GP does.

I have R1 tires on a Kubota L2501 with chains that are similar to GP's, they're studded diamond pattern. The tractor gets parked on a concrete floor and I use it to maintain a 700 foot driveway in the winter. I have no issues with damage to the asphalt or concrete.

If your rear wheels are set to only 1 position, no width adjustments then spacers are most likely needed regardless of tractor make. If your wheels are of a 2 piece design, between the adjustments in width and possibly switching sides spacers may not be required. Widest stance would be 1) dish out on center part of wheel and 2) rim to the mounts furtherest from the tractor body. There are reference online for this position. It may be you do not want this stance except when running chains.

Good video GP. I was wondering if your tires are weighted (can't remember) and if it would have made a difference if you would have had your box blade or some other implement in back to help weigh the tires down for traction? I've slipped and slid a little with my 3301L series when getting the snow off the dirt road myself here at the house. I just keep going back and forth as far as whether it is worth the money for the chains to clear the road/driveway once to two times a year? Merry Christmas and Happy Hollidays my friend! 🙂

Morning Cliff! That is a great question and I wanted to go back and do both segments again with my box blade on. I park my tractor in the garage with a concrete floor. During the winter I have trygg studded chains and I haven't seen any major damage or issue to the concrete. I have no doubt there might be a mark here and there. But nothing that I think is a major issue. The tractor is a B2650 so it isn't a big - heavy tractor.

Hey Gord. We looked at chains for our L series. I didn't see enough clearance to the factory cab?

I had to install wheel spacers. On both the B2601 and this one.

@@GPOutdoors Ok that makes sense. We run chains on the front tires and get by ok. May have to look into the spacers for the rear. Thanks for the info

Do you need them? No. But.... Will they make your tractor safer? Yes. Will they help avoid you getting stuck? Yes. Will they get you out of a stuck situation more times than not? Yes. So need them No. Will you be better off with them? Absolutely.

Great video GP. Chains are great especially on R4 tires and have a set for all 4 on my 790. Just a reminder on rear brake quote for someone not knowing, if you leave your tractor in 4wd you will have braking on all 4 tires. Kinda safety thing if you need it. My new Kioti actually engages the 4 wheel drive when you step on the brake which is nice when towing something heavy and like a vehicle gives you 4 wheel braking. Thanks GP have a great weekend.

Good morning and thanks very much Bob. I did not know that - I think I need to read over the manual again. It's been a while. Thanks very much!

@@GPOutdoors yep because in 4 wheel drive you driveline is locked together threw the front driveshaft giving your front tires coupled to the rear thus like having 4 wheel braking. 👍Take care GP and say Hi to Guy and Husky Bob for me

Hi Gord - Just a quick thank you note. I have spent some time over the fall setting up for winter. I started with wheel spacers after watching you do yours in an older video and was able to pull that job off. I never would have attempted that had not been for seeing your video. Then after researching myself -and deciding like you - (after a long search due to shortages of the Aquiline tire chain) I was able to also finally obtain the Aquiline chains.I put this on two days ago on my 35 HP JD. I was glad to watch your video on how to connect them which made the job easier. They seem great and I know how they will perform thanks to your informative work. Thanks Again, Jim

Good morning and thanks kindly Jim. I am very happy they helped out. Those wheel spacers were a tough one for me! LOL! You will be really happy having the chains - a little rougher ride but worth it for sure. Happy Holidays Jim!
