the reason the oxygen tank had a larger hole is because as the gas escaped with high pressure and heat it momentarily turned into an oxygen torch cutter and rapidly oxidized the metal the tank is made of. Because the pressure in the tank was mostly even top to bottom is widened the hole evenly creating a mostly perfect 2 inch hole.

The bottle of acetylene is at a much lower pressure, than the oxygen one. It’s designed that way, with that chalky or foam structure to keep the acetone dispersed equally, no uneven pressure. Acetylene bottles also have a couple of metal lugs up top that will melt in the event of a fire/bottle on fire. It relieves pressure. Basically they do everything they can to stop the acetylene bottle from becoming a bomb.

Yeah I remember learning about acetyline and oxygen in metal work class. Oxygen was the rocket the main danger is if you puncture the tank the rule was it was maybe gonna shoot off like a rocket, oh and how it makes fire incredible, the acetyline, was like, welllll it has a bunch of safety features that if they fail we are all dead.
@BlooCollaGal

Yep, according to the safety class I took at welding school last semester the acetylene in the cylinder is dissolved in acetone and there's a fiber (foam?) that keeps it from sloshing around too much or whatever. Scary stuff, acetylene

I knew they had some type of compound in them but never knew quite what it did or about the lugs either. Thanks a bunch for the info 👍🏻

@Kevin R Gosselin There's a safety device called a "flashback arrester" which prevents a flame from going back to the tank, but they're usually located somewhere along the hose or at the base of the torch. I'm pretty sure the lugs he mentioned are to seal the tank if the nozzle gets broken off. Acetylene will detonate at low pressures, so if a tank vents it's like a thermobaric fuel-air bomb going off.

When I worked for Airco Industral gases back in the 1970s we use to service The U.S. Weather Service Helium Contract from Alaska. The cylinders were left out in bush and used for weather balloons. We received one cylinder that had a deep pointed bullet impact in the side of it. It didn't rupture and the cylinder still held pressure in it. We scrapped the cylinder obviously. .

I've been suggesting Acetylene for awhile now. I'm a welder, i use this stuff everyday and my inquiring mind has always wondered how big the explosion would be if someone sent a .50 cal through the tank. My wondering is over. Thank you Edwin! It was a big explosion true, but not as big as i would have thought. I also thought it would have caused a visible shock wave which i didnt see. I've done a few searches on KZfaq over the years to try to see if anyone has attempted this. I couldn't find much. Also, when you first ignite Acetylene from a torch is makes a loud "pop" that you just get used to over time. In theory, when shot, i would have thought that it would have created a sound like a crack of lightning at close range. This video showed very different. Oh, the perfectly round hole on the outgoing side of the oxygen tank made perfect sense to me. Its the original bullet hole of the .50 expanded by the oxy-acetylene rapidly being mixed making the tank molten and expanding the bullet hole outward. Thanks again, so much! Awesome video!
@MODElAIRPLANE100
@MODElAIRPLANE100 Жыл бұрын
I don't think the enlargement of the hole is due to the mix of oxygen and acetylene. Just an oxygen tank will do the same, it is due to the steel of the tank burning

Would be even cooler if they had the slowmoguys for this to record it in 50,000+ fps
@bunnykiller
@bunnykiller Жыл бұрын
the reason it didnt create the explosion it is capable of is because the gas mixture wasnt right, the majority of the acetylene went out the back away from the oxy, did you notice all of the carbon on the ground, that was a sure sign it was straight acetylene being burned ( just like when you light up just the acetylene on a torch and the wispy carbon floaties are made... if they had a weather balloon and mixed it properly and shot it with a tracer, then you would have had the shock wave and with a full tank going off properly mixed it would have been REALLY impressive... a clean pure white/yellow flash and a boom to remember...
@squidwardo7074
@squidwardo7074 Жыл бұрын
My guess is acetylene doesn't detonate, it deflagrates, similar to gunpowder, that's why you don't see a shockwave. But that doesn't mean it won't send a load of shrapnel your way if you conceal it
@bunnykiller
@bunnykiller Жыл бұрын
@@squidwardo7074 without oxygen present acetylene molecules break down into carbon and hydrogen, (this is why an acetylene only reaction is so sooty, plenty of elemental carbon is formed) and yes acetylene will "explode" on its own when over pressured more than 22 psi or so in a gas state, when in the tank, it is "dissolved" into acetone and can be pressurized to 400 psi... when oxygen is present the acetylene breaks down to carbon and hydrogen but also recombines the hydrogen with the oxygen to make water vapor and the carbon combines with the oxygen to produce carbondioxide gas which is why the acetylene and oxygen mixture is many times more powerful of an explosion and that is capable of producing a shockwave due to the incredible speed of the reaction, had he used a weather balloon and filled it with both gasses and shot a tracer round into the full balloon, it would have been a very loud and powerful explosion with a sizable shockwave.

I worked at a factory where we had an explosion in a ignition propane pipe-line. The pipe looked like it was cut out with a acetylene torch after. The reason for the fire was that a titanium valve had a spindle that had oxidized. This caused the valve to be thrown against inside of the pipe, causing a spark. Unfortunately this resulted in a fire inside a room full of tonnes of electrical cables. The fire then caused an explosion which killed a 18 year old apprentice. This video reminds me of this incident back in 2011. I still remember seeing the young guy lay on the ground like a twisted doll with a long, deep cut in his skull. I think he died in a few hours. Stay safe Edwin, and weigh risks!

At the BOC gas pick up point in London UK where I used to collect my refilled oxygen and acetylene bottles, there was a full sized oxygen bottle next to the pick up point that had exploded at some time and the steel cylinder had split down it's full length and turned almost completely inside out, there was a warning message on a plaque attached to the remains that said, 'this happened because some fool used grease on the threads of the top fitting.' I never forgot seeing this blown up bottle and it was a very clever way to prevent a similar thing happening as it was so shocking to see and obvious that people had probably died in the explosion

You really need the gasses pre-mixed in one tank - but doing that would make it insanely dangerous.

You can't pre-mix Acetylene and Oxygen at any significant pressure, it will auto-detonate. Heck, Acetylene alone will auto-detonate if not dissolved in Acetone.

You should have tried this one inside a safe also. The safe acts like a pressure chamber which cause the expanding gasses from the tanks to rapidly increase giving you a way bigger booooommm.

Just imagine if the Acetylene and O2 was mixed together in the same tank, stochiometric @ 3000 PSI!! Now that I would pay to see. I'm surprised these separate tanks even did what they did, adding the flares was smart.

Mix them together in a balloon and you have a big explosion, if you put them together under the pressure of that 02 tank I think they would need to be farther away, pretty dangerous I Think.

Acatelyn spontaneously polymerisation at 2 atm so a 3000 psi mix is not happening.
@DeathPerceptionlml
@DeathPerceptionlml Жыл бұрын
pure acetylene blows up past 30psi so thats the max you can pressurize it to.. the reason the tank doesnt explode is because the acetylene is dissolved into acetone.. if the acetylene and oxygen were perfectly mixed in a balloon the explosion would be insane. if you mix the 2 gases 50-50 into a bread bag and blow it up its like a grenade. if you did a hot air sized balloon it would be nuclear. lol

@@DeathPerceptionlml years ago my Dad put o2 & Acetylene in one of those punching bag balloons that are about 18"-24" in diameter then cut the end off a long extension cord taped to hot&cold wires to the balloon set it far away from the house and plugged in the extension cord to a outlet, it was the loudest BOOM !!! BANG !!!! , I was a kid but it was So Loud I will never forget it, My Dad was like a Overgrown Kid Sometimes

It's so surprising how different it was last time when you put a cylinder in that safe, it made the explosion much fiercer as it was confined, So I think It would be super cool to put an OXY cylinder in a steel box/tank etc, or a steel coffin would make a massive bang, and a top video, But you would need to hide behind something this time.

Hey DR Science if you want to have that Huge explosion like you did with the safe well the only way to Re create it is you need to put them bottles in a confined space. Shoot them u best make sure your mile away. Incredible too see 👀 I am glad you both are always safe. Love the videos keep them coming never a dull video ever lmao Rock on 🤘

You want a big bang, get a old propane tank like a 200 gallon house tank, mix the pure oxygen and some but not all the acetylene into it with a mixing valve ( rig a cutting torch up) then add a flare or two, move really far back and get behind something then shoot it with an armor piercing round.
