Fun fact: AR-500 steel was originally employed on mining equipment, it stands for "abrasion resistant 500 hbw". An excavator bucket of this size normally uses 300+ brinell hardness steel for the body, and up to 600 hbw for the teeth. Sometimes they also use pure cementite plating when working with highly abrassive materials. Replacing the plates is cheaper than replacing the whole bucket.

When you’re so used to carrying around a 50 you use your AK 47 as a pointing tool for the 50bmg holes.....your name might be Edwin.

Typically, excavator buckets or dozer plows reinforcing parts are made of AR400 or AR500 steel ,similar to armored plates sold online as targets. So they are fairly tough steel plates. That 50 cal BMG triggers Edwin's special nerves and makes him laugh when he shoots it. :) LOL

From the theoritcal point of view, having the excavator turned the other way is safer because any non-centered round bouncing back would be into the sky or the ground. Very good accuracy from 300 m.

Metal is a great conductor of heat. You have mentioned how the projectiles are cool when they are stuck in metal, as opposed to other materials, or when they are laying on the ground. Those hunks of metal wick away the heat very quickly.

Most of a bucket is going to be a milder steel. The hard parts would tend to be the bushings, teeth, maybe some cheek protection... Otherwise a steel that is a little softer and has some better flexibility... Usually for digging in hard stuff we add hardened plates in staggered sections. Typically add AR 400-500 or some hardox
