Nice video! But since i do code several vehicles per week for different customers, i would like to point a few things out. 1st. For people who don't know anything about coding: The central coding key (ZCS) or vehicle order(FA or VO) is like the DNA of the car. The build date, basic equipment and optional equipment are listed inside here. It's saved redundant in 2 modules and has one simple funcion.. The computer that's going to program or code the module(s) reads it and then determines how to deploy the software/coding to suit that specific car. 2nd. Because of the vehicle order only being changed for manual transmission, you should only code the relevant module(s) after you write the FA to the modules storing it, so in this case you should have only coded the kombi (AKMB) instead of the whole car and you would be all set. Processing the whole car can be quite dangerous. As failure to communicate with a module during coding actually can destroy a module.. ask me how i know ;) Because of that you should only code modules that actually need to be coded and leave the rest alone, to reduce the risk :) 3rd. Just leave the car running while coding, you won't hurt anything ;) If battery voltage dips too hard it might cause communication problems and the consequences of that can be really bad for your module. 4th. Regarding the E46ZST file... There are 2 types reference files actually, one E46AT and one E46ZST. If your car has a central coding key (ZCS) , use the E46ZST file for reference of what to add or distract from the strings. If your car has a vehicle order, use the E46AT file. Within the AT file, the options will be listed, and the option codes to add will be in front of the description in the following format: Wxxx , in which case you should enter it like this in NCS expert: $xxx The newer chassis that only have a vehicle order will only have a ExxAT file in the DATEN folder. Lastly, You should (in theory) also program (not coding, flashing the module actually) the DME after a manual swap. You could do this by any programming tool of choice like WINKFP, ISTA /P or an external scan tool with module programming capability. The reason for this is that the software for an AT DME is different to that of a MT. The software in the DME for an AT actually retards the timing a little bit when the transmission should shift, thus reducing torque and enhancing the life of the clutches inside your transmission. Don't feel offended by my criticism, I really do like all of your videos and i myself learned quite a bit from them! +Arno Bruynen Do you have any advice for re-programming a 2003 E39 530i from auto to manual? Are the modules to reprogram the same (AKMB)? What reference file should I be using? Do you have any tutorial on flashing the DME? I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks.

RE flashing the DME after manual swap, from my research it sounds like you'd need to find the DATEN file set of your model/close to same year which was a factory manual to flash or is it more simply a case of find a relevant file close to yours and flash without AT computer plugged in = its now a manual tune?? We'll then need to sync DME to EWS module which DIS can do easily. I'm sure plenty of people would love to confirm this as its strangely held close to heart by a lot of people which i don't understand. Sharings caring =)

javarithms yes. First make sure you have the latest daten correctly installed. Use the E39ZST file since E39 only had central coding key during it’s production. Ctrl+f and search for ‘getrieb’. Find the line that contains something like “automatikgetriebe” (automatic gearbox in German) and subtract that corresponding bit from the SA string. If you’re swapping in a 6 speed manual, you would also need to add the corresponding string to the ZCS. I can’t remember what it exactly was called like but something with 6 and getriebe... After that, execute job ZCS_schreiben on the ecu’s containing them, for the E39 it’s KMB and EWS. After that choose the sg_codieren job and execute it on the KMB module. Next to program the DME with WINKFP, you first need to import the assembly line data,SGDB and PADB files. There’s a document floating around the internet somewhere on how to do just that. Google is your best friend ;) Also, you should use some version of WINKFP that’s above 5.1.3 if you don’t want to deal with bugs and a possibly bricked ECU. Have a sufficient enough power supply connected to the car while programming that can maintain system voltage at about 13 volts. Next, go to ETK or RealOEM and enter your car’s information but pick manual instead of automatic for transmission. Go to engine electrical system>programmed DME control unit and write that part number down somewhere. Then connect your interface to your computer and to the car and start WINKFP again. Choose comfort mode. Next click on choose ZUSB. Select the ECU family matching your ecu. Now take note of the part number that you wrote down earlier, choose the ZB number in the list that matches the last 7 digits of the part number. Leave integration position at unverbaut and click ok. Click done. Next enter your vin number in the box and click ok. Click program and watch the magic happen 😉 Hope this can help. I don’t have links to tutorials but there are plenty of them around. If you don’t understand some of these things, you can reply to this message and i’ll answer it as soon as i can. Google is also your best friend if you want immediate answers 😜 Also, flashing your ecu can brick it if done incorrectly... Do so at your own risk!

TheKingie07 after you’ve installed WINKFP,INPA,NCS-expert,... you should download and extract the latest DATEN files to your BMW standard tools installation. Daten files correspond to a certain integration level ( software version ). The latest files are mostly backwards compatible with other versions. The latest version i could get a hold of is V59 and it’s doing the job fine for me. Google around a bit, links are hidden quite often but you should be able to find it and instructions on how to install them properly. Code everything with NCS-expert, then flash the DME with WINKFP. Steps on how to do that i have already described in another reply to this video. Be carefull because flashing a module can brick it if flashed incorrectly or if battery voltage drops. Flash your ecu at your own risk! You cannot leave the car running while programming with WINKFP, so have a sufficient power supply hooked up to the car. Good luck!

Well done 50's kid put out my trans/cog/fault light out this evening, found your info useful after going from ZF slush box to manual trans last week , I used a manual sub engine loom to keep things even tidier so my reverse lights and parking sensors are all good needing no additional wiring, purchased everything I needed from a BMW E46 breaker who gave me everything I needed to do the conversion and I mean everything, top seller and cheap too

Thanks much for these excellent and detailed videos. I have been searching for two and a half years since doing my transmission swap on my '02 E46 for the proper instructions. After a couple of issues with basic connectivity with the car, which I resolved as per my notes at your Installation of INPA and NCS Expert video, by splicing pins 7 and 8 on the OBD connector, I was up and running and coded the car and cleared all vestiges of the automatic transmission error codes in about 15 minutes, after writing down each step of your instructions. Superb job! You saved me about $250 from sending the ECU to a remote location to have it recoded. I could not get the car smog checked as long as that transmission code was there, even not related obviously to emissions. The DMV thinks that a manual transmission has electronic "shift points" nevertheless, obviously never having experienced a true clutch-driven car. They said I would have to change the entire wiring harness and the ECU. I had to laugh...

I'd say the Vehicle Order is a list of options that describe the vehicle. From the VO you can determine the list of ECUs fitted and the coding data that is written to each ECU. From E65 onwards the VO is also used, in conjunction with the factory ilevel, to determine the correct software update for each ECU.

Thank you for another excellent video! I’ve spent some time coding my e60 and now I’m working on an e46, and your video has given me a great intro into what I’m trying to tackle...However, it seems there is a real lack of information on the forums and the internet in general for what I’m trying to do, so I’m reaching out to you in hopes that you might be able to shed some light on the job I’m currently facing. A pre facelift 2001 325ci that I’ve swapped out the ZF automatic for a GM automatic...I’ve swapped the wiring harness, the tcu, driveshaft, etc...the issue I’m having is coding it, and I’m coming up with zero insight on what needs to be done to get the car communicating with the new (used) tcu...Do you have any advice on what I need to rewrite to make this swap work? Have you ever considered doing a video highlighting this swap? With all of the ZF transmission reverse drum issues, this seems to be a popular swap idea to many, but I’ve yet to see anyone post anything anywhere about the coding obstacles encountered with it...I own a shop and have had my hands in quite a few bimmers, but this one has seriously stumped me and your input would be seriously appreciated! Excellent again thanks. A note on making it easier to follow your on-screen action. In INPA it was very hard to follow where you were going. You were using the function keys on your keyboard without announcing the keystroke each time. Which made it nearly impossible without pausing and replaying several times for each screen to catch which function key you were selecting. One of the overloads with NCSExpert for a beginner is that the function keys look the same in some screens, some screens look very similar, and the keys change position. If you're going to use the Function keys on your keyboard instead of the cursor please please verbalise what you're doing/have done with the action. Or use the cursor/pointer. You were excellent at this when doing your previous "How to INstall INPA 7 NCSExpert" video.

I'm really sorry about that! I typically try to call out "f2 blah blah" whenever I hit F2 as you pointed out in the earlier video but I guess maybe I missed the mark on this one. I'll try to be more clearer where I am going in the future whenever I do one of these.

You need to code each module separately one at time Especially the KMB and MK60. with EGS connected. then clear adaptations on Egs and DME. then unplug EGS and clear adoption on the DME one more time done . good luck.

hi man, great vrideos! i want to swap my 330ci pre facelift with smg/ssg gearbox to a manual box. before i do it i want to know exactly what to do and dont get stuck. so i have a few question and maybe you an answer it. Does the coding with substract 8 from SA code is that the same procedure if you have an smg/ssg? also, i dont know if possible, but to what you have to change if the last number of you 16 digit hex is 1.2.3.4.5.6.7 or 8?? or is that not possible? After you change the SA code, you write it to EWS and KMB(depending type), after that, you did job: codieren in all modules one by one. i think that is for learing the modules that the car has no auto trans and dont give any related faults. am i correct? thanks again for making this great video's. Hi @50skid, nice videos, many thanks for them. I am currently having an odd issue that I am having trouble solving. Any help would be appreciated. I converted my 3/02 330ci from auto to manual, I have coded the car, no more lights on dash car is happy and changed the auto harness to a manual one. BUT, when I scan with ista-d it is looking for an EGS that does not exist but the car has no warnings. I have tried using different DME part numbers from manual 330's and this did not help. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Or any suggestions

Hi 50skid Thanks for the great video, pls advise...my computer box was stolen together with my transponder, i then purchased second hand replacement computer box and transponder from a friend which goes together but he didn't have the key and ignition for me , luckily i've got my old key and ignition....my question is ...can i marry these two sets together with this software(INPA) and how ?

Default perameters means, get rid of all learn perameters, like a more aggressive set of sdhift points or aggressive fuel curve that the ECU would learn for people that drive aggressivel).

50skid love your videos. I have 1 question to ask. Instrumental cluster is not working. I checked all fuses under glove box. They are all good. What is that changed old with new battery. Turned car on and cluster was not working. Can u please help

I have a 2000 323i that I managed to get the cog and dsc light off of with the help of this and the thread. Was wondering if you could help me figure out why my SES is staying light? Still getting p0600 for the serial bus with the trans but my SA is correct on everything I’m checking? Are the adaptations really hanging me up? My INPA isn’t working on engine, but it’ll work on other control modules on the car.

I am coding my 1997 e39 tds to manual. I succefully coded the GM string by subtracting 1 from the 3rd number (from 8 to 7). However, I am confused on what to do with the SA string because I am supposed to subtract 1 from the 4th number but that number is 0?

Currently trying to fit an auto ecu kit into a manual car. Didn't know it was an auto kit when I ordered it. Advert just said 323i 1999 which is what I had. With the new ecu, ews and key I can hear the fuel pump prime but the starter with not work. What would to do to free starter to engage?

Doing this on an e90, if I go in that Daten folder and go to e89, and search in there for the automatic transmission order there is more then one automatik listed on that doc, do I delete them all or just start with 205 ?

would you incounter issues taking a 2001 manual trans and installing into a 2003 auto? now seeing this part about non-facelift modules compared to facelift modules, will this be a pinch point while changing over to the 2001 manual transmission? Edit: I think its just for reference to know what your looking at, rather then what you can and cant do kinda thing.

Hey, I’m having a issue. The VO $205 didn’t appear it when I went into FA. I Re flash the DME to 6SPD with the Binary prior before coding can that be the issue? Will I have to ref lash it with its Original Binary? Then recode it? The COG light is still on.

I am looking for a way to change an option on automatic transmission when it is on "D" mode. I want the transmission to do clutch like on manual gearbox when I take my foot of the acceleration pedal. Action is like it is on "N". Anybody can help me with?

I’ve just put an m52 from an auto car into my manual coupe, the ecu still thinks it’s an auto. how would I code it to a manual? It won’t even crank because of this. I’ve done the relevant wiring too to no luck. I’m pulling my hair out at this point. thanks in advance

Hi - I've got an issue with my M54 swap. The ECU I had to swap doesn't have a VIN attached to it. How can I read the modules with NCSExpert if there's no VIN?

Hey 50's Kid, I'm trying to find an instructional for coding/re-flash ECM/PCM after an automatic transmission swap/exchange. I've installed the same transmission ( same part number & make ), the donner-trans was ( bought from BMW wrecker ) & has the stock mechatronics unit installed. Why i'm getting an error ( U0301 ) which causes the engine to run in limp biscuit mode lol. After the replacement trans was installed I found the car would run fine for about the first 10 minutes of just idling it log this error, throws an engine-check-light & run like it's misfiring almost. But I'm able to clear the code - after which the vehicle will run fine agin until the error is logged again. Only happened after replacement box installed. I've been able to setup INPA in Windows laptop with NCS-Expert etc, I just need to know how to re-program/re-flash ( which could maybe involve changing/updating the transmission ID/Serial number ) + adaptations too I guess. So my question is how to pair/sync the donner trans to vehicle using NCS-Expert. Unfortunately I can't follow this video to da letter ( great insight into INPA though ) please help.... The vehicle is a E46 BMW 2004 318ti Compact M-Sport with the N46B20 engine & a French made auto Thanks in advance. Lexus Crowley.

I purchased a prefacelift e46 325i touring with a 5 speed swap done to it. I’m pretty sure that the vehicle was never coded.. it currently has Break lights and every single damn light on cluster one. Including the tamper dot. Has anyone ever ran into the brake lights on after swap?

Hello here from the uk i have done the conversion e46 330d 2005 and have wired in the reverse switch in the relay in dme box but i no longer have pdc ...parking sensors could any one help with this please

Excellent video as always, I'm wondering if I can use these programs to turn off the service light for the post O2 sensors. I installed headers but left the sensors just because I have them. I guess my question is if I can make the car not to read the post O2 sensors with these programs?

I know that it IS possible to do that and I have seen another "coding" video here on KZfaq about doing advanced things like that, however I don't remember if you use these programs (so much stuff in my head, too many 90s movie lines and song lyrics competing lol)

Just a follow up for the O2 sensors, I found this in another video comment. "I update soft to the EU2 CAT-preparation. It disable x4 Oxygen sensors, When I do this I also change exhaust manifold without cats and clear adaptations. The software number for EU2 CAT-preparation is 7 528 776." He did it using WinKFP. I haven't try it yet since my laptop is being stupid right now and it wont boot up. Hopefully it would help somebody and help me later once I fix my computer, good luck.

I did a manual swap in my e46 330ci and I followed your video to the letter to code the vehicle order and got rid of the transmission gear light and I should've stopped there, but I went ahead and cleared all the other modules to their defaults and my DSC and Brake light went on when I reset the Mk60 module, and I can't get them to go off. I recalibrated the steering wheel column alignment with INPA. I've been working at this for days and I can't come up with an answer. Any advice you can offer would be highly appreciated; I would even pay for a solution.

Ok, just in case anyone is wondering. I found that if I disconnect the cables from the auto transmission control unit most of the lights went off. I only have one unresolved problem. My service engine soon (SES) light is still on because of one fault code, P0600 something about serial connection failure I think it has something to do with the DME looking to communicate with the auto trans. module two solutions come to mind 1. reprogram the DME so it stops looking for the auto trans module, Can that be done with NCS Expert and INPA? 2. Jump the pins on the cable between the DME and the auto trans. module to close the loop on that circuit? I like option 1 best do you know if that's possible?

My car won't connect to ncs expert. Aka load modules and vin and all that. Fresh 5 speed swap. I did drive it 50 miles before I got code p0600. And now it won't even crank. I had nick from active autowerke try and code it for me, but even he was stumped. It could see the ecu but nothing else.

One thing is worth to say. If You like to have same characteristic of power & torque like "factory" manual car You should reflash MS43 with WinKFP and put appropriate firmware.

Hi, i was going to advise the same thing except what noone seems to mention is what the 'appropriate firmware' actually is, as i understand it can be the full DME file from a true factory manual of the same engine as yours. Any advances on this info?

TheKingie07 you can find this yourself. Go to RealOEM and select your car’s information but choose manual transmission instead of auto. Head over to engine electrical system>programmed DME control unit and write down the part number somewhere. The ZB number that you will need to choose in WINKFP will be the last seven digits of the part number that you’ve just wrote down 😉

You can use a DME of an Manual Car, but you have to decode the EWS in this way or Change the EWS and the ignition Lock too.

I have an 09 Mini Cooper S with a manual transmission originally. I used the DME/CAS on an automatic transmission mini cooper s for testing. when I put back the DME/CAS on the original car, I get a transmission missing message. I tried everything you mentioned and another commentator with no luck. what is the next step? I might add the $205 on the car, write the FA to the CAS and FRM. then delete and update the FA on them again?

i guess u need a manual instrument cluster for manual transmission or? cause u cant see the actual gear position as on automatic. or u can code it somehow? need to have an manual gear position sensor on automatic display?

relaxo delaxo not needed, you can just code it. That’s mainly the point of this video, how to get rid of the cog icon when you swap the transmission. Coding your cluster will turn off the display for the automatic transmission.

relaxo delaxo you can’t. There’s no electrical output from the transmission to tell the cluster what gear it’s in, if you swap in a manual

"Limp mode" is where an automatic transmission defaults to 4th gear only. Since you don't have an automatic anymore, you cannot possibly get into limp mode. ;-) You can drive it for as long as you like without coding it, as long as you don't mind the check engine light or unless your state requires you to smog check your car and you have to have no check engine light for that.

What do I do if after selecting any of the options in NCSExpert: AKMB, ALSZ, EWS,KMB, and all I get is a "Vin is fautly" code? I have tried in two different E46's 1999 328i and 2004 M3 and on both i get "Vin is Faulty".

Daniel Fellon I think your daten files are out of date or installed incorrectly. Go find the latest version online and a tutorial on how to properly install them. You can also receive this error message if there has been tampered with the mileage or if the VIN number in the LSZ,KOMBI and EWS doesn’t match. In many of these cases, the tamper dot on the cluster will be illuminated. Hope this helps.
