My dad grew up a sharecropper's son in Louisiana during the depression of the 1930s. I used to listen to his stories for hours. Although poor, they always had an abundance of meat and produce while people in large cities were literally starving. I have since inherited the farm my great grandfather built. The only thing growing there now are natural gas wells.

Nice story Wes. Thanks for sharing. My Grandmother grew up in depression era Southern California. Oldest of 11 children. Married Grandpa Pete when she was 19 years old. They lived separate lives. 2 boys. I asked her once if she loved Grandpa Pete She answered, "back then a poor girl like me, was expected to marry the richest man she could stomach". If ya didn't pick one, your parents would pick one for you. She said, at the age of 19, she was literally taking food out of another younger sibling. Grandpa Pete was a very wealthy man. He bought her a nice house. Provided nicely for her children. She hated him. She wanted to be a war nurse. I should have asked more questions about her life. I miss her terribly. The best part of my DNA. I love you Grandma Ruthie ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

Wow, these are some of the best old photos I’ve seen. It’s heartbreaking to see how poor people were, but still carrying on and trying to enjoy life. The whole 1930s decade was bad for most and only resolved with wwII.

Man! I'm so glad this came back! In 2019 I used to watch these playlists because I don't have cable. Id watch these in the morning with my wife before going to work. The way the times are captured makes me sad to see how it has all gone away. Thank you for keeping this alive!

My parents travelled by car, through the US in the late 1950’s and people would just stop and stare at them, because of their “exotic” appearance and British accent!

Great pictures! I was so surprised to see the first picture, which shows Napa Valley! My family and I had moved into Napa in April, 1956. I remember Napa very well as it was in 1956. That barn looks so familiar too. I'm still living in Napa. Napa still looks like this picture, only no horses are around and vineyards are.

So many things I still remember, the milk in glass bottles. The little shops that had only a few customers. Life was good. What is strage to me is bare footed children, I guess I am to young for that.

For you to complain on the internet, obviously. If he were standing here today, that man of civil service (even though he may not have wanted to be), what would suggest you do? I have to admit, I'm not a man of service to my country, many of us aren't, and the place has gone truly downhill.

Very atmospheric & revealing fotos. They show how the Southern States have always persisted with racial segregation & how endemic poverty was. Would love to know the fate of tenant farmers after mechanization took hold - if like Europe, it meant unemployment & migration to dire conditions in the cities. The ripple effect is probably still being felt.

It would be better if you restricted the photos to the '30's and '40's. As most seem to be from that period. Having other ones years earlier makes the display disjointed. Though I will say it a very interesting collection.

Great photos. Those farm boys looked mean. I don’t think they came from a happy family. Also I noticed how terribly thin the children of that large family were and how most of the children in all the photos were too poor to have shoes and clearly didn’t get washed very often, the dirt on their feet and legs was ingrained. All those poor children, I just want to hug them all, give them a good bath, clean clothes with no holes and some good nutritious food inside them.

@@MrSpikebender My mother's depression mentality did not make her a depressed person, but there was a cloud over her life. She was aware of it, but could not help certain compulsive behaviors, like hoarding weird stuff. And you are right- we do have some interesting times ahead! Not a good thing, but spend a minute and consider what it must have been like in 1919 to come home from the European trenches to the Spanish flu (20 times deadlier than CV-19 with a much smaller population). Or twenty years later, my folks got married the year Hitler invaded Poland. I remember my mom taking a flight to Texas to see my brother off to Vietnam. I have good reason to be optimistic about my future. I hope you do too.

@@uncareid5557 My Great Grandparents migrated from Germany soon after WWI. I was told they could see where things were going. They ended up in backwoods Louisiana. My Papa (grandfather) came into the world soon after. He quit school in forth grade so he could hunt to help feed the now family of seven him being the youngest. Long story short, He was a great man. A kind person. and that man could fish. He did pretty good in life. I lived next door to my grandparents till I was sixteen. I was lucky enough to have him in my life till I was in my mid forties.

The Bible says that we are all guilty of breaking the Ten Commandments of God (Romans 3:23). As a result, we all deserve to go to Hell because none is righteous, no not one. (Romans 3:10). But the good news is that you do not have to go to Hell (John 3:16). Jesus Christ loves you so much that He died on the Cross for your sins and if you Repent of your sins and Accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior then you will be saved (John 3:16). Jesus is calling on all to repent and you know longer have to live in despair but in love, joy, and peace through Jesus Christ. Amen.

God they needed birth control of some kind. I always wonder why the heck women have more and more kids when they cannot feed what they have or themselves. My grandmother was a nurse in W V....Appalachia country...and she told of the number of babies who starved to death. Women would have 8, 9 kids and spit out another one to die. And another. And another. At some point you just cut the man. I would.
