An educational video explaining the proper way to clean a canister filter. I know this is pretty basic but for those who are new to the hobby or simply new to canister filters, I hope you find this helpful. I am using my Aquatop CF500 for this demonstration. As always ladies and gentlemen thank you so much for watching You are the best!

what the heck, thank you for that tip at the beginning to turn the suction to the hoses off. For some reason most of the other guides I saw on this did not mention it, and the last time I tried to clean my filter it was an absolute water disaster all over my floor. You just made my life so much easier with this, thank you.

I noticed your foams were at the top when they should be the first thing water hits which is at the bottom so the foams filter out large , medium and fine debris if the debris hits the biomedia it will clog the pores on the media meaning the bacteria has less space to grow on

I used to rinse in tap with no problems, until I killed off my bacteria colony. I rinse in aquarium water and I'm not really worried about making the inside of the canister look like new. Imo just get the big junk out so the flow is good and otherwise leave the media alone as much as possible

Given the very large number of respectful but critical comments (eg, they are clearly not trolling you) highlighting the issues with the video, the responsible thing to do is update the video with on screen prompts. *Especially* with regards to the use of household well water in this video, which is not stated in the video. Most people who watch this video will not read the comments, read the description or have dechlorinated water as their household supply.
@Quepiid
@Quepiid 7 жыл бұрын
Should not have filled the canister with tap water before closing it up. Bio media should never see chlorine/chloramine. It may be ok for you. But someone watching this video may have really high levels of chlorine in their water and wipe out their tank doing that.

Could I fill it with tap water than throw some water conditioner in there ?
@melonheadorion6083
@melonheadorion6083 3 жыл бұрын
@@sammarcin2617 if you are on a city water system, as long as you use somethign like prime or other water treatment to remove the chlorine, you will be good. you have to make sure that you do that before you add your media's back into it. tap water, by health requirements, has alot of extra stuff in it to make water safe for human consumption. the extra stuff is there to kill bacteria that cause illness to humans, so if your biomedia, which has the beneficial bacteria in it, touches untreated water, any chlorine in the water, will kill that bacteria, and you need that bacteria to help with the nitrogen cycle, so if you kill a lot of the bacteria that your system has, you will likely see ammonia spikes.
@warrenmacdonald1372

Here.s a solution to the tap water/no tap water argument. Use tap water in a suitable container for the media BUT ADD DECHLORINATOR FIRST before the media, then rinse away. Full stop.

I have a sun sun similar external filter, I have a lot of red algae, I admit I have been bad and it's been about 6 months since install without a clean. I have a lot of silica in my water system, I live on a sand shelf. is there anything you can recommend adding to filtration that would cut down on the brown/red fuzz? its coating everything and I cant keep up with it, I'm ready to separate my fish and haul the tank outside and thoroughly clean it both glass and decor/rocks but it would have to wait another 6 months for Wisconsin summer time. would something like phosgard work?

The plunger on top of the cannister is supposed to be used to bring the aquarium water into the cannister after hooking it back up. The sink water is ok to be used as long as you treat the chlorine with water conditioner before hooking it back up to the aquarium.

You should take that fine mechanical pad and put it after the coarse pad on the bottom tray not on top other then that decent vid. Also you should finish priming it before you turn it on its hard on the impeller if not. that's the clicking sound you hear.

Great video! I've got a tetratec ex700 which looks and functions similar to yours. Just one little tip, before turning on the device, pump the priming button a couple of times until you don't see any bubbles and the system is relieved of airpockets. It will help your impeller and you won't hear the cracking noises. Mine came with bioballs as well, this is actually the first month I'm running bioballs but I think I'm just going to use the cut up leftovers from the sponges instead, probably more effective anyways. Thanks for the video :)

Filter pads go on the bottom, the top should be your bio media. You don't want dirty tank water to touch your bio media.
@SpeakmansAquariums
@SpeakmansAquariums 8 жыл бұрын
as long as your course mechanical filtration is being hit first it doesn't really matter the arrangement afterward. I've been told it HAS to be this way on a hundred different things related to fish. 90% of the time that is just what works for onebperson. as long as the water is safe and the fish are happy it doesn't make much difference in freshwater.

kyle Smile that’s running your impeller dry, even though it’s a few seconds it can be very harmful and burn out your filter. i recommend unplugging then clogging the flow on the pipes with the little lever. just use a plastic container and no water will be a provlem

Any particular reason you don't use the UV?
@SpeakmansAquariums
@SpeakmansAquariums 8 жыл бұрын
+Dustin Mitchell I used it once to help with a slight algae bloom and it seemed to work. I feel like the water might be moving slightly too quickly past the bulb to get the full effects of the UV, but I think it works nontheless. I simply just haven't needed it to be honest with you.
@SpeakmansAquariums
@SpeakmansAquariums 8 жыл бұрын
+Speakmans Aquariums I don't think you can go wrong here. It's lacking the fancy things some of the name brand canisters have like auto prime, etc. but it throws the water out, is so deep you can put multiple kinds of media of your choosing in it with no problems, and it's very quite. You literally cannot hear it run. I actually check the output to make sure it's still running every night when I feed my fish because you can hear it.

Why risk damaging your cycle with untreated tap water? If you use tap water to clean/rinse your biomedia you should first do the following to the tap water before cleaning. 1. Add Sodium Thiosulfate, this will neutralize the chlorine. 2. Add Nitrobacter, this will put the ammonium levels to zero. Then add your bio media from your canister to your newly prepared tapwater and rinse it. Put back the clean filter media in the canister and you are off to go. I tested tapwater after adding Sodium thiosulfate and Nitrobacter and chlorine were neutralized and ammonium to zero. I tested the tap water before adding it and it had high amount of chlorine and ammonia. This process only take a few minutes after adding the Sodium thiosulfate and Nitrobacter. Good luck!
@MissBuilderBear
@MissBuilderBear 2 жыл бұрын
Hi.... could you pls explain the chemical additives you mentioned to treat the tap water before cleaning canister medias. Sodium Thiosulfate.... is this readily available and as I use Prime myself, would your choice be a cheaper option? Is it safe for my neocardina colony and my breeding colonies of Endlers,& Guppies & my Breeding Pairs of Plecos, Platys , Swordtails & Mollies.... there are so many fry being born almost daily that I'm scared to clean the tank which is turning green from algae and tannin leaking from the huge driftwood features in there. So the Nitrobacter puts ammonia levels to zero? How long does this remain so? Is it also safe for my community tank? Where do I buy these chemicals and what do you recommend to treat the greens/ brown tinge beside regular canister cleaning, a good interior scrub , vacuum the substrate and water changes regularly ?... I'm scared to vacuum substrate as there are hundreds of invisible neocardina babies and I'm scared I'll kill half of them,plus suck up half the fry as they r everywhere in my 175 litre tank.... please help me. My email is misscar1979@gmail.com. I'm only new to planted tanks and the breeding just took off so I'm trying to set up my other 175 litre tank as a grow tank maybe as my 10 gallon seem way to small as a fry grow tank.... any advice will be welcomed guys ngirls
