The Adventure of the Lion's Mane: a story that takes place after Sherlock Holmes has retired from London to the South Downs, where he keeps bees and is perhaps sorely missing his former companion, amanuensis and confidant Dr Watson. This story, then, is one of those in this final collection, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes narrated by the man himself. It is one of the strangest of all his cases.
The story itself was first published in the Liberty magazine on the 27th November 1926 (US). Incredibly it's not quite the last tranche of Sherlock Holmes stories to enter the public domain.
It is read by Greg Wagland and was recorded in January 2022 in sunny Lincolnshire.

As Jeramy Brett is regarded as “Sherlock Holmes” so is Greg Waglands voice just perfect for how I imagine Holmes sounding.✊

Greg Wagland has made it impossible to listen to anyone else reading those stories! Was horrified when u tube tried to demonetise him because these stories are covered by others!?!?!? Nobody narrates like Mr Wagland ✊♥️

I listened to a few people narrating Sherlock Holmes but Greg Wagland’s always wins hands down 😁😁😁his reading is always the best and actually draws you further into the story like some sort of magic spell!

I actually look forward to these stories during my seemingly endless mindless time spent plowing fields on a tractor. Simply because I’ve found the very engaging and well read set of mysteries of Sherlock Holmes. Great job folks! You’ve helped an old plow boy enjoy his hrs driving a tractor, feeding the world. Sounds lofty, but trust me, very monotonous! Don’t fear for my safety as the pause button is often pressed. LOL!

Your bit about the copyright expirations got me curious so I looked it up. It's not quite Jarndyce & Jarndyce but quite a tangle. I always loved this story because I grew up by the sea and it's the only Holmes story I ever read where I guessed the villain before he did. Thanks for another great listen on a cold winter night

We were so excited to see a brand new upload. Such great narration of wonderful stories. Sherlock Holmes adventures are timeless classics and He Greg tells them so we'll. Entertaining and relaxing at the same time and we need to have a distraction from the anxiety and stress that seem to be even more persistent at night. Much as I do like this story, I am amazed that once Holmes knew what caused the first death, he did not take steps to eliminate the cause, rather than take time to explain things, which took quite a while. Not like Holmes at all!

Well, this one case doesn't do much for the idea of Mr Holmes's great intellect lol ***Spoiler below*** Maybe I'm being harsh and he is just unaccustomed to the ocean, and so wouldn't know the common warnings given since childhood to those close to it. I'm from the opposite side of the Atlantic, but as soon as the marks and pain were mentioned my thoughts went to a jellyfish sting or something similar.

I love how Holmes is often thought of as introverted, but he's able to make friends and hang out with people, in contrast to the mathematician. Holmes is the sociable kind of introvert.
