I think this might technically be my first shibi of the year! Finally, and it's about time! The weather and some travelling has largely kept me out of the water this year. The family and I will be headed to New York soon too so that'll be more time out of the water, but hopefully the next outing can be as productive as this to have some entertainment for all you loyal subs ;). The weather wasn't great, but it felt awesome to get a serious bend on the pole again. The total fight was about 40 mins (mostly because of the foul hook and heavy swells/currents), but of course I chopped it down for viewing pleasure.
Kayak: 2014 Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14 & 2022 Hobie Outback & 2019 Hobie Outback (Hilo)
Fish Finder: Garmin Echomap Plus 64CV (a.co/d/7pXJpP7) or 44CV.
Rods: Shimano Grappler Type J (Bait), Shimano Trevala x2, Shimano Tavalera, Ugly Stick Tiger Lite)
Reels: Shimano SpeedMaster 25ii x2 (a.co/d/8EkZHpP), Penn Squall 50LD (aka “the lucky reel” in Hilo a.co/d/4e1nOBL), Shimano Stella SW 6000 (Bait Reel a.co/d/1o3UXaC), Penn Slammer IV 9500, Penn Spinfisher VI 8500 (Hilo Main Reels a.co/d/9ES1yQQ), Shimano TwinPower 5000 (Hilo Bait Reel a.co/d/4nPNush).
Line and terminal tackle: 65-80 lb PowerPro (a.co/d/bvOGdsx), 40/50/60lb J-Line Fluorocarbon, 40-55lb AFW wire leader. Owner 4/0 & 5/0 circle hooks, Gamakatsu 6/0 & 5/0 live bait hooks (honestly, I found some cheaper Korean versions at J.Hara for 11cents a hook), Diablo or VMC 2/0 inline hooks for stinger when using wire (hifishgear.com BKK Lone Diablo Inline Hook - HiFishGear).
Damashi: Homemade using line between 12-16lb, typically J-Flouro Samurai. I typically tie my own flies. When using lures, I like Tylah lures or CHL Nox Minnows, both I set up with gold hooks and a red bead which I find to be very effective and highly recommend them. It’s fine when it works. It’s a nightmare when it doesn’t hahhahaha. Some of that nightmare was evident in this one, but it can get way worse than this. Today I was on a shark running one way, and what I think was an actual whale running the opposite direction. 😱

Beautiful fishing friend, here in Brazil, we fished for Yellow Tuna 120 nautical miles close to the oil platforms, for 48 hours. We have already fished specimens weighing 160kg. Soon I will open my KZfaq channel to post videos and photos. However, Kayak fishing on our coast is difficult to fish for Yellow Tuna, only on the high seas.

We are pretty lucky here in Hawaii. Surrounded by ocean so we don’t have to trek nearly as far off shore to find some pelagics. Look forward to your vids!

I needed to not take that other reel out like a dummy 😂😂😂. Least I figured on loosening the lever drag to let it run so I could maneuver the rod lol. If I had a star drag or spinner reel I would have been SOL and that rod might’ve been swimming 😂
