Great job, the wood you are making in to charcoal does it have to be completely dry before you start.

No Kevin it doesn't, but it will take more time and fuel to get the pyrolysis started. I ran into that myself. So if you are dealing with wet wood just keep your fire going under the retort and eventually your damp wood will dry and begin to gasify.

@MrTswindell, I have to say your retort plans and build do great even in the dead of winter here in New Hampshire. Two locking ring barrels, two truck brake drums cost me $ 20.00. I had a sheet of roofing steel to skin the insulation and barrel. The Fire Barrier Mineral Wool insulation was $64.00 at Lowe's building supplies. There's enough to make two retorts. I used 4 ft of 4 inch diameter pipe with a added piece to increase the draft . Well, green wood takes a while to get the process started so the next batch will start with drier splits. I'm delighted with the results and other than a few sticks on the bottom of the barrel not fully carbonizing I would rate this as a success. Thanks for sharing your plans ! Did you cover the stack and seal up the burn pot with clay/dirt after the flames died out? I'm wondering if the outside air would migrate up through the burn tube and enter the charcoal chamber via the 12 drill holes in the tube. Also , did the gasket between the lid and barrel survive? I replaced it with rope gasket used in wood stove doors. That held up well.

Good questions. No, I didn't cover the stack or take any measures to minimize charcoal loss. I just let it burn out on its own to see what I got. I'm not sure why it turned out that way, except that by the time pyrolysis was completed, the flames in the fire box had long since been out.

@@MrTswindell I suspect the residual heat from the brake drum kept the upward draft going through the stack which would act as negative pressure in the chamber. It's 6*F here in NH this morning, too cold to use the CNC plasma cutting table to hack out the parts for the collars and grate assembly. We have 1/3 cord of White Oak, cut and split just waiting to get coaled . I appreciate you getting back to us sharing your experience. How often do you make a batch ?

Not often enough, though I will be using char in the garden and stockpiling for cooking fuel. BTW I removed the seal from the barrel lid because I didn't want it to burn up in use. Didn't seem to be a factor in pyrolysis and charcoal production.

@@MrTswindell Ah, good to know. Those seals can't handle those high temperatures. I appreciate this design as it is a 1 barrel concept.Yet it incorporates two operations enclosed within itself ". Keep it simple " works for me.
