Many of the same principles illustrated here apply to tuning up portable contractors saws as well. It helped me diagnose an issue that had developed on my Ridged 4510 that I have resolved. Thanks for the info Marc.

Thanks for this. My table saw does not have the same adjustments - but I know it can be adjusted. I see so many people obsess about the measurements here - with guages and methods that cost more than my budget allows. I loved the stick method and the t-square method and will be using it to set up my saw. Thanks again for showing me clear ways and for saying "Three thou.... good enough for me" I agree.

I am very grateful for your help, I'm a middle-aged guy who just started tinkering around the wood working world a couple of years ago. I have found wood working to be therapeutic in a variety of ways. I still consider myself a beginner at this point, and I therefore tend to check, double check.. before you know it's been a 3 hour check 🤣🤣 But I don't have any issues with doing things safely, without concerns of time. Just an awesome video - I already have a dial indicator since I do a fair bit of metalwork, so I'll probably use that method when I can, but the "field expedient" methods you show are just awesome! Definitely a few good, quick ways to check your alignment without breaking out the more involved setup - say, if the blade kicks a bit and you just want to make dead sure that you're still "on." Thanks a million for this - truly one of the best instructional vids I've seen on KZfaq!

For my part, I actually really enjoy how long these videos are. I like how involved they are and thorough. Yeah you could say it faster, but isn't part of being a wood worker being willing to do the tedious things to do it right? These videos are exactly what I would expect from a proper wood worker.

Mr. Whisperer, thanks for the great information. Many years ago I bought a Ridgid TS2412. It's not the top end by any stretch, but it has been sturdy and dependable. Eventually I noticed that as material entered the front of the blade, additional material was also being removed at the rear at exit. I knew I was using the fence correctly, but it was driving me crazy. A dialed 2" cut was netting me a 1 15/16" piece. Your video saved the day. There were actually five bolt holding the motor and blade assembly to the bottom of the table. I was amazed how loose they were. I further loosened four, gave the assembly a couple of light whacks with a ball-bing, and retightened. Magic! No more biting at the far end of the blade, and my cuts are within 1/32" of what I set up for. Amazing. I just moved into a new house with my wife, and I inherited an entire two car garage off the bonus room at the back of the house with my own driveway and slide up door. The dream shop is not far away now. I'd send you a pic, but I don't know how. Anyway, I digress - thanks again. My next a piece of furniture should be straighter now.

Hey Mark, I was wondering if you've ever seen the Shopsmith setup guide. Please don't laugh. In my opinion, Shopsmith has the best miter gauge that has ever been made, and one of the perks is that you can run a rod through the crossbar, lock it into place with the supplied thumbscrews, and zero the rod on one flat face of your saw blade. After that, sliding the miter gauge back and forth will cause the rod to contact the blade and you can make your adjustments for the table alignment from that.

It took me awhile, but I was able to get the Blade parallel with the miter slot on my new Contractor's Saw good within 1 1/2 /1000ths of an inch.

Question. I have an old delta 36 650 10" contractors saw, and the back of my blade is nearly an 1/8th inch to the right. I've tried loosening the trunnions to adjust it, but it wont move far enough to the left to correct the problem. Cant seem to find anything bent or broken either. Any advice?

Just saw this. Don't know if you are checking comments but I'll make one anyway. Years ago I ran gate shears from 2' wide up to 12' wide. We used time cards, which are the same thickness as 3" X 5" index cards to shim the blades into alignment. Same principle as your blue tape but sturdier than the tape.

What would you considered a warped table top? I recently purchased my first tablesaw and would like to know what to expect as far as flatness. Currently, I am measuring about .010 on to opposing corners.

That was interesting about aligning the tracks but I rly wanted to know how to align the fence :). My cuts are coming out slightly wider at the top than at the bottom. And since I'm making cuts which are 2 x as tall as my fence and since you can't follow a tooth around like you did in this video I'm not sure how to fix it.

I have a old Dyco combo saw bench, Planer, saw, disk sander, spindle, I use a set of brass stair gauges to test the blade to mitre slots also to make sure the fence is in alignment at each end, a 60 cm ruler fits into the stair gauge perfectly and is easy to adjust

Hi Marc - I have a rigid 4514. This is the first table saw I have owned. To set the 0 bevel they are asking me to place a combination square against the bald and make sure the square is not touching the tip of one of the teeth. Obviously if I place the square between the teeth and turn the blade it will contact the Kerf. Can you explain what they are after with this process? Thank you Mark

I just bought a used Unisaw. The bolts the attach the table to the cabinet - should there be lock washers ? I would have thought yes, but there were not any on mine.

I had to loosen all the bolts and use a big square to get me in the ball park, then a micrometer on a sled in the track to dial in squareness to a few thousandths of an inch... I found that using a table screw as a pivot only works if you are close enough to square that you only need minor angular adjustment to get the slots parallel to the blade..

hi marc, i have a problem with my tablesaw (metabo). when i saw a piece of plywood (less than 10 mm) or when i'm crosscutting a piece of lumber the cut isn't clean, it simply isn't straight. it seems as if the blade is wobbling. what is this caused by? could it be that i need a higher quality blade? or is my miter-slot off with the blade? sorry for my bad english, greetings from holland

Hello Mark, I was wondering if it was at all common that a cast iron top is not completely flat. I bought a new saw and I used a level to check the cast iron and it seems to be not completely flat. Does this happen sometimes? Do I have a defected saw? Thanks for your time

At 3:22, when you find your lucky tooth, I suggest you could use a permanent marker pen of your lucky colour and mark it prominently. Will help to easily locate the same tooth on the other side of the table.

How to adjust the blade of my dewalt table saw? The blade is not 90° to the table at 0°. I need to tilt blade to -5° to make it perpendicular to table but 0° is the lowest.

Some of these methods rely on the miter slots being straight. Mine are a little screwy, so I mount the dial indicator (or ruler) on a miter slider. By using the miter gauge, you're accomplishing the same thing, so that's probably the best bet on a flaky saw.

My cabinet table saw is vert similar, but you didn’t show what bolts you’d loosened?

They do make precision ground set-up plates for this purpose. They're better than the best blades in flatness.

It could be the blade, or some other factor fixed by a standard calibration and tuneup. But one thing I didn't cover in this video that could be the culprit is flange runout. You'll need a dial indicator to test for it and you might want to do a couple of web searches to find out more information about it.

Hi Marc. So let's just say I'm one of those guys who is having a very difficult time convincing my wife to let me spend $150 on a machined straight edge. I have tried everything to no avail. So that being said, what would you do or use if you were in my shoes and didn't have a precise straight edge? 24 to 36 inches would be ideal and it would primarily be used to verify my jointer, table saw, and verify jointed edges. Thank you very much for any input you might have.

Some good methods of blade alignment, but to me, if you can afford $2,000-$3000 bucks for a good tablesaw, you can spring for a dial indicator. It's the most accurate and can be used on other machines like the jointer. I once had a pattern maker of sixty years experience marvel at the smooth surface I got from his jointer after setting it up with an indicator (ala Bob Vaughan). He'd always just used a piece of wood.

Why is it you have to rotate the blade using the same tooth when checking for parallel? (9:45) Why can't you just slide it to the back end of the blade and check it on the tooth that is on the opposite end?

You can tune a table saw, but you can't tuna fish.

You should really have a square against that rule when setting up the blade. Even a very slight skew of the rule can cause a few thousandths of inaccuracy. Yes, I go by thousandths when setting my machines up. My Dad's a machinist, precision has been driven deeply into my brain....

I would do my best to convince her to let me buy a Veritas aluminum straight edge. Not cheap, but cheaper than $150. 38" for $39.50

I looked up "sexy specs" on Amazon and I did not like what they offered. 😁

Try using a brass hammer, it's way easier

One thought on your first method with the ruler with the 64th gradations. The way you were holding the ruler is likely to give you more than a few thousands of slop as you have nothing to ensure that you are at a consistent angle to the blade. I suspect using the miter guide set to 90 degrees to hold the ruler would be more accurate. Something to think about at any rate.
