I've seen circuits on using a 555 timer to drive a Mosfet, which creates an oscillation for a Tesla coil circuit, making it a solid state tesla coil. You can even use the potentiometer to control the length of the lightning coming out

I like your clear explanation and being a conscientious observer found the '555' name origin interesting also. Because I first discovered the 555 timer to great delight when I was looking to build a comparator circuit to run an automobile alarm I was designing in 2004, which worked perfectly for that application ... and more recently decided on using it in conjunction with a thermo-resistor [... in place of your 'Rb' resistor] ... and in that way control the firing of a discharge capacitor into a magnetic field generating coil which runs my 'Come-No-Go' DC motor, to circumvent 'dead-stop-starts' from burning up my field coils. This motor is projected to be upwards of 500% more energy efficient than any in use today, because it recovers 40% of it's 'input power' invested in powering a magnetic field generating coil which reverses 'one of the three' ... field magnets from 'South Pole' to a 'North Pole, attracting one of the four the south pole faces on the armature. As rotation to 'face-to-face' occurs for these two magnets the coil on the field has gone neutral and so now the magnetic field washes over the first disconnected and then reconnected coil [through a bridge rectifier] ... 'it' now generates a 'reverse EMF that is expected to equal the 40% 're-covered' input power. This design overcomes the fault of 'dumping electrons' which the present design of DC motors strand in 'disconnected coils' in the running of the motor ... meanwhile the C-N-G design recovers them. Message me to know more about it.

There is nothing wrong with not knowing ... none of us 'know' anything that we didn't learn since knowledge is not 'instinctive' but rather 'accumulated ... so choosing to know is just that; it's ALL in choice ... BTW ... I as a Grade 10 drop out in 1968 ,,, went on to work for 34 years in combustion safety and engineering. Like conversion of MASSIVE 21 story recovery boilers in a pulp mill ... to overseeing the 'combustion safety' in the construction of the methanol pant in Kitimat BC. From which I designed the "Solution 2 Pollution" system in 1981 ... Which I have no doubt be 'a major player' in reverting Climate Change ... Re; goinggreengloballyblog.wordpress.com/2015/12/08/green-grass-plus-7-c-in-pg/ Cheers!

I like your vids, I watched your 555 series, you are explaining stuff in very clear and concise way. As a beginner in electronics, I'm thinking of building delayed on circuit with MOSFET. If I wanted delayed off, I presume I would just reference gate to ground with pull down resistor and add capacitor in parallel. To make delay-on, the simple way would be to use 555 timer in monostable mode I guess? Btw, I'd like to avoid any fade-in effects. Do you plan making any vids about that?

Thank you for you explanation but i have a question, i want to use the output stage as control mechanism to connect to optoisolator but my project seems like the current and voltage is too low to trigger the moc3021? Do i have to use a bigger npn transistor?

Question!!! Lol, you show pin 3 going "hot" to run the gate on an NPN... Can pin 3 going "cold" trigger a PNP alone? I assume it must, but am wrong often enough to ask, lol. Now, assuming a "yes", can an NPN and a PNP be gated alternately on 3 to produce high current potential pulses before load when 3 is grounded (PNP), and post load ground switching when it goes high (NPN)? Kind of a freq lock on 2 channels?

This is the best series ever for the most important IC ever !! Thank you so much man but one thing I do not understand is why 1.7 V ? The voltage of the output is very important so I really need to understand how to control it. I think you said something like its always like this
@Skinnyrd
@Skinnyrd 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The simple answer to your question is because the data sheet says that the higher is supply voltage, the higher the output drop will be. The more detailed answer I'm not as certain about. I believe it has something to do with the transistors that are controlling the output. You can check the details of this by looking on page 1 of this datasheet: www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm555.pdf

Great work! But it would have been more precise to say that it sources current (emitter current = collector current + base current) in the BJT case, nevertheless, it doesn't sink current at any rate .. otherwise, you will have to use a MOSFET transistor to completely "isolate" the 555 from the terminal circuit .. anyway, that was just a note .. keep it up any many thanks :)

Well done, Mr., thank you! I have to ask you: in a NE555DR circuit based the power limitation is the CI limitation ( 200mA, 5 - 15V), no matter which NPN transistor you use to switch ON/OFF the load, is that correct? I mean, using a single power supply to both, CI PWM controller + load.

The smart thing to do would be to use a separate power supply for the the load.

What am I missing? 100mA is plenty to turn on the LED's. Just use pin 3 of the 555 and limit the current with a resistor. You don't need any external circuitry! I have done this for many years with all sorts of loads requiring currents much greater than LED's!

what effect does duty cycle and frequency have on the output from a transformer. with a pwm input? will a longer duty boost output? or a boost in hz give a greater output voltage. also I need to boost the output as battery volts are depleted. to maintain a fixed output. like I said before I am very new to this. I only met the Tran sisters about 8-10 months ago! I heard of them but didn't know what they really did. besides make radios! thanks for another awesome video. hope you never stop. if you ever do a video on everything. @Skinnyrd 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think the 555 timer will help you with your problem. It outputs a steady voltage that is just a little lower than the source voltage. You can't really boost the output unless you bring in other components.

Very nicely put. Only thing I'm a little confused about is at 3:39 you say that there is a difference of 1.7 volts between the ic and the 9v supply. How come the voltages doesn't add up? Is it because the 9v battery will always have 9v between it's poles? What happens if you add more voltage then what the battery is rated for?
@Skinnyrd
@Skinnyrd 8 жыл бұрын
+R3i3h The 1.7V drop between the battery and the high output state is due to a darlington pair being used to control the output. Look here: www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm555.pdf On page 1 find the two transistor looking devices call Q27 and Q28. These elements drop voltage (mostly by the fact that they are being turned on by the voltage source) before it appears at the output. This is what steals the voltage but this configuration is used to give an increase in current gain.

You said that in your project you used the version with the transistor, but how do you keep the ground from the 555 circuit from interfering with the separate circuit? As far as I saw, you only used one battery. Is it possible to power a 12 volt laser, and the 555 timer on one battery? Maybe you could release the schematic for your project. Thanks!
@Skinnyrd
@Skinnyrd 8 жыл бұрын
+Synced-Up Gaming See if this video answers your question. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o6hxbNiByqvep2g.html&lc=z12qi5hgsrrxxzgyx04cd544ulnxzltgktc0k In this video I used a transistor to control a few LEDs. The concept should be similar to what you are trying to do. In fact, I think your project may be less complicated. As far as the battery question, you could use a 12 volt battery for both a laser and the 555 timer. The 555 timer will run on voltage levels up to 15 volts. Be sure that you have a decoupling capacitor from the positive terminal to ground to help keep the power free from oscillations.

@Skinnyrd
@Skinnyrd 8 жыл бұрын
+Make Electronics The simple answer is that the 1.44 comes from combining the two formulas for t1 and t2 from the 555 datasheet. As far as the motor question, I don't know that I can help you. A servo has gears that will help lock the system in a particular position. If you just want to vary the speed of a DC motor with a 555 timer, try this out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bsBnnrd0uMCrZXk.html&lc=z13fct3ourv4y10ld23wwjiaqzfctxbkr

what happens when the capacitor = 2/3 of V+ ? does it produces a 1 or 0 in pin 6?
@Skinnyrd
@Skinnyrd 8 жыл бұрын
+Chezire Cat When the capacitor is charging and the voltage across the capacitor exceeds 2/3 of the source voltage, then the comparator attached to pin 6 produces a 1. From what I've read (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparator) when the capacitor is charging and it equals the source voltage for the very small amount of time that circumstance is possible, it remains in it's previous state. The capacitor voltage must exceed the voltage it's being compared with.
