I went to Dillman's seminars in late 80s, early 90s and studied under Rick Clark for awhile but George went off the deep end with that no touch bullshit, which really put a damper on all the good he did.

Dillman is a very interesting man. Some of his story here was obviously made up, but it was still interesting to hear.

Tks for posting. I really enjoyed seeing this side of George Dillman. In this regard, I still respect him as a martial artist, despite the chi fiasco.

He didn’t know Hohan Soken, got fast photo..what a shame. So great yet, only got photo session with Soken..This is Kise statement as well. I was one of Soken Hohan’s Yozadake Deshii. I saw letters an photo of Glen double Sword. Kise stated, you got no private lesson...sorry. You can’t change history by words, decades later. You got his age correct. Out of two years study during Soken’s visit...I never hear, blocking, blocky...or punchie, punche. Those notes you got came from Kise not Soken. Half BS...yes

I’ve got post and support this comment. Hohan Soken system was my first in Okinawa. I didn’t learn from him directly but he would visit our dojo frequently. In there that I was there as a young student 11-12 years, I’ve never, never heard him speak like that. When he was in the USA, Kise would have been with him at all times. Period.

Yes, exactly. It is amazing how important brief encounters become in our journeys. I often speak of Sifu Gin Foon Mark, even though I was never his student. I only wrote an article for Inside Kungfu. But, that brief experience continues to resonate through my practice to this day. This is a lesson for us, not to take any encounter lightly. We never know when an encounter, ever so brief change our lives, or whether our encounter with others, ever so brief, will change their lives.

IMHO, there are two broad types of karate... modern karate, which is of the "punch/block" variety and "old style karate" which is of the "trap/lock" variety of karate, which looks a lot more like JKD than ANYTHING usually called "karate"...

At least Dillman was candid and honest about his encounter at the seminar and after.

Except that he was alone with Soken. Unless Dillman spoke Japanese, Uchinagoochi (Okinawan) or Spanish, he didn’t speak to Soken. Fusei Kise would have had to translate.

It does matter whether you block a short person or a 5 miles tall person, your up-block is going to be according to your height, but not as Dillman claims because he has never learned what a good up-block is.
