Same here dude. Its addictive watching his videos. Since finding this channel within the last month I've bought Iron Rangers, Blundstones and I bought a pair of Red Wing Moc toe! However I did see something interesting yesterday up in Asheville N.C at Discount shoe. I seen a red wing iron ranger cut in half sitting in the store! 1st thing I thought of was Rose Anvil lol

Unless you're dealing with heavily corrected/chrome tanned/painted leather, it's going to absorb liquids like a thirsty man in a desert. Especially roughout leathers. There's no way around that without treating your leather with some sort of waterproofing agent.

I think when people go down the boot rabbit hole a lot make the mistake of thinking they always need a thick leather insole and goodyear/stitch down construction. I passed on Blundstones and instead got the Grant Stone chelsea thinking they'd obviously be better. They're amazing boots, objectively better made, but I wanted a chelsea for easy slip on/off, quick trips outside, talking the dog for a walk, etc. I should've opted for the comfortable boot that matches the hoodie and old jeans I'm wearing for such things. Not every task needs a $300+ pair of boots.

Fully agree. I wear steel toe work boots all day at work (Redback and Thorogood Moc Toes), and went down the boot rabbithole. In doing such, I too wrote off Blundstones. When I wanted a soft toe pair of chelsea boots for walking the dogs, errands, etc, I ALMOST bought a pair of soft toe Redbacks. However, my girlfriend bought me a pair of Blundstones instead. Oh man, they are fantastic! The Redbacks might objectively be a "better" boot, but the blundstones are a comfier boot hands down, at least for me. They feel like a slipper! Anyway, I really couldn't agree more with your sentiment that even a "lesser" boot can sometimes be the better boot for the occasion.

It isn't just about the cost upfront, they way I'd like to see " cost effectiveness" is the cost per wear . Well, if advertising rates are based on cost per contact and cost per effective convertion then why not evaluate boots the same way. Definitely does a better job than randomly comparing costs .

Yeah in order to be a "killer" you gotta offer a better product at the same or similar enough price point. You aren't really killing anything if your price point makes your goods non-comparable. It's like comparing a Lexus to a Kia, sure it holds the same amount of people but realistically no one is cross shopping a Kia and a Lexus due to price difference alone.

@Pike Fish Redbacks are really no better than Blundstones. The reason people more often than not claim they are is that they are still made in Australia, but mark my words, if they ever start shifting the same numbers Blundstone do, they'll outsource too. Simple business economics.

I agree with what you said about the wedge soled version. Most people go with a Chelsea because it's light, flexible and fast to get on and off. For a big heavy lugged boot you probably would want the laces to give you that extra support and security. So a Nick's Chelsea with the lighter wedge sole, is a nice upgrade from a soft short lived Chelsea.

I have a pair of Blundstone boots that I wear about 6 months out of the year. I walk at a park 3 to 4 miles every day. Plus whatever other activities I do throughout the day. I have had them for 5 years and they are still in decent shape. They are very comfortable as a short distance hiking boot. I like them so much I purchased a second pair that I haven't started wearing yet.

Redbacks last significantly longer than 6 months to a year. After over 4 years of daily use, from work to hunting, mine are still extremely comfortable, the tread is still good and the leather looks great considering what they’ve been through and never being conditioned. Redbacks are amazing boots.

Redbacks and blue tongues do last a long time... DEPENDING on what work you do. If you're just walking all day... Or mostly driving.. or maybe office work... They stay good for years. But, if you're a mechanic like me, always kneeling and squatting and dragging your toe on the floor to get up. Plus, the chemicals and materials dropping on them... Yeah, 6 months usage is lucky. I think I got about 9 months out of my longest used pair. I switched over to SAS safety shoes. They have a MACK branded show that lasts a really long time. But, the break in time is hell for me.

@@derektrieglaff9103 I do pretty heavy industrial maintenance around a lot of hydraulics, hot plastics and other chemicals, and red backs always last me significantly longer than 6 months. I only change them out at the end of the year because my company gives me a boot allowance so I get another pair.
@derektrieglaff9103
@derektrieglaff9103 Жыл бұрын
@@taegag6179 as a mechanic working with a lot of materials that dries out leather, and also being a large man... My redbacks always cracked where the upper meets the sole at the hinge point of the boot. Working with a lot of brakleen and self drying sprays it tends to cause the leather to be brittle and crack badly. I've even protected them and mink oiled them and they still crack. Plus kneeling and dragging your toe on concrete when racking up vehicles causes rapid abrasion damage. The leather is just not as robust around the toebox.

I know its not the main point of the video, but I'm a cobbler and we resole 5+ pairs of blundstones every day at the shop. It is not much cheaper than buying a new pair, but a lot of people want to keep the pair they already have! And a lot of folks get 5-10 years out of a pair before they need to be resoled/replaced, I would not describe them as a one season boot at all.

I think the real Blundstone killers are the Jim Green Chelseas (model is the Outback). I've had a pair for a little over a year now (got them last christmas), worn them probably 3/4 of the days I'm working (and quite often on the weekends as well), and they have held up phenomenally. They have a leather insole like the Nicks, but cost a third the price, even cheaper than the Blundstones. In addition they can be much more easily resoled than a foam Chelsea. if you haven't considered these and are in the market for a Chelsea, you are doing yourself a grave disfavor.

Well your wrong about Blundstones lasting 6-9 months, I have had multiple pairs and I abuse them heavily and 5 years is the shortest amount of time to wear them out! I purchased a pair of Redbacks after watching your Redback video and while they are really nice and well made my Blundstones are way more comfortable. I cant imagine replacing either with a boot that weighs 3 times more and would be much less comfortable. Those Nick's are really nice, but completely miss the point, which is lightness and comfort. Also I can use my custom orthotics in my Blundstones and my Redbacks, but the Nick's is a non removable insole. So, to sum it up, I can't see any reason to spend twice the price on these Nick's, regardless of the build quality. Thanks for the awesome content! Cheers!

Appreciate the teardown. I have Blundstone 550's, comfort over longevity is the tradeoff with foam soles. I rotate my shoes, wearing two pairs of identical shoes for up to 2 years. That's the max life for any shoe or boot in my opinion. The $200 boot category usually fetches the best value. Cant ignore the beauty and craftmanship of the handmade super high quality steel toes. They'll be around for ever. You could hand them down to your kids.

The heart kinda hurts seeing these boots being cut, especially after waiting 8 months to receive my pair; however, you cutting the Build Pro's is what lead me to buy my first pair of Nicks. You sir provide a service to us shoe enthusiasts! Completely unrelated but since someone might read this: I own 4 pairs of Nicks and 2 of Whites. The W&C Double stuffed leather has by far been the easiest to break in and the Latigo leather used by White's has been the hardest.

My work Chelsea of choice are Jim Green Stockmans. They’re constructed traditionally like the Nicks but at a more comparable price to the foam boots due to the simplicity and use of leather board in the mid sole. So in a way, they’re a good middle ground. I personally use them for homesteading and working my families mini recreational farm and they’ve been perfect.

I just recently got into a pair of redbacks and I have absolutely zero regrets. I held off on buying a pair for so long because I wanted EXACTLY THIS, in fact, preferably from Nick's. Nothing existed. Just my luck once I finally committed to buy my redbacks, Nick's introduces their Chelsea finally. I don't think I'll buy them just yet, but I'm definitely a Chelsea convert. The design is a combination of good looks and easy to wear. I assume NFPA options will be available, I could see a lot of the more bougie pro firefighters getting these just as station boots. Chelsea's are already pretty common because of how easy they are to take on and off.

I'm hoping you can review Beckett Simonon's new Chelsea boot called the Silva Boot. The waterproof and lightweight "sneaker-like" build is very interesting. I ordered a pair and am curious how durable they are. They say it took two years to create. Regardless, it's a beautiful boot with a touch of ruggedness
@xochj
@xochj Жыл бұрын
Very cool. I'm a little worried about Nick's QC. I ordered a pair, got them, and it seems like they were squashed sometime during the build, or maybe not lasted correctly. The leather was pulled way out of shape and collapsed all around the insteps. The upper was cut way too small. 4.5 inches between locked-tight laces, easily wider than a full hand. I couldn't get the boot off for 6 hours and had to literally cut the gusset down to the vamp to pull the boot off. JK made a nearly identical boot to the Nick's, and it is as perfect a build as I've ever seen.

Can’t kill blundstone at that price point. Someone needs to go over there and wake Nick up. Edit: To clarify, not saying that this boot should not exist. It’s a nice looking boot and it looks really durable. But in order to qualify as a Blundstone Killer I think it needs to be in the same price range, like Rossi, Jim Greens, Blundstone, Redbacks. Those boots, it could be argued, all kill each other in some way depending on your needs and the fact that they cost around the same.

Blundstone and Redbacks are very popular and were targeted especially to Australian tradesman. The very hot, dry climate in Australia is the reason why qualities like breathability, lightness, comfort is preferred and adds to why these shoes are staples in Australia. Nick's boot is definitely an extremely well made shoe and definitely worth the price and would probably be best suited for cooler, wetter environments.

For Chelsea boots, especially ones that are supposed to last a long time like these, I'd love to know if the goring can be replaced and how difficult it is. If you have these long enough to replace the outsole, you're almost certainly going to see the elastic start to degrade with a lot of "bacon curling" on that goring.
@TillmansFX

Can absolutely be replaced! Its not particularly hard for a cobbler, pretty much just heat it up a bit, pick the stitches, glue in a new elastic and sew it through the same holes. You might even be able to do it yourself if youre patient and looking for a project

Hey Weston, I'd love for you to show some of the technical features of other specialty boots out there, such as those for motorcycles. TCX Heros for example are stitch down construction, have a shank, fully gusseted, feature ankle protection and retail for $260. It would be great to see where moto manufacturers are they saving their money if the boots are designed to protect you in an accident? Thanks for the videos!

I'll second you on this mate! I honestly didn't think (Australia) exported that model because it's made in such tiny batches..... they're amazingly rugged compared to the "classic" RM boots (craftsman and master craftsman) and the sole on them is built like a tank..... though it's definitely not a dress boot by any means

@@richardcostello360 I'm in rural real estate in Tassie, and out of all my RMs, the commandos get worn the most. If Blunnies were still made here then that is who I'd support with my hardearned, on the family farm mostly RedBacks are used, but I just can't go past RMWilliams myself..

Sounds like an expensive way of getting a boot that's slightly stronger than the Redbacks, but that will be less comfortable in a workshop. Maybe the Jim Green's Stockman makes a lot more sense.

What are some good boots with wood in them? I’ve had a pair of Hood Holliston boots and a pair of Clark’s Chelsea’s that have had wood in them and both pairs lasted ages and I love how sturdy it makes them feel.

Really impressed to see these, though I hate to say I'm not sure how viable they'd be on concrete in a factory or maintenance shop, etcetera. The wedge sole definitely looks more compelling for that use. But even then, I'm tempted to stick with my Bluetongue Station boots for comfort, plus electrical hazard protection and a composite toe. They also have a puncture-resistant midsole that I'm curious to see how it would fare compared to these. How much protection does that actually add? Is it on-par with the Nicks here, with all that leather? However, I really like that protected gore, and would love if the Bluetongues/Red Backs integrated that. Other than that, yeah, the fact that they can't be resoled, and inevitably, either the midsole or the outsole will fail is a major con, but... Is a full leather boot at all suited to concrete floors all day? Is that a circumstance that really benefits from the synthetics, even if it means they can't feasibly be resoled?

I have had many work boots in my life and I never had a Chelsea boot that actually fit snug and I as comfortable enough to wear regularly. I got some Blundstone all terrain thermals and they’re actually pretty nice. But they’re not work boots. I can’t imagine having a super heavy slip on boot as my daily work boot.

For the same price Baxter boot gringos would be closer to a blundstone killer. Baxter is an even a better option than red backs unless you want a work boot imo. Baxter gringo is Goodyear welted with 2 piece leather uppers for $200 AUD. Perhaps not readily available in the US though.

@@bobjohnson6321 Wesco has a 1 year lead time. I'm pretty sure they don't want to get any more of their word of mouth out there about how great their boots are, because of how behind they are now. And that's not a knock on them, it just means everyone wants a pair of Wescos right now, including me.

Awesome looking chelsea boots. As far as slip-on work boots, I've only ever used wellington boots because I don't trust the goring on chelseas. Depending on how deep the puddles are at work, the goring might let a bunch of water in, and that's why I prefer wellingtons. But wellington boots are insanely uncomfortable around the calves during the break-in period (especially during the summer). Weston, what do you think about Red Wing Roughnecks? They are moc toes with a lugged soles! Thanks for the content! It's great to see where our money really is going with the materials and construction. I wish manufacturers would list more details in their specs. Good thing we got you chopping these suckers in half.

Blundstone boots are only that pricy because of "celebrity status" Mongrel beats them hands down as does Oliver, Redback, Baxter's and FireAnt. Blundstone boots (the styles America wants) are usually the fashion/daily chores boots rather than the "working" lines Plus Blundstone uses TPU soles which don't last long before they crack and turn to dust ...... something that you didn't want in a workboot I personally wear Redback boots for work and Baxter "police dress boot" for daily and pub wear

@@richardcostello360 If strictly on outsoles, I like the mongrel the best also. very, very grippy even on very slippery, oily smooth tile floors. n it will last forever if only using it indoors. I have the derby version that looks barely worn after 1.5 years. very high quality.

Cool boot. Definitely not for me though. They look like a nightmare to break in, way too heavy and just too expensive. I’m going on 2 years of my Blundstone 990 work boots daily worn working industrial maintenance and they are still in great shape just needed to replace the insole occasionally. I can’t imagine needing anything beefier than what the Blundstone offers.

I think the true blundstone killer are Jim Green outbacks/stockmans. It’s more of a direct comparison in every way, even though they’re still both constructed differently, they’re much more comparable. In such a comparison, the JGs blow the blundstones out of the water. More sustainable, more durable obviously, more comfortable for *most* people, etc.

Well considering blundestone have been made in Asia for 30 years and have a shitty TPU I'll agree with you.
